--------------- Hey guys here with a quick and easy video showing you how to replace the front brake pads on a 2011-2019 F30 chassis BMW 328i. These are the "regular" brake calipers (sliding calipers) and not the performance fixed calipers found on the M3/M4 models.

Great video. I changed the brakes for the first time following this. Didn't have a compression tool but pushed the piston using a screwdriver. Thanks
Thankful for the video, saved me £200 being able to do it myself. I did find pumping the pedal before putting the reservoir cap back on was much better.

Really helpful video great focus on each part of the process, most diy people would feel confident of success after your instruction,the only thing I would add is something I’ve done in the past that is to remove the brake reservoir cap before starting and use a paper kitchen towel to soak up some of the fluid before starting, making sure you have the correct one to top if necessary when finished, thus avoiding any spillage. Liked & subscribed

Just followed this for my 3 series 2016 GT all you need to replace you pads. Mobileake sure you have the tools before you start I had to go get the hex socket! 😄

Great job. Easy Peasy! Don’t forget to torque the wheel bolts! I torque them to 80 ft lbs.
I thought the F30s had M14 bolts, which requires 140Nm (103.2587 ft-lb)?

The front brakes will be 99% similar on the G30 with the only exception being the size of the bolts. They will be of the same bolt head style, just could be different sized sockets is all.
If they are are sport brakes or m package brake, then those are completely different. If I get a customer that has one come in, I will definitely make a video.

Good but you need to apply brake grease in the 2 slots where the pads slide inwards and outwards. To avoid squeaks and to avoid binding.

Dont forget to loosen that lid on the brake master cylinder before pushing pack the caliper.
7:30 I unscrew the caliper bleeder a half turn or so when compressing the caliper piston. This evacuates the fluid that has been in the caliper for years instead of pushing it back up into the system. Then top off the brake fluid reservoir.
Great vid my friend...thumbs up subbed. I'm going to help my buddy who has a F32 428i this weekend. His has the single piston caliper(looks exactly the same as the F30 I assume)compared to my F82 M4C which are even easier Brembo 4 piston calipers to replace pads on.
Yes the fixed piston brake calipers are MUCH easier than the sliding calipers on the bmws. Fixed calipers are easy on everything.

Great video! Probably the best one about doing brakes on anF30. Do you HAVE to replace the sensor? My understanding is that it is basically a wire that wares through when the brakes get to a certain point, so if you replace the pads before that, you might not need to replace the sensor and save a few bucks...
Luke Kondratowicz No you do not have to replace the sensor. Only if the brakes have worn down considerably (metal on metal) you will notice that the sensor gets destroyed.
If you can get the small metal clip and sensor out of the old brake pad without breaking it you’re good to reuse it.

Usually just one side. However some of the higher up trim levels have both sides.
Great video! So it would be the same process on 2014 320i? I assume since it is a f30 it would be the same. Took my daughters bmw to the dealer and was told the front breaks needs to be replaced along with rotors and sensor. How do known if the rotor needs to be replaced? The car only has 57k miles.
Also did you not need to use grease on the back of the pads?
Did you not need to use a torque wrench?
It would be very similar yes. Rotors are these cars are designed to be changed with the pads. You might be able to get away with just doing the pads sometimes. However if you notice the very outside of the rotor face (the shiny part) there begins to be a very hard lip on the edge. If you just slap on new pads. Sometimes it’s ok but other times they will squeak and keep on squeaking.
It would be wise to change rotors as well if you can afford it. If you can’t now well hey that’s life and you do what you can do. New brake pads will ALWAYS be better than nothing. But make sure you replace the rotors the next time around.
PLEASE note: my personal recommendation is to replace pads and rotors.
No grease on the back of the pads. Some people (older people and younger kids taught by older people) still put grease on the back of pads.
Some pads still require this step. However 95% of brake pads made today have backing plates or pads to reduce noise. If there is nothing on the back of the pads you get, then use grease.
I am sure there are torque specs around on the internet. I have been doing brakes for years. Not once have I used a torque wrench. I use a torque wrench when tightening the lug nuts but that’s it ons brake job. I get them nice and snug and that it plenty.

Mark C Yes you can use multi purpose grease. Mine is valvoline brand and it’s red. I use it all the time on the slide pins and bearings.
Hi, I did the same job as you did. I even used the same Akebono pads from fcoeuro. Every thing went well. I have two questions.
1. What is the thin wire or cable into the wheel in addition to the sensor, the brake hydraulic line?
2. The brake rotor gets much hotter than the rear brake rotors. I just did the front only. The rear brakes were not worked by me. Again I did the same work as you did for the front brakes.
Is is normal for the rotors get hot?

1. I assume you’re talking about the brake wear sensors? They are copperish color and push into the back of the brake pads? OR you are talking about the ABS wheel speed sensor wire.
2. Yes it is normal for brake rotors to get hot. That is their job to convert kinetic energy into thermal energy.

