- Archie Macpherson is a bonafide Scottish Football icon having began his career as a broadcaster with the BBC over 60 years ago.
His time in the game has brought him into close contact with many legendary figures - including some of the greatest Celts of all time - and in part 1 of our exclusive 3 part series he talks candidly about the Celtic Rangers rivalry and how its evolved since his earliest memory of the fixture, way back in 1949.
His highly acclaimed book on the subject, "More Than A Game" centres on the 'Hampden Riots' of 1980, following a Scottish Cup Final clash between the two sides, but also features the gritty details of some of the most significant meetings of the two - on and off the park - over the decades.
🎙️ Join Tino for this special mini-series with broadcaster, writer and Scottish Football icon Archie Macpherson.

Great to hear from Archie. Scottish Football Legend 👍
100% Alan 👍🏻
I grew up with Archie’s commentary. Wooft … and all. What absolute football legend.💚🏴💚
Definitely @IronBhoy and a lovely fella too!
Tino once again what a great interview ,totally engrossing, loved it. Nice one Archie, HH
Cheers Michael. Archie was magic 👍🏻
Jeezo, you're playing a blinder Tino with these interviews.
Always had a lot of time for Archie. His admiration for Big Jock is obvious in his writing.
Cheers.
Thanks Gary. Archie's relationship with Jock played a big part in his life. all covered in Part 3 which will be out next week.
Dear Archie. If you read this. My favourite commentary moment of yours was when you described Shunsuke Nakamura as being able to "open a tin of beans with his left foot" as he curled it past Van Der Sar in the 82nd minted. Celtic 1-0 Manchester United. This was my childhood and it goes without saying these moments have taken on legendary status in the history of Celtic. All of my school mates fondly remember you commentary. Part of us growing up! And Johnathan Watson's - Only an Excuse Parody of your "woof!" You are a legend. It goes without saying - A much loved character in Scottish football. Your family will be very proud of you. And you will be forever well thought of. Delighted you've still got all your mental faculties about you. Old but Gold. Would you come back on Celtic TV for one last hurrah. One Last woof! Just googled his - 87! Brilliant! Bring him back!
Brilliant comments @stb - we'll make sure Archie sees this directly 🍀
Cheers again timo my man every interview I'm glued , I'm missing our celtic bigtime
Thanks Neilly, glad you enjoyed.
It’s Tino btw 😀
Thank you Tino. Great interview with Archie the great TV football narrator. I am glad to hear him talking and writing about a difficult cancerous subject in Scottish society. Having left the UK 40 odd years ago distance gives one a healthier perspective on the subject. Celtic need Rangers, and Rangers need Celtic. We need to respect one another and I am encouraged by the many good supporters from the Glasgow divide. 🍀🍀🍀
Good comments @MRC and glad you enjoyed the episode.
“More Than A Game” is a really good write, woukd highly recommend it.
@@TheCelticExchange Thank you Tino. I shall look out for it. 🌟🙏

Cheers @mark thanks for watching 👍
Brilliant !
Cheers John 👍🍀
This is stunningly good what a coup lads .It's Great to see Archie talking football 👌🏽.....p.s IS THIS A BIT OF HISTORY........IT IS
😂 Davie Provan's free kick at Hampden! We spoke about that off air!
@TheCelticExchange brilliant I really like archie I've got one if his books from the library just now I was at that game half way up the stand behind the goal and had an amazing veiw of both goals when magarvey scored it's the wildest sceans I've ever seen a following celtic .that's some brilliant guest s I would love to see Danny magrain big pat bonner even brian scott I spoke to him one time in the fort and told him I was sorry and hated they way the club got rid of him he was really delighted by that as he said to me but even brian would have some great tales for us supporters to hear great celtic channel this I think it's the best anyway and the theme song is class as I have mentioned before great stuff Bhoys keep it comeing
@@kegalormoon Brilliant stuff @kega! Thanks for the kind comments. Archie was a brilliant guest! His book on Jock Stein, as well as 'More Than A game' are both excellent!
