Dave Edmonds classic live version of Saber Dance is absolutely amazing! And Randy California wow. When a legend like Jimmy Hendrix says your an awesome guitar hero that says all you need to know! Check out the excellent work of the band Spirit.
GREAT List! With the likes of Tipton, Bachman, Timmons. One guy that I'd add @ sometime: Mike Slamer- who played with CityBoy, one of my favorite short-lived groups-Streets(featuring Steve Walsh on vocals). Mike also had his own group for a while + those early Warrant albums- contributed @ least 50% of the licks (via studio sessions) too technical.... that their dual guitarists couldn't deliver. Really looking forward to the list of Rock goddesses'😍🪨🎸.
Another tremendous list and so happy to see Martin Barre at 1. He is so much more than just a guitar player...he was, I believe, the longest serving foil to the mad genius that is Ian Anderson, and given the rate he has gone through players in Tull, Martin must be something very special indeed. I pointed a number of my students (used to be a high school Religion teacher) to his performance on the Bursting Out album...they were explaining "djent" to me and I felt duty bound to introduce them to the guy that had that down back in the '70's. Thanks again, Joe.
I love this comment!! Thank you for sharing it. When I was just starting out playing guitar in 1988 I asked my uncle about Jethro Tull and he didn’t care for them which meant he didn’t have any albums to loan me. It wasn’t until I was in my 20’s that I heard JT and was wondering what he didn’t like about them. I was immediately hooked.
When I was a starting to play the guitar all I had was a cheap acoustic, and I was listening to The Beatles, Sabbath and Skynyrd and so wanted an electric guitar. Anyway a friend of mine loaned me "Bursting Out"...I must have been 14/15...and Ian Anderson opened my eyes to the coolness of the acoustic guitar. My first decent acoustic was an Ibanez that I was told would get me close to an Ian Anderson sound. Fast forward to 2022 and My Uncle gifted me his Martin D45 Centennial Edition, now I can Ian Anderson my ass off...Love it.@@joehansonguitar
As a budding guitarist in the 70s, I cut my teeth on 2 of the guys on this list - Randy Bachman & Bill Nelson. Andy Timmons gave a clinic at the music store I work at. That's 3 on this list I have a special connection to that I think most people don't know about. Good on you for this list.
Nathan, that’s so awesome. Thank you for your comment. I worked at a music store during high school in the early 90’s and we had regular clinics with some heavy performers coming in while on tour. Man, I miss those days!!
Great list... again! Picking the two different eras of Priest was a great example of how Glenn has evolved. I prefer the Beyond the Realm solo to the Painkiller solo, but I'm an old fart. As for Canadian artists, dare I mention Aldo Nova?
Thanks for reminding us about Andy Timmons. Hard to say who may have influenced who but to my ears and memory Andy's style and sound were reminiscent in some ways of Joe Satriani, EVH and Jeff Beck.

I have heard that but it’s been probably since the 90’s when I was introduced to it during college so I definitely need to check it out again. BTW, thank you for your service!
Gifted guitar Ladies? I recommend, originally from Toronto, Donna Grantis; simply awesome! I also would like to put a word in for Colin James, serious blues chops.
One of your players in this episode actually reminded me of another great player. Back in the early 80's there was club in my hometown "Rutland VT" that got some great acts we used to go see. I was introduced to Chris Impellitteri there and he was fantastic but another of his brethren used to also come to play there Jimi Bell! Not sure if your familiar with him or ever heard of Jimi but he's another great player and a friend of Chris's. Jimi actually auditioned for Ozzy and lost out to Zakk but became Geezers guitarist for his solo album. He also went on to be the lead guitarist in AUTOGRAPH and HOUSE OF LOURDES but Jimi is another great "left-handed guitar player!
@@joehansonguitar please do he's worth checking out. Just a side note here, he also wrote the song "Master of Insanity" which became a Black Sabbath song on the Dehumanizer" album. Geezer's wife Gloria informed Jimi Sabbath was getting back together with Ronnie to do another album and they wanted to use his song but had to say Geezer wrote it because Tony would never allow another guitar player's music on a Sabbath album, he was told he'd be paid for it and unfortunately never was but if you're familiar with the album and the song Jimi Bell wrote it 👍 thanks for listening
How about Barry Baily & J.R Cobb from Atlanta Rhythm Section, both great players that never got the they recognition deserved. Always got tickets for backstage and their recording of a few songs off the Champagne Jam album (at that time), my Mom's first cousin married into Ronnie Hammond's family; a very long story. Their bass player had the number 2 live bass solo (Another Man's Women Live LP) of all time by Bass Player magazine back in the late 70's. He was a great guitar player as well.....
