Everyone, I just performed this task last weekend. The details provided in this video covered 100% of every step needed to successfully replace your BMW X3 Drive Shaft. These guys know this vehicle very well and point out all of the potentials issues you might run into while performing this job. I'm pleased with the outcome and highly recommend the DIY'er to watch this video in its entirety. The only recommendation I would like to share - consider using four (4) ramps to get the X3 high enough off the ground to work underneath. I recommend using the Rhino Ramps for $49/pair from Amazon Prime.
Just finished this job yesterday. It took me about 5-6 hours as a first-timer as I had to mess with some PB Blaster to remove some seized up bolts and needing to find the Torx E12 bit. I'm not sure if it's related to this, but after removing the driveshaft with my car in Park, my car rolled as if in neutral - just be sure to have it securely on the ramps/jack stands. The hardest part for me was knocking the rear part of the driveshaft out . What worked for me was spraying PB Blaster on the connection (where the Torx E12 bolts are) and then banging the other end (where the center support is) towards the front of the car with a rubber hammer/sledgehammer to knock it forward. I'm glad I didn't have to remove the exhaust as those bolts looked locked up beyond repair. Plenty of reconditioned driveshafts on EBay, and I got mine for about $390.
I just changed the driveshaft in 2004 X3 and it went exactly as it was shown in the video. Thanks World Mechanics for a great video. I removed the old driveshaft from the rear end by hitting it with a mini sledge and it popped right off.
Use a narrow E 12 socket for the rear bolts , to get it to sit straight on the head of the bolt ,,,,,they are tight .Very well described , TOP MARKS !.
Hi , please i want to know if it's possible to change only the universals joint for my bmw x3 2.5L 2006 automatic transnission.if yes i need reference for the universals joints rear and front. I 'm from quebec and here when i asked for U- joints they sell the whole drive shaft
Please do a video on how to replace the front drive shaft. Searching RUclips and not finding any for a 2004 BMW X3. The one's available don't show how to navigate the silver thing that seems attached to the rear part of the shaft and seemingly wants to come off with it. Some comment in another video says you get fluid to pour out all over you and that you must get new bolts. Finally, may I drive without the front shaft?
I just replaced my front driveshaft on 2006 X3 (Feb 2022). You cannot drive without front driveshaft , because .... the end going to the transfer case, has a u-joint attached to a slip yoke, through a seal. If you remove the u-joint/slip yoke, you're gonna spill most of the fluid in the TC. I accidentally pulled mine out (the u-joint flange was stuck to the yoke). Be careful when separating it. ANOTHER thing most don't mention (you did above), is to use NEW bolts, don't reuse the old "stretch bolts". I learned the hard way. They need to first be torqued to 30 ft#, THEN .... 45 degree angle torqued. What a bitch! The 30# is easy... cranking on the extra 45 degree turn is a Herculean effort, especially lying down without a hoist. Anyway, just thought I'd share my experience. OH and lastly, it says right on the stiffening plate "DO NOT DRIVE WITHOUT .... without the stiffening plate". (that is, if it you take it off to give better clearance to remove the front bolts). That too, needs NEW bolts. I didn't realize these bolts are fricken expensive. $9.60 each for front, $6.63 each for rear ones. So factor in like $70 for the 8 bolts.
@D. L. yes not funny while driving..thankfully it happens to me, on the way while parking..5 min earlier..driving 70km/h ..we would be possible death, I was told from the garage, thankfully we has guardian angels

Was this an automatic? Or manual? Thanks
Automatic- it’s a 3.0L. The rear driveshaft is the same for the 3.0L and the 2.5L manual version, but different for the 2.5L automatic version.
excellent vid. Thank you very much.
Great video .. no nonsense
Man, how do you pull the shaft off to the side like that.. I cannot do that for the life of me.
Hi guys welcome back to my laboratory. Where safety is our number one priority. 😂
Why you had to replace the rear drive shaft if you already replace the center support in the other video ??????
Ujoints.
I’ve a same problem with u-joints can i replace them by press them out and put new one
I wish you would have added to the video how to get that stuck drive shaft off
I just hit it with a mini sledgehammer and it popped right off.
did you ever come across a drive Shaft breaking in the middle and dropping down?
I had my front drive shaft break on my x3 and it punctured my fuel line and transmission pan. Not fun. Now it's time to replace my rear driveshaft.
@D. L. yes not funny while driving..thankfully it happens to me, on the way while parking..5 min earlier..driving 70km/h ..we would be possible death, I was told from the garage, thankfully we has guardian angels
That's the prop shaft, not a drive shaft.
That u joint wasn't that bad
That's not a drive shaft, it's a prop shaft 🤦♂️