I remember going to the Jungle and we used to sing Archie Archie give us a wave, and to his credit he always did.
He still gets recognised now @marty - 87 years young! 🙌
An absolute enjoyable podcast. Archie is an excellent listen. Well done!
Thanks Vincey, glad you enjoyed it 🍀
Grew up with Archie commenting , a class act imo!!!
He was brilliant @ccw
Loved it
Great stuff Thomas 👍🏻
Celtic Exchange Interview Podcast. Yet more fantastic Celtic content. Better than the mainstream media coverage by a country mile. Hail. Hail. Thanks for this.
Thanks for watching @STB
Was there with me Dad and 3 brothers and my best friend came over from Belfast.
What was it like on the day Robert? Bedlam after the game?
I hate the "both sides" narrative. Its lazy a cop out. Rangers fans dislike me and other celtic fans because they see us irish Catholics. I dislike Rangers fans because they are bigots
I am a non-catholic Celtic fan but I still suffer sectarian and anti Catholic abuse which actually shows how ignorant they actually are. I chose Celtic given a choice because of the clubs socialist and benevolent culture.
Definitely understand your point there @htc - Archie is against bigotry in any/all forms and covers that well in the book ("More Than A Game")
I know for a fact that there are many bigots on both sides. Colour does not preclude you from ignorance
Just catching up Tino , this is 👍🍀
Great stuff, cheers Geo 🍀
Scottish fitba LEGEND .. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
100% Ricky 💪
Excellent stuff again Tino!! No doubt JPD will be green with envy (pardon the pun)
Cheers Moe.
Do you mean Paul John? If so then far from it. It was him who put me in touch with Archie in the first place. He’s been a brilliant help to me.
@TheCelticExchange fair enough I retract the PJ. Brilliant content though again Tino 👌🏽
@@moeszyslak7304 Great stuff, thanks Moe 🙌
Great content again Tino. However, you failed to challenge his same club narrative and his assertion that both sets of fans are bigots - simply not true.
Thanks @magnet He makes quite a clear point of saying Rangers were liquidated and that his opinion then is that a certain version of Rangers now exists.
He's completely against bigotry in any form and offers a really balanced viewpoint in his book ("More Than A Game")
Archies book on Jock, and his flower of Scotland book are both worth a read. He has a few hilarious stories, one about the Scotland warm up games before the 1974 world cup is priceless. Jinky and Bremner are having a party in the room and Willie Ormond is sent to the room to put a stop it, Ormond ends up joining the party and ends up steaming, and has to be stopped from attacking one of the sfa blazers. Some good stories from his time working for Eurosport, good story about how he fell out with Ferguson, not sure if they ever made up. Think it was Archie who cracked Tommy McLean because he thought wee Tommy was going to crack him, he wasn't, he just wanted to thank him for something lol. Cheers Tino.
He’s a man full of stories @myt 😂 All as a result of over 60 years in the game here in Scotland. His experiences are countless.
I don’t think he ever has patch things up with Alex Ferguson which is a shame as it sounds like they were fairly close at one point.
@@TheCelticExchange Always liked Archie Tino, some Celtic fans I know don't like him because they think he is a closet supporter of our rivals, same with some of them, they think he supports us. Ask him about when the Scotland fan tried to dip Bryan Robsons wallet at the 98 world cup, five minutes after Robbo had been telling Archie how much he loved the Scotland fans lol.
Commentating on live games on Eurosport being played in mainland Europe, from his living room, kidding on he was in the stadium lol.
Great Interviews mate, I even watched the one with Shug Keevins, wi the volume turned off 👍.
@@mytmt1613 Thanks @myt he's just a really decent guy with stories upon stories of Scottish football - many of which include the Celtic greats! 🍀
😂 Did you just watch the Shug episode with the subtitles on...?!
You'll be a long time deid Archie - Bring him back! An articulate football encyclopaedia . Get him on the commentary team. One final season. One final Hurrah - woof! Get this man a seat in the directors box of Parkhead. God bless you Archie! Get Peter Lawwell and Celtic TV on the phone!