I first heard Bill Nelson in the 80's on pioneering alt station WLIR - NY. Initially it was his more New Wave synth stuff like " Flaming Desire" and "My Acceleration" , then I discovered his Be Bop Deluxe era and saw what guitar chops he had. Definitely a diverse and talented guy!
great call on barre, we used to know is an amazing lead, and his work on the benefit album is fantastic. Hidden gems all throughout their career, broadsword and the beast album, heavy horses, minstrel in the gallery, crest of a knave
My first pick for underrated/appreciated guitarists… Jim West. He’s Weird Al’s guitarist. That guy can not only play any style out there but he can PARODY every player out there. Not just copy them but he has enough respect and ability to caricature anybody. Think about a guy who is such an ace at any style of guitar that we have no idea who is playing that stuff.
That’s like the session guys who had to play guitar on Tom and Jerry cartoons and the like. Incredibly difficult to play the right stuff on a first take since everything was tape back then. Thanks for the suggestion!! 🎸🔥✌🏻
I think Adam Granduciel from The War On Drugs is underrated. Great call on Martin Barre though. I'm sure you have heard Jethro Tull's live album, A Little Light Music, but you should check it out if you haven't already. Barre's playing on that album is downright inspiring. Me and friend saw Jethro Tull live at the Riviera Ballroom in Chicago in 1992 when we were in highschool and it was probably the best rock concert I ever witnessed, besides the Eagles at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin in '94 just after they'd gotten back together from having been broken up the previous 13 or 14 years. Also, great call on Doyle Dykes. I watch Doyle's Sunday String Along on RUclips every Sunday morning. Muriel Anderson might be the greatest female guitar player of all time, maybe even just guitar player period, but she doesn't get anywhere near the recognition she deserves and is probably not even known by many people except guitar nerds like myself.
I’m not familiar with Adam but I’m going to check him out. There’s been a few new names that viewers have mentioned that I’m really digging! I’m also planning a separate series just on the lady players!
I’m not a huge country music fan but do appreciate good guitar. I’m not sure if he’s been mentioned but Keith Urban is really good. Check out “Clutterbilly” when was with The Ranch.
Hey there Joe, great list! I would be interested to know what your thoughts are on Canadian guitarist/singer Kim Mitchell (?). Greetings from South Africa!
Great that somebody cared to mention Rick Emmet and Ian Crichton. So underrated! But here are a few I missed, though most are not very well known. Jan Akkerman (Focus), Steve Hackett (Genesis) and not to forget Daryl Stuermer, Andy Powell (Wishbone Ash), Ted Turner (Wishbone Ash; listen to Argus), Mike Oldfield, John Lees (Barclay James Harvest), Les Holroyd (Barclay James Harvest), James Y Young (Styx), Tommy Shaw (Styx). Maybe not quite shredders, but...
Hard to believe it took 6 installments to get to Robin Thrower and Bill Nelson! Loved BeBop Deluxe probably cried when Nelson broke band up in 1977 so he could make goofy industrial music 😢 what a shame!
James Moginie and Martin Rotsey are the guitar tandem in Midnight Oil, both are great. James is multi instrument talented and one hell of a songwriter.
Here's a few more:Shawn Lane, Richard Thompson, Kim Mitchell, Todd Rundgren, Ronnie Montrose, Barry Bailey, Ollie Halsall, Nils Lofgren, Oz Noy, Jimmy Herring, Rick Derringer ,Trevor Rabin, Brett Garsed, Andy Latimer, Zal Yanovsky, and most importantly...SHAWN LANE!!!
Got to meet him during a jazz clinic when I worked at a music store in high school in the early 90’s and was completely blown away. Super nice guy also.
Trower is a wonderful player. But, when I hear his name, I immediately think of James Dewars voice! And a big YES on Bachman! He played for the songs, period!
Next time you should include John Norum from the band Europe. His solo work is great! And every solo on the Final Countdown album is a classic.Great melodies and feel. And listen to the solo in"Hold Your Head Up"(Europe)The best tone ever.
@@joehansonguitar Ethan Brosh is one of the best players I've ever seen. Nili played in his band as he was opening act for Yngwie. There is a video on RUclips in witch he playes with George Lynch. Breathtaking!

