@3:34 Slight confusion. The Floyd Rose specs call for 25 1/8" from the nut to the post hole centers. If the line on the template is to be used, it would put the posts way too far forward, I believe. I checked the StewMac instructions, and the 25" is to the center of the two mounting screw holes on the template, I believe.
We haven't had any issues with the original Floyds and the StewMac templates but it is a good idea to check this stuff. Thanks for the heads up my friend.
3:32 that horizontal line is the center of the cavity, not the 25" to nut. The 25" to nut are the actual screw holes. Just clarifying, I have the same template from Stew mac... don't throw me a coors can...
There you go
Is the 25” mark supposed to be in the exact middle of the screw hole? So that when I drill the hole, I put the tip of my drill right on that point.
You are supremely talented! I learned a ton from this video and am not as afraid as I was for my upcoming first Floyd Rose installation. Thank you!
Thanks for watching Eric, the Stewmac templates make it easy, you can do it man!
Your channel is one of the most enjoyable to watch. Bro, I don't even own a guitar. 😭😂
Forget everything I know about installing a Floyd rose? Joke's on you, I don't know how to install one... Until now
The more of these videos you watch the more you will realize that the joke is always on me Chad hahaha
Thank you! Your video helped me put a Floyd Rose on a Dean ML.
Thanks for watching my friend, glad to hear it worked out
Thank you very much for your answer.
You are welcome
Oh no!! This video is too advanced for me, and thanks to the title, I FORGOT EVERYTHING I KNEW ABOUT INSTALLING A FLOYD ROSE!!!
WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NOW!!???
I get to wonder how many guitars are built in the USA thanks to steward mc donalds :-) lol!
Hi dblanco I wonder about that too. I have always had very good luck with the tools and supplies from them.
You said the scribed line thru the trem block hole...was at 25” to the nut. that’s incorrect. It’s 25” from the center of the stud mounting holes to the nut. Their instructions tell you to scribe another line thru the mounting stud holes.
Ugh, fine you are smarter than me. I'm going to go home and rethink my entire life
Sorry man...No disrespect was intended. I watch lots of your vids. You did another floyd vid and it was correct on that one, it was just a verbal mistake on this one. You obviously know what you’re doing.
Ahh the beloved ❤️ pin router
Lord knows I love it!
Matt, another great video. Thanks again for taking the time to talk yesterday about the fret slot blade. Hope i didn't slow you down on the video
Thanks Paul, make sure and keep me posted on the SawStop fret slotting progress. I always enjoy talking to other guitar builders and I don't imagine a time when I will be too busy to hang out for a while.
Texas Toast Guitars Matt, it took a bit of searching but i found a company that will make the blade for me in 8" diameter, which will work( i hope). They make the blades for LMII. the 1 they are making me is only $108 plus shipping. Cheaper than the SM blade!
Hey, right on that sounds like a killer deal. Will it have the same profile as the LMII blade with the support flanges?
from what he says it will be very similar to the SM blade
Sounds like the hot set up. I might have to buy a spare from your conection
ah i see the pin router basicly buplivates what onthe table side of vthe router to the top of the body cool.
It pretty much rules
I want a pin router.
Would love to see you do that on a carved top, pretty tricky...
I think we already did a video on that. You are right it is tricky
can you point me to it?
still waiting for the link
Would you be willing to make a Steinberger GM2 body with a Floyd Rout?
I'm sorry but we do not offer that service
@@TexasToastGuitars Okay, no problem.
Hey Matt ! Great videos as always , But I have to ask ! The instructions for the templates call out that the 25 inch mark should be scribed on your template and its not the horizontal line you called out ? Can you confirm this ? If your correct then StewMAcs instructions are way off , Thanks
The Stew Mac Strat template I have referred to a scrubbed line the one for the Floyd... That I have has what i used in this video.
You should absolutely use the directions that came with your template set.
It's easy and fun! Hahaha
Texas Toast Guitars thanks for the reply , oh I know it’s straight forward for sure , I have the same templates as you used . I got with Stewmac to confirm there written instructions
Keep the videos coming , I really dig what you do
Wow! That takes more work than I realized!
You know how it is, the explanation takes more time than the process, especially when I'm attempting to describe what is going on hahaha
Texas Toast Guitars lol...ya and I bet it's not as easy as you make it look! 👍😎🎸🎶
You know I got my technique down on the first one that was not being documented on video.
Texas Toast Guitars wow! If you would have only had the camera running!☺
Maybe one day we will have a show on the Discovery Channel and you can see all of that unedited stuff... Of course, I think it's all scripted but if you suspend disbelief
Yo.. I’m in Texas myself where you located? Was hopping you could give me some advice about the mounting placement for my Floyd rose 7 string.. not sure where to mount it in relation to the scale length.. my templates don’t have lines.
