I love the "I'm going to unzip my jacket here, it's getting warm". I grew up with guns; dad had a small gun supply store, a shooting range (we still have it), and a gun club back in the 1950's. The thing I miss the most in the gun world today is the bantering. My dad and his shooting friends picked on each other all the time, and no one was offended, not even the pros or the newbies. Today, in my experience, firearms people are as serious as a heart attack, and offended if picked on about anything. Another reason I love ASP and all the folks involved.
I hate it when everyone down plays shotguns as good defensive weapons cause of low capacity and a higher learning curve. But in the right hands in a realistic scenario, it's a great force multiplier.
What I train: PID target; mounting/presenting the weapon from high & low ready consistently and as quickly as I can staying on target; acquiring my target through my sight (green circle); pressing the trigger; working and maintaining my follow through and body position prepping for additional rounds on target; failure to fire drills (empty chamber, double feed, jammed case); reload ammunition source under stress (while moving, behind cover, awkward position, limited visibility, using timer, competing with peers); shoot from standing, kneeling, prone & from behind cover. I practice this with every weapon I own whether it holds 7, 15, or 30.
If you're in the UK, just about anyone can have a shotgun (if you want a rifle, you have to prove “good reason” - but for a shotgun the requirements are a little easier). Those shotguns are limited to two round magazines ... so a fast defensive reload skill in the UK becomes a little more interesting.
It’s my impression that actually using any firearm for defensive purposes by non-LE in England (maybe it’s different in other parts of UK) is generally a bigger problem than the likelihood of even needing to reload a 2 shot shotgun.
The reality is that _most_ defensive shotguns are going to be 4+1. Which means you cannot miss. And YES you can miss with a shotgun. You don't need to have rocket fast reloads, but you need to get practice and you need to be reliable. The number one malfunction in pump action shotguns is the operator. Train for an empty load/fire. Train for load 2. Train for fire 2, load 2. Run it HARD and *keep moving.*
Every time (EVERY TIME) my dogs have started raising hell at night...... it's been a predator trying to get into my chicken coop. I do NOT assume that's what it's going to be however. That's why I have a light attached.

When reviewing home invasion incidents I came to the same conclusion. Basically the only times during a home invasion where the defender actually got to their gun in time (this is CRITICAL) but still lost because they were outgunned was when the "invaders" had badges (that tragic case in Houston where the lead cop was recently convicted comes to mind). You just are not going to win that one. In every other situation that I can think of, as long as they got to their firearm they won the fight.
So, reloads aren't important because it's unlikely you would need to do it in a real-world self-defense scenario. But it's unlikely you will ever even be in a real-world self-defense scenario, so why bother with any of it? Some of us want to attain these skills that you always say every day civilians won't need, because we are thinking outside of the self-defense box and more along the lines of "a well-regulated militia" side of things. Just in case there was ever a need. Yeah, I know, fantasy band camp stuff, blah, blah.....

When there's a lawyer attached to every shot and a coroner attached to every miss, accuracy trumps everything.

Well that dedicated a practice regimen is great, and top 0.001% commitment!
Staging the gun is key and likely a better topic. Some people don't understand cruiser ready and how best to keep it ready for home defense.

Even at 4+1 you ain’t gonna need more than 5 in shotgun terms. Just the reality.

We generally prefer underhand.
I like shoot with magazine shot gun than feed tube . More quicker after change magazine than tube feed . Maybe 5 or 10 round each magazine .
You guys should try trap or clay disk shooting. But on a warm sunny day 😎 lots of fun 😁