Why not show some vintage Martin Barre in his prime..also with better audio quality. One of my favorites since the late 60s!!!
I’d like to eventually do an entire video dedicated to him. ✌🏻
Excellent! I’m not familiar with Jimi but I’ll check him out 😎
@@joehansonguitar please do he's worth checking out.
He was my first concert Jr in highschool at the famed Winterland corner of Height snd Ash Berry 10:55 San Francisco Jethro Tull opened 1975
Randy? Thats awesome!
Martin Barr, the reason I bought my first Jethro Tull album.
Amazing musician 🎸🔥
How about Barry Baily & J.R Cobb from Atlanta Rhythm Section, both great players that never got the they recognition deserved. Always got tickets for backstage and their recording of a few songs off the Champagne Jam album (at that time), my Mom's first cousin married into Ronnie Hammond's family; a very long story. Their bass player had the number 2 live bass solo (Another Man's Women Live LP) of all time by Bass Player magazine back in the late 70's. He was a great guitar player as well.....
Yeah man! I’ve got them on my list! What a great story!
I'd like to see H.E.R. recognized. Great job with the lists!
Fantastic and thanks!!
She isn’t that great
I first heard Bill Nelson in the 80's on pioneering alt station WLIR - NY. Initially it was his more New Wave synth stuff like " Flaming Desire" and "My Acceleration" , then I discovered his Be Bop Deluxe era and saw what guitar chops he had. Definitely a diverse and talented guy!
Absolutely right on diverse. The guy is truly an underrated gem! ✌🏻
great call on barre, we used to know is an amazing lead, and his work on the benefit album is fantastic. Hidden gems all throughout their career, broadsword and the beast album, heavy horses, minstrel in the gallery, crest of a knave
Yeah man!! 🎸🔥✌🏻
My first pick for underrated/appreciated guitarists…
Jim West.
Would be better if you put the title of the song so we can look up and listen to the full version after watching this video.
Will do! ✌🏻
Have you featured Richard Thompson yet?
Not yet!
Steve Rothery of Marillion.
Excellent!
Brent Fitz
Nice, who’s he play with?
Glad to see Randy Bachman made the list, love all these list. Thanks brother!
Thanks!! I’m just trying to keep these names out there hopefully for future generations of players to see. ✌🏻
Randy was also influenced by Lenny Breau.
I’m not a huge country music fan but do appreciate good guitar. I’m not sure if he’s been mentioned but Keith Urban is really good. Check out “Clutterbilly” when was with The Ranch.
I’ll be adding him eventually. I saw him in concert a few years ago and was very impressed!
Harry K Cody, from Shotgun Messiah
Perfect!!
What about Buckethead,? A great guitar player that you don't hear much about.
He’s coming soon!
Great episode
Thanks!
Hey Joe, I posted this on The Blues Rock Experience today. Nice list. Still missing some Boomers, but we're doing ok.
Hey man!! I’m still working through my list. Who would you recommend for next week?
@@joehansonguitar Duane Allman and Dickey Betts are great choices. If you want to go back a bit Hubert Sumlin and Johnny Otis.
Of course the great Peter Green in his short 3 years with Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. He put Eric to shame..
Someone go get Doyle's guitar case - it's the one that says "Bad Motherfucker" on it.
You know that’s right 🔥🔥🔥
Hey there Joe, great list! I would be interested to know what your thoughts are on Canadian guitarist/singer Kim Mitchell (?). Greetings from South Africa!
Greetings! Thanks for the comments! Kim Mitchell is a fantastic player that I may feature in a later video. 🎸✌🏻
You gotta check out Jimmy herring! Of Aquarium Rescue Unit Fame! Just blisters it! So underatted its criminal.
Alright, Jimmy should be in next weeks episode!! ✌🏻
Matthew Sweet and Brian Eno. Great to see Trower and Tipton.
Awesome bro! Thanks for the suggestions!
Some missing from your list.
Chris Degarmo
Mark Knofler
Devin Townsend
John Petrruci
I’m working down my list little by little! ✌🏻
Also Kenny Wayne Sheppard
Ian Moore
Superb mentions👍
Thanks for your comment and for your excellent recommendations 🎸✌🏻
Please check out John Cann, from Atomic Rooster.
Excellent! 🤘🏻
Greg Howe. Great melodic player and improviser. Unique and very talented.