Lot going on in this comment @stb 😂
I may be speaking out of tongue here but i would have been all over his remark about rangers "surviving" and challenging that
No prob with the comment, all good 👍 Have answered elsewhere
I always preferred Arthur Montford over Archie growing up. However, I now find myself looking for any interview, anywhere in which he features. I could listen to him talking about football all day and night. Maybe it’s because he’s not commentating anymore, that I can listen to him without my own bias and appreciate his opinions and insight. It also makes me more convinced than ever that retired ex players are, with a few exceptions, absolutely stealing money by explaining to football fans what they have have just seen for themselves. Fans love to watch football players playing football. I, for one, am not enamoured to listen to football players describe events with the added insult of dotted lines and circles, as if I were blind. Get proper broadcasters back on commentary and banish inanity. Sorry Tino, what I meant to say was, great show and another three points. Good work fella
Thanks for the comments Iain, really appreciated.
Archie was brilliant and his stories on Scottish Football are second to none. Think you'll really like Parts 2&3 on Lisbon & Jock Stein 👍🍀
We Are The People🏴🇬🇧
Great stuff Kristel 😂 Hows that going for you?
I absolutely know that Celtic fans are no angels however if you look back to the 50s to present day when there has been trouble at Celtic v Rangers games the common denominator is that Rangers lost those games.
Possibly John. As you'd expect Archie's against any/all forms of bigotry and covers around 75 years of Celtic v Rangers rivalry in the book.
Interesting pod. Always thought Archie was more inclined to the blue side of the city, although that was largely an impression gained from watching Only an excuse 😂😂
😂 The impression I get is that he's a football fan first and foremost and he puts across really balanced opinions when it comes to all that. "More Than A Game" is a brilliant read.
Fergus wis booed on flag day because he wis seen as having driven Wim the Tim, the manager who had stopped the ten, away from the club
There'll be some truth in that Stephen, but as you'll maybe pick up from the recent Jock Brown interview (covered in great detail in his book too) there's definitely two sides to that story.
From the blue corner. Will listen to the rest later but re the MoJo point, the adverse reaction from Rangers fans is vastly over reported. Crowds and season tickets went up in 89/90 and I can assure you the vast majority lapped up the player and the impact he had on both ourselves and Celtic. Apparently only 30 STs were returned from fans who weren’t missed in any way.
Hi @pips hadn't heard that crowds/season tickets went up at Ibrox at that time, but guess its not something we've looked at in great detail. Would it not be fair to say the reaction to Johnston signing was mixed at best though? It seemed to upset a lot of people.
Thanks for your comment, appreciated 👍
@@TheCelticExchange I think my angle is that the media loved to put the extremes in front of a camera and make it representative of the majority. While there may well have been moans from some in blue it didn’t translate to the stands. MoJo’s first game at ibrox if I recall correctly was Spurs preseason…the only dissent I heard that day was ‘c’mon the Queen’s ten’. It was met with light hearted laughter as it was intended to.
The rivalry has certainly changed…I was in Stuttgart with my Celtic supporting pal, same age, mid-fifties, and while we were no doubt full of it in our twenties we agreed that the modern rivalry is so tedious, filled with faux offence, grievance and a pretence the ‘war’ is still going on. It isn’t. It’s over. Can we not just enjoy the difference, keep some comedy goading and hope for some better football on the pitch (particularly at our place!)
@@TheCelticExchange I know Rangers fans who never went back after MJ signed. I never liked him at the club, myself. Because he was signed purely to stick it up Celtic and had zero to do with ending the bar on RC players. Also, we all know in our hearts that players care little for the 'badge'. So to have it illustrated in such a way, kinda saddened me a wee bit. Great interview though, sir.
As a 14 year gave Archie abuse he is a Gentleman 🤣🍀
I’ll pass him your apologies Dan 😂
I love Archie, part of my childhood to adult life. But he still fails to go where it needs to go. He sees it but won’t say it. Skirts around it, then condenses it into some vague tribalism.
