I moved from a city to a farm setting and always wanted chickens. The initial cost to build a proper coop and the time to do it was important to me so that I knew the birds would be safe. Of course when I was done building it, a local farmer kept telling me that I would give up on it because of the routine care required or that I'd have snakes or foxes or anything getting in or going wrong. I ignored the negative comments and my birds are doing great.
The experience of predators is inevitable. They were warning you and they were correct. Usually it takes years before something goes terribly wrong and ignoring his advice is just plain stupid. You should be prepared for a full flock loss as once it starts it will happen regularly, it just depends on when the predators find them and when they do they will know there is "free food" there and will be back. Just be prepared and take measures to regulate losses.
Hi Dr. Daniel. I am a 32 year old Kenyan from Nairobi. My family especially my dad was very discouraging when I pitched ideas on starting a farm. Diseases and lack of agricultural background was the reason. Around February 2020 I made this bold step and started with 200 DOC. The first time I was naive and I had a good share of mortalities as a result of diseases and attacks from predators, never the less I managed to see through some of the chicken until point of laying. Same year on September I made some radical changes and it included replacing my farm boy, improving the structure, use of technology in order to making process of brooding perfect. This time I would do things differently and I started to incubate my own eggs. Out of 8 trays of eggs I got 185 chicks. The chicks are currently 4 weeks old and I have just lost 2 chicks so far (chicks were lame after hatching them using incubators) I currently incubate more eggs since I have received overwhelming demand of DOC, MOC from farmers, I sell breeding corckrels and I also sell improved kienyeji eggs to my family for consumption. Yes! it is very ironical mentioning I am selling the eggs to the people who doubted my aspirations at the first, but it is not cheap. It cost them 4.5$ per tray.
