Common R32 Turbo Problem - Warped SPA Turbo Exhaust Manifold!

- Welcome back guys, today we are tackling a job that is so crucial to the car running right but a pain in the ass to do repeatedly. We are changing the turbo manifold and getting it skimmed as it warped with the heat.

I feel like you haven’t uploaded in ages. Good to have a upload, I definitely love build ❤❤
No I haven’t. It’s hard to work on my drive over winter 😂
@@OctaneFever I just went through your build videos and its amazing what yo were able to diy using simple tools...
one simple tip/ opinion: torque on low rpm is what bends rods, and after I looked at your dyno sheet you can see that the torque curve aggressively spikes as the turbo comes on.
I would suggest asking your tuner to pull some timing at that rpm in order to have a flatter curve that nearly holds the same torque at 4000 rpm as 7000rpm. This will also give you a more linear horsepower graph rather than a strong punch.
this is how new exotic cars like mclarens are being tuned to have high peak numbers but a flat torque curve rather a spike up than downhill. Feel free to do your own research but i though I suggest this as it is much safer and the car would still be 490whp just softer curve and more longevity.
Cheers

Благодарю и желаю успехов.
Im getting my R32 on Monday and its ALL cuz of you, love the car and love what u do bro, plz keep us updated and make us more vids, thank u
How did you get on with your r32?
Thank you for the great content and also for the manual you showed here (11:10). I'm working on two VR's going turbos and your progress/videos certainly helps me very much❤
Tubular Manifold or don’t bother.
Have you any thoughts on maybe the exhaust face of the cylinder may need a skim?
That’s basically what I’m saying in the video. No the head is flat and I couldn’t imagine the heat needed to bend that face.
Does your turbo have supporting bracket or just hanging on the manifold
If no brackets they is no manifold which is going to fix it
Some manifolds have vertical cuts in the mounting holes to help with expansion , the slots get closer with heat but there is less warping push
Yeah they do. I was tempted to do that to this one but didn’t want it to ping into more of a banana once I cut it. Lol
hey man, always enjoying your videos, I have similar manifold (you know the chinese cheap version) on my r32T, and It cracked also 3 times on exact same spot, so I assume too much weight on that side because of the turbo, I am thinking about adding some turbo support to avoid all weight on that part of the manifold
Yeah I think that will help. Keep me posted on Instagram with your progress. I’d be interested in what you make for it.
Don't bother no brace will help it's a material issue the one he bought for 500 will be rebranded Chinese junk
Tubular is the way to go I know I make them 😉
@@steakandchips9046how much do you charge for a tubular manifold?
Is the warping and cracking maybe due to you inserting lambda probes?
No I don’t think so. Nearly everyone who has these manifolds experience the same crack in the same place. It might be an issue with how the turbo is supported and there being too much weight on the manifold maybe
Really enjoy you videos mate 👍
Glad to hear it 🤙
I'm gonna venture a guess the real problem is the design of that manifold. It's a single chunk of cast iron converging into a single point. Basically there is too much of a difference in temperature across the manifold and it slowly wiggles itself bent across heat cycles.
Make sure you take a few clicks back of the boost controller before you go testing. I blew my engine on a overboost after I fixed a boost leak because I was compensating for the leak by uping the boost and kaput there was the engine 😅
Great advice 😂 more boost the better right 🤪
Well if the car is tuned for that boost level and have fueling all sorted out well is not that bad but I heard few stories and I experienced first hand 😅.
Unfortunately I think you might have another problem, I once drilled for new studs in a cast manifold ( not a VW) and they was not a 100% straight this meant the nuts kept coming loose as the nuts were not sitting flat against the manifold. So I think you might have the same problem as the face is flat but where the nuts sit is not, I think when you have the manifold off again get the back where the nuts sit machined. It took me a long time to find out what was wrong with mine this is how we live and learn.
Thanks for the advice bro. Not something most people think about.
Great vid as always. How are the coilovers holding up?
Yeah no complaints so far. I think I’m running them alittle low as I get wheel rub on the passenger side from the tyre but other than that still going strong
Would it hold up better from warping with a brace between the manifold and the nuts to make up for the material machined off (and then some)?
I doubt it mate. They are just shit and warp. It’s not just me, and I know it’s not just the spa one either.
Hi pal just a quck question hope you get time to reply
Your running the jr11 rims what size are they ?
Im thinking of going to 235/40/19
Think they are 225/40/18.
@OctaneFever hello 👋 I ended up going 235/35/19 and they transform the car tbh . Gives it a really wide stance and handles well. Running wise it's alot more pleasant than I thought it would be but it does scrub the arches if I drive over a big dip but nothing to worry about .
Would you reccomend a turbo ?
@@BarryRobinson-q4j good to hear and sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Yeah of course I would recommend turboing it. 😂
Hey, would you have a link to clutchpacks you have?
Checkout my video for the clutch packs. The part numbers and links are in the description. Cheers
you need to instal a proper heavy duty suport braket between engine block and turbocharger as all weight of the exhaust and turbocharger is on that manifold causing craks
Yeah that would probably help, it’s too late for me now as I’m swapping it out for something better
@@OctaneFever even if you use different one Please consider adding it as This situation may repeat btw big fan of the project keep on going mate
@@filiprolek7509 absolutely will. Thank you for the comments and support.
No bracket will help it's Chinese cast junk tubular is the way 👍
Could your head be warped??
I don’t think so. It would take a serious amount of heat to bend a head in that direction.
Iam student based of black alloys steel conected metals this is a problem that to make sure u have to look the crack is it with boubles maybe is a problem of fabric so welding it is another issue prehiting and welding it doesn’t garantee that it will not crack again the mixing of iron in that part is not perfect. Make a tubolar one
This guy is right, the material is the problem 👍
You should just go tubular, saves you all that time and cost each time, future proof’s it then, plus will look mega!
Bst turbo manifold or hpa?

The more you skim the manifold the easier it will warp.
Yep absolutely.
Get a gravituned one mate
They are lovely bit of kit!
Well one good thing you'll soon be able to change it in ten minutes with all the practice you're getting 😂 it will go again is my betting. Those manifolds are cheap junk tubular is the way mate 👍
And you were right lol. Just debating on the next manifold
if lambdas are surviving in the manifold yer no making enough power hehe
Wow! No offense but that company should reimburse you. Thats way too many times to remove and reinstall. Have you looked into CTS Motorsport and HPA Motorsports and HGP?
Imagine if he had to take it to a garage he would £££ into it just getting manifolds off
Yeah tell me about it. I have and I’m debating on my next manifold as the weld didn’t last very long 😂
And that was the purpose behind the video. So everyone can see that going cheap doesn’t work out especially if getting a company to do the work.
@@OctaneFever it looks to be that manifold doesn’t have relief cuts. Factory manifolds have the cut in the shape of the letter J. This allows for expansion.
Good video sir, By any chance invite you to do a product review, We specifically produce LEDs for auto. We just emailed for an inquiry.
