please Don't say like the Japanese don't treat them fairly. they have been teaching all traditional arts and martial arts to foreigners since long ago. Otherwise jiu-jitsu and judo are not popular with foreigners. Don't blindly Believe Western Media's Biased Stereotypes. It is the Westerners who have not always treated other races fairly.
These traditional jobs are difficult to assess even for those born in the Japan. Even many Japanese with his level of skill are not evaluated. Don't attribute everything to the fact that you are a foreigner. There is no reason not to give a fair evaluation just because you are a foreigner. I am not saying that all japanese are fair, but they are rare. Or, when they are not treated fairly, there is only a problem with the personality and manners of the foreigner himself. Adam, I am a fellow plant lover, the connection I have with the plants I feel you also have. I was lucky enough to realize that taking care of plants was what I wanted to do from a very young age. I used to live down the street from “Ben’s House of Bonsai”. He’d been in Japan during the war, became enamored with bonsai, stayed and studied and returned to his home in Salt Lake City, Utah. He eventually had to sell his beautiful garden shop and retired. He moved to a senior apartment, and later died. His garden stock was largely bought by collectors and a local garden shop, but the buildings were going to be bulldozed. I went and “scavenged whatever I could with the contractor’s permission. I retrieved an iron lantern, lacquered shelf, stepping stones, many tools and supplies. I gave the tools and supples to a friend who is dedicated to bonsai. The stepping stones are in a memorial garden, and the lantern hangs on my balcony, with a view to the beautiful lacquered shelf. Ben gave me many lessons in pruning, and it remains my favorite gardening passion. He left such a legacy of appreciation for the art, whether it’s a mini bonsai or a larger (but still very short, under 5 feet) bonsai. Such a beautiful art!

Never heard of him… but nice video! I’m into Japanese bonsai and niwaki. I like bonsai… but I love niwaki and J gardens much more. Unlike the much more popular/known practice of bonsai, niwaki and J gardening is rarely taught outside of Japan.

Though the real meaning I feel I understand through study with my subconscious of 'Bonsai Tree' is a trapped spirit or tree (The ancient art of trapping a tree spirit).. this means that the Bonsai is a powerful tree spirit and may be dark or light. The Zen comes from the release the tree feels once it's finally freed (Although often this is only temporary) the immense feeling the tree expresses after being trapped for long periods of time gives the look and feel of Zen. The BONSAI TREE SPIRIT if tormented without care and love will become a dark tree spirit or evil bonsai, while a bonsai treated with a great deal of love and care (a Zen experience of patience) can result in a light spirit of the bonsai or good bonsai. While I'm not sure if anywhere can confirm this, it still speaks strongly to me when experiencing the bonsai tree or the spirit of the bonsai tree... If anyone knows or has heard this as ancient lore please fill us in more. P.S. I'm looking at creating a 'European Ash' Bonsai tree as I feel this is the sacred ash from Norse mythology and the world tree 'Yggdrasil' I feel it would make a great bonsai in honor of the Norse mythology this ash tree is found in the region of the Norse (I think... correct me if I'm wrong).
I practice bonsai, not nearly as much as the guy in this video, but I would guess: Japanese Black Pines, Japanese Maples, Larches, Junipers, and Azaleas. There are many but these offer a nice diverse variety.
I would like to do some dawn redwood, and a true Chinese juniper of some sort from Japan. There are some really pretty weeping trees that I think would be real fun and then there is all the different hard wood trees... So many choices lol

Not to be a hater, but this sounds like some long weird flex and stretched truth. He claims to have worked 90 hour weeks every week but in reality that probably only happened a few times during peak growing season or it was because of mis-manged time. I doubt he worked 90 hour weeks mid-winter when most of the trees were in full-on hibernation, but what do I know. Still cool to hear about the journey even if it was up-hill, through the snow, both ways

There are not so many Master any more in Japan, and my understanding is that he is "busy" so all in all, it seems to match what he need.

They will be called "Sensei" usually in Japan or "Artist", and Master is more for the English world.

Been living myself in Japan for now 20 years. His story match what I have seen many times over here when it comes to apprentice.