Definitely! He’s on my list for an upcoming episode ✌🏻🎸
Still no Buckethead!? An utter outrage!! JK … no but really! Seriously?
lol, he’s on my list for an upcoming episode!
lol!!! Thx for the reply! Good deal!!👍🏻
Excellent!!
Killer guitarists all of them. 🔥🎸
Absolutely!!
Hard to believe it took 6 installments to get to Robin Thrower and Bill Nelson! Loved BeBop Deluxe probably cried when Nelson broke band up in 1977 so he could make goofy industrial music 😢 what a shame!
Sorry man for the delay, I was literally just going down my list lol
James Moginie and Martin Rotsey are the guitar tandem in Midnight Oil, both are great. James is multi instrument talented and one hell of a songwriter.
Oh man! Great choices!!
Michael Hedges needs to be on one of these lists.
I agree, he’s in my list!
Randy Bachman is a great guitarist. Great to see him up here. Great vid
Yeah man! Excellent musician!
Here's a few more:Shawn Lane, Richard Thompson, Kim Mitchell, Todd Rundgren, Ronnie Montrose, Barry Bailey, Ollie Halsall, Nils Lofgren, Oz Noy, Jimmy Herring, Rick Derringer ,Trevor Rabin, Brett Garsed, Andy Latimer, Zal Yanovsky, and most importantly...SHAWN LANE!!!
Nice! A couple of those are in next weeks episode! 🤘🏻
Nigel Tiufnel and David St. Hubbins?
Stonehenge, Rock N Roll Creation, Big Bottom! 🤘🏻
@@joehansonguitar Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight
Larry Coryell
Got to meet him during a jazz clinic when I worked at a music store in high school in the early 90’s and was completely blown away. Super nice guy also.
Trower is a wonderful player. But, when I hear his name, I immediately think of James Dewars voice!
And a big YES on Bachman! He played for the songs, period!
😎🎸🔥
Had another thought on lady guitarists. Charo was a great classical and flamenco guitarist. Studied under Andre Segovia for a while.
Yes, great idea!
Next time you should include John Norum from the band Europe. His solo work is great! And every solo on the Final Countdown album is a classic.Great melodies and feel. And listen to the solo in"Hold Your Head Up"(Europe)The best tone ever.
Great recommendation! I will definitely put him on my list for a future episode! ✌🏻
How about Bill Kirchen from The Lost Planet Airmen, or Chris Cheney from The Living End? Also as I've mentioned before, Francis Rossi and Status Quo.
I’m adding them to my list, thanks 🙏🏻
Don't forget about Captain Sensible.
Wot
Forgive my male pattern forgetfulness, but have you done Rick Derenger or Steve Miller? If so, never mind.
lol, not yet Lee! I’m working on getting them in a video soon 😎
Tony Clarkin, Magnum (RIP) is one for this list.
Girls? Nili Brosh and
Boys... her brother Ethan, a monster!
I agree about the girls. Nili is phenomenal. I haven’t heard her brother yet!
@@joehansonguitar
Ethan Brosh is one of the best players I've ever seen. Nili played in his band as he was opening act for Yngwie.
There is a video on RUclips in witch he playes with George Lynch. Breathtaking!
Gabriela Quintero would be an excellent addition to a list of lady guitar players. Increadible flemenco style rhythm playing.
Excellent! Thanks for the suggestion! ✌🏻
Saga,, yes,yes yes.. Martin Barre hell yeah. I was lucky enough to click on this lady playing the blues years ago, Ana Popovic, i hope its spelled right but shes a beast..
Nice!!! Thank you 🙏🏻
I like Robin Trower, but can't help wondering what he would have done if Hendrix never showed up. Same goes for SRV and maybe Frank Marino.
Interesting thoughts!!
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Thank you 🙏🏻
You are welcome also what is your favorite year from the 2010s ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊
Apologies if I missed it, but no Dave Murray? Sweet, sweet legato
Great suggestion! Thanks
Sorry, but what about Jerry Stevenson, guitarist by B# sharp? I know i am driving you mad....... album Play This....? Greatings from holland! By the way, nice new collection!
🎸🔥✌🏻
Every guitar player here could easily be a top ten ..... Or top twenty . Great list .....😅
Definitely! Thanks!
Not sure. Have you had Chet Atkins yet?
Not yet but he’s coming soon!
Trower ROCKS!
Absolutely!!
