Scott Ballew just spews cosmetic songwriting out of his veins. Born in Texas, it's apparent the landscapes are big influences on his work. The songs he creates are often soundtracks to lonely drives on the highway. Heaviness through story is his niche.
On a New Orleans adventure, we captured “Morning Pirate” in an old jail rehabbed into a recording studio in the heart of Tremé. Scott had a tapestry of talent surrounding him, in friends and collaborators. Solid, real community. There is sure to be more coming from our time together, but we can’t say yet. Truly, it was an honor for us "songcatchers" to see it in person.
We can say, that beyond songwriting, Scott has a gift. A gift for bringing people together and showing us the meaning of collaborative art-making. Beyond his musical career, Scott Ballew is a 15 year veteran of making films, documentaries, and commercials. But his relationships with people he works with remains strong after the cameras stop rolling. Even during our filming week, more and more past creative professionals he worked with seemed to walk through the door, adding to the whole experience and making it more memorable and lovely in its own right.
His previous albums 'Talking to Mountains' ( 2021 ) and 'Leisure Rodeo' ( 2022 ) are visual escapes into your mind. We can honestly admit, you're not ready for his next record ‘Rio Bravo’. And it’s coming very soon.

I lost my father when i was 3 years old. now i'm almost 47 and i have so many stories to tell him, and things that i'd die to live with him. Your song made me cry and remember the man who made me who I am even if he wasn't there, but his story remained. Salute to all fathers of the world!

Scott is one of the most interesting artists I've come across in awhile. His lyrics, voice, music videos, and films are so unique. He's definitely become one of my favorite artists i've come across the past year.
Also call your dad if he is still around, i did after i heard this song.
Thanks for this, needed to hear it. I’m a dad who rarely sees his daughter and has some health stuff going on that isn’t terminal but has taken pretty much all the life out of me and there are some really dark times. Your song and perspective helps with that, many thanks 🙏