What is the minimum amount of material between the studs and pickup cavity to be safe?
ok ive done few floyd installs i evan put one on a dime 332 but ive always nut to center of the pivit post at 25 now ive heard some people are doing 25 1/8 . iam doing a kramer special with a gohto ge1996t floyd marsmointain states hes dome them at 25 1/8 mark. so iknow theres 1/16 + or - on the posts but why the 25 1/8 mark?
Jokes on you , I can't even change a string
You got me good
ohhhhh baby i lo0ve them 80s reversed banana's wow. i need to learn how to make my own ..
Yeah you do, come out to one of our workshops sometime
@@TexasToastGuitars Iam in Arizona
I would in a 💜 glbeatcman I have a friend a boituiqe Luther owns Bad Boy guitars him and his wifeoved from here to woodland Texas he wants me to come out he was gonna put me under his wing and teach me I got to do a complete fret job including retadiuing my fret board on. A Washburn. Dime black jack 1995 first run it was def dif never done one before. But no trabspo but if I could man I would trust me .
Thank u for this great video man, but my problem is when i attach the springs to the spring lock (without strings) my bridge keeps popping off, sorry for my bad English but can you help me with this?
Tom segura with a ponytail
That's a good one
what would it cost to have a left handed of that done with that next headstock looks like a kramer
We can not use the Kramer headstock due to trademarks
@@TexasToastGuitars oh the headstock on that looks like a kramer
If i like to replace my 22 frets neck with 24, which should i adjust? The pickup position or the floydrose bridge?
Well the bridge will be in the same place since the nut isn't moving... I don't want to sound mean but are you up to speed on how scale length works?
@@TexasToastGuitars I was just worrying about the intonation and also the sound of the bridge pickup. . If the pickup move a little towards neck, i'm worried it might sound differently. If the bridge move towards the bridge pickup the wood in between which supports the studs where the bridge seats in might be prone to breakage. Thanks
A question: In researching the measurement for the centre of the bridge stud holes, I found 25 1/8" as well, which is what I used. I realize there is quite a bit of adjustment available, but am I going to be in trouble?
Our friend Mike Learn says 25 1/8 too
@@TexasToastGuitars
TY! I like the way Mike thinks. He must be a learned fellow!
Would this also work on a tele?
I don't see why not, Mick Mars had one
Link for floyd rose template
That one came from Stewmac
Cool video, wish I had that pin router. I wanted to put a floyd rose on my Gibson SG, but it might be too thin (1 3/8" thick)? Do you think this is possible if I get a short block for the floyd (32mm I believe is the shortest block available)?
The big issue with a Floyd and any guitar with a TOM bridge is the neck angle. I think Floyd makes a reto-fit bridge for Gibson guitars but I don't remember what it is called.
@@TexasToastGuitars thanks for the reply. Is it an issue in terms of having the floyd sit flat on the body? because I actually prefer it to be sitting above the body. PS I currently have a "Floyd FRX" on my SG and doesn't do it for me
Yeah, that is the one, sorry to hear it isn't cutting the mustard. I'm not going to say that using a standard Floyd on a guitar that is set up for a TOM is impossible. It is going to be challenging. Imagine a line from the top of the frets over the bridge location. On a Gibson the distance from that line to the top of the body is as much as 3/4 of an inch on some guitars. Now imagine it on a Fender and the distance is 1/2 or less... again, on some guitars. You know that it's different from model to model and brand to brand. Anyway, that extra 1/4 inch or more is going to have to be made up somehow. Another possible option, though really invasive, and expensive would be to re-set the neck at a new angle.
Good luck man, let me know what you come up with
@@TexasToastGuitars You were right on the money about that 3/4" measurement on my Gibson. I also own a Washburn Dime USA and it has a Schaller Floyd bridge. Surface of guitar to top of bridge saddle is 3/4" also. Main difference is it doesnt have the steep neck angle the Gibson does, just a fatter fingerboard. Again if anything I prefer the bridge to be floating high above the body (makes for easier whammy squealing). Is it still an issue because the Floyd pivot screws aren't long enough or am I misunderstanding the issue? Thanks again appreciate your 2 cents
@@TexasToastGuitars decided to go with my Floyd FRX. what's odd is I put it on another one of my SG's with no problem, yet both of them are from the exact same year/model/production. Not sure why I couldn't get the action at an acceptable height on the first SG. TY for your input though I enjoy your vids and all things guitar and guitar repair related
Great Video!!! Do you make custom guitars? If so, what's your price range and do you have a website or photo gallery of your work you can share? Thank you

@@TexasToastGuitars jk hi
Hey Matt, can a FR be installed without having to rout the recess cavity..?
Some can
Yes, top mount so if you break a string, the rest will still be in tune. You just can't do any dime squeals really.
What is the minimum amount of material between the studs and pickup cavity to be safe?
I think it is going to depend on the lumber. Even then, anything can fail
