People dont consider the evolution of the courts when talking abt the goat debate i feel like. If federer had this speed of court his whole career who knows? Hed be even more dominant. And honestly the play is so much more beautiful on these courts. It incentives great stroke play rather than just needing to keep the ball in play
Also to a extent the evolution of stroke techniques has had a impact, back in the wooden racquet days nobody could hit serves over 135mph, most indue to the technology but I remember I tried using a wooden racquet (a authentic one) and hit a serve and reached 138 a dozen times, bare in mind I modeled my serve after Roddick.
I have to say I'm very impressed by Suzuki. Also, I miss the days of all court tennis when the ball actually stayed low. Current topspin grind tennis is sheer boredom.
I totally agree, I hate the topspin grind game so much. It feels so repetitive and mechanical. Not much finesse anymore, and they all mostly play the same style and it's not a fun style to watch.
Man just how good and how precise was Fed's ball striking back in the day!! He could place that ball exactly where he wanted from wherever he was on the court, at will. He simply doesn't have this level of control now. Suzuki played exceptionally well too, almost a more serve and volley version of Federer himself.
That hard driving slice forehand from Suzuki is simply amazing. You don’t see that in today’s tennis. This would be a great shot for club level players to learn and apply in their matches.
I almost only slice on my forehand when playing matches in my club. The reason is that my topspin forehand is crap. The forehand slice drives people crazy and I win a lot of points with that.
Suzuki pulling off some stunners here. I think anyone would have had trouble against him on these courts with him in this form. Close loss for him, alas late-2006 Roger pulled off backhand lasers with metronomic regularity
Never seen this particular match between these two. Only the match at the AusOpen when FedEx was hitting winners around the net post. 06 was a ridiculously good year for Federer. I think he was only beaten 2 or 3 times that year.
Really high quality From both players Roger is extremely sharp, as someone commented his control is very precise I think he lost some of this once he put power on top of control with bigger racket head. Suzuki definitely gave him a run for his money. Hadn’t heard of him before but definitely very crafty and great net skills.
Suzuki was a great player! weak volleys was the only real opening for Federer that i saw. Federer often did this, though - start out behind and win later. either he is great at in-match adjustments ie figuring out better strategy on the fly or he simply lifted his level when it was needed. maybe some of both, of course.
At 0:15 it's almost like I'm watching Roger playing against his own shadow there! They both share so many similarities regarding their tactics, although Federer is more effective and has a wider range of shots.
Dam Suzuki's game was clean

Old fast courts, how I miss them.
Exactly my thoughts

Courts may have gotten slower but racquets have gotten more powerful to compensate.

Just passing through on my journey to watch every Federer match.
Suzuki was awesome, first time seeing this match, thanks. I think playing in his home country amped him up vs Fed

Suzuki is my favourite Fed journeyman opponent. I could watch this and AO 2005 all day.

Suzuki has all the shots - very classy tennis. Sta Tennis are very lucky.

Suzuki’s volley is top class, very few can be better. But Federer’s accuracy is crazy sharp even under pressure. What a match!
Takao pro crossed with Roger evenly⚔
Suzuki is currently on Star Tennis Academy channel
So clean, love it!
It's great watching the contrasting styles!

What a Suzuki, Federer does not need a compliment :D
Where do you get these old treasures, mate?
Woow! Thank You for uploading this match!! Very, very rare footage...
I have been searching for the highlights of this match for centuries i think, thank you so much
Roger federer golden legend in universal

He was beaten then 5 times, 4 times by Nadal, and one by Murray :)

This is real tennis

Those flick backhand passing shots from
Federer are just out of this world but also credit to Suzuki’s serve and volley game
Good game, close one!

Хорошая игра была.Федерер, конечно,мастер создавать интриги! Браво!
6:11 I'm stealing that celebration pose.
cringe
Not an easy match, Fed knew it!
This is ideal speed
Best player in history prime Fed
Hi, do you have Federer bt Thomas Johansson 2004 Wimbledon R3? would love to watch it. Thanks and keep up your good work.
Did you know suzuki was under the top 1000 in that tournament?
Yes, I saw it on Federer fb page tbh lol
1078, if I remember? And it was in QF?
Suzuki gave Roger no free points
matchpoint seemed like a point for suzuki but federer got rewarded an unforced error from a crucial fh volley
Suzuki can proudly say that he played Federer with his eyes closed :))
How do you beat someone who can move and hit the ball anywhere he wants to?
First
STA!
Oh great. Where this guy suzuki gone then???
Retired
Also, courts got slower and Suzuki with all others from Fed's generation got lost.
Federer ruined him
Wonder how much Federer got paid to go Tokyo in his prime when he was already playing 90+ matches a year lol.
A bit of arrogance and low effort from Fed
Yikes! Total boredom!
Troll 🤡