The idea of Rangers survived. But their club is new.
I'd need to push back on that one to an extent Richard. In spite of the thankless task that it is here in the West of Scotland Archie HAS pushed back against some of the bigotry we see on several occasions - including calling out his former employers at the BBC.
He provides more detail in the More Than A Game book, but to suggest he hasn't called it out is plain wrong.
@@TheCelticExchange Fair enough if he has in the past or does so in the book. He doesn’t nail it in that interview.
Was a great rivalry that thankfully ended in 2012
Good while it lasted @henke... 😀
Fergus was bood because he was hindering managers in the transfer market
I dont quite agree with that @monti - in the Wim Jansen season he brought in Larsson, Burley, lambert, Brattbakk, Marc Reiper amongst others
Ranger didn't die 😊 he should have been put right on facts .
Unbelievable
Archie agrees that Rangers were liquidated John
He's right about national identity. If Archie's for the British - that's fine. He's a red Clydesider. But I'm for Independence for Scotland. We need new Clydesiders. God bless Alex Salmond. The Dream Shall never die. Sturgeon - The JUDAS - LOCK HER UP!
You’ve gone a bit off topic here @stb 😀
rangers didn't survive archie
He accepts they were liquidated @monti 👍
@@TheCelticExchangemost of them accept they where liquidated, undeniable….its the consequences of said liquidation they deny, stop letting them redefine liquidation…Brad Wiggins is getting liquidated, can I buy his assets and become Olympic gold medalist and Tour de France winner?!
@@celticsole7542Emh, no, you cannot
Love this interview. But what the fuck are you on about comparing Fergus McCan to Saddam Hussein?! I think Archie was asking why Celtic fans were angry at Fergus at the time (Jansen resigning days after winning the league on top of Di Canio, Cadette and Van Hooidonk leaving in a huff the summer before was the reason fans were pissed off and rightly so TBH) What has Saddam Hussien got to do with it?!?
J you must have missed it at the time but it was in reference to a back page headline when Fergus McCann was in charge.
You can read about it here on Celtic Wiki 👇

@@TheCelticExchange Ah. Sorry, my mistake. Awesome interview though. Love it. Archie hates the tories. 😂
At seventy years old I am allways interested in hearing from the old legends on Scottish soorts. Archie and Arthur Montford were the mainstay men on the tube back in the late sixties and seventies. And a terrible Stramash took place in the Rangers penalty box !
Great stuff @den hope you enjoyed this one 🍀
Archie deluded thinking rangers survived, got liquidated end of,totally new club .
He says that they were liquidated @michael 👍
Wit a team eh
🍀
I detest VAR. Get Archie on the commentary. The football pundits are so inarticulate. You hear guys like Archie MacPherson and Clive Tydesley and they are far better at describing in play situations. It's what you want to hear. Football commentary has become lazy. Bring him back - he'll be a long time deid. Get this man a job for the coming season at Celtic TV!
European nights with Archie MacPherson. Bring him on board GENTS DO IT!
Can't see Archie getting back into commentary now @STB but you never know...👀
Regular listener, and a fan of your stuff,,but i have to be honest, listening to Archie repeatedly state that Celtic and Rangers are as bad as each other, with regards to bigotry as well as his Rangers are the same club nonsense smacks of the usual MSM content from the likes of Clyde etc,,i at least expect you to challenge these type of comnents Tino,,i enjoy all Celtic media for the fact that the MSM stuff is woeful but to watch Archie talk patent nonsense about Celtic and its fans on a prominent Celtic fan media platform unchallenged is extremely poor.
Cheers David. Have covered this in other comments but possible that Archie's viewpoints haven't come across as clearly in this 30min or so recording as they do in his book on the matter.
Never liked Archie, had no range in his vocabulary. Used to say "and he's let fly..." About 10 times a game and spent the rest of the time speaking in 4 word gasps.
Useless commentator.
Each to their own @sandersson