1. Lug bolts: 90 ft. Lbs.
2. Rotor retaining screw: 11.8 ft. Lbs.
3. Caliper guide pin: 22 ft. Lbs.
4. Caliper bracket bolt: 80 ft. Lbs.

Brilliant video, my warning light came on so I ordered a new set. Went to change the pads but they was done less than a year ago so thought it was odd, when I looked at the pads they weren't even 3/4 worn down. Could the warning light come on if the last person to change the pads never reset the mileage? NEW SUBSCRIBER FROM THE 🇬🇧 👌
Rear pads have wear sensors too. Check the rear pads.

Check the connectors for the wear sensors and make sure they didn’t come loose. If they look good, Replace the wear sensors and see if the problem persists.

Brake caliper compression tool. There are MANY companies that make them.

It looks just like mine I actually haven’t seen many pearl whites. Most are alpine white.

Hey, so I just did this brake job thanks to you but I get a continuous click click click noise at any speeds when cruising, it goes away when I press the brakes... Any ideas what it could be? Appreciate the help in advance!
Something is loose or not placed right. Try to figure out which side and take it apart again to see what’s wrong. Chances are it will present itself
After replacing front rotors and brake pads hearing rattling sound on rough roads ONLY from front left side wheel.Can you please let me know if you have any suggestions on it!
John B Loose brake hardware. Forgot to tighten a bolt.
After replacing Front caliper anti-rattling clips properly sound was gone.

Probably didn’t. Definitely use one or two or ten.
So you do not have to do rotors?? My dd is 90% highway driven my first pads will have 85000 miles on them..Thank you !!
You most certainly can do the rotors if they have significant wear on them or have large scoring on them.

Front sport package should be 340mm and non sport should be 312mm
Rears should be 345mm sport or non sport.

Do these brake pads offer better bite than the OEM pads?
Sam Page I wouldn’t say they give better bite than O.E. pads. I will say 100% less dusting. That matters to me as I don’t want to be cleaning my rims every two days (O.E. pads) I could go almost 2 weeks without these pads dusting. They offer very similar performance to OE pads.

I’m sorry I don’t have one as of now. They will be very similar to the front brake process aside from smaller bolt sizes.
Will this work on my 2019 bmw 540i x drive
While I can’t say 100% it will work, I couldn’t imagine BMW would change their entire braking system up that much. It is probably about 80% similar aside from maybe different bolt sizes.

Michael Foell Yes. Otherwise you will not be able to fit the new brake pads into the calipers.

Where do you put the brake pad paste? Isn't it mandatory?
On cheap pads. However most modern brake pads come with backing plates/vibration shims already on them. Especially on higher end luxury cars
My car has new brake pads, but when coming to a stop the car makes like squeaking noise but the thing is that it’s on & off.
What brand pads? And what material? And did you replace the rotors?
whats the torque for the caliper bolts or do you just go to tight?
I personally just get them snug. A quick google search should get you these results.
@@HelpingHandAutoRepair awesome, snug fit works for me, I have the BMW manual and it has torque values (in NM) and I really don't want to try to get a wrench all the way behind there!
@@jbond119 well by all means follow it if you can. However I get the bolts snug. I saw follow it if need be because obviously we are all of different strengths and your “snug” might be tighter or looser than my snug.
Are you sure it's a 8mm caliper bolt? My 2014 F34 has 9mm.

David Genkin No car REQUIRES new disc. It’s entirely dependent on the condition of the disc.
You don't need to change in new rotor discs at the same time?
That’s dependent upon two things.
1. Condition of the rotors.
2. Money.

Yes if they have severe grooves on them or not. Minimum rotor thickness is normally stamped right onto the rotor hat.

What and where am I supposed to lubricate?
Modern high quality pads have a backing that doesn't require lube, but you still need to apply a dab on the pad ears where they contact the caliper and slide back and forth

This isn’t a 1975 bronco. Pad technology has come a very long way.

Helping Hand Auto Repair Nevermind. Your video was very helpful. Just finished brakes. The only think is that for my caliper bolts I needed an Allen wrench to remove bolts. The easiest way is to used an Allen wrench socket. I was thinking it was a standard socket but I realized you need an Allen wrench to remove caliper bolts. Overall well done. You made mechanics lose profit because I did this myself. 😂

Always do from the farthest to the closest from the master cylinder. The passenger side should have been done first.
Scrat over Negative, it doesn’t matter which you do first. If you were bleeding the system then you are correct. However nothing is being bled.
holly molly, where are your jack pads man, also you can use a turkey baster or similar items from amazon to extract the break fluid, you don't want any of that on your engine bay. You also need grease and tread locker.
Mr. Pabs My jack pads are attached to the car, like all other BMW and Mercedes are. Never needed a turkey Baster, thread locker on caliper bolts you will regret. Grease on the back of the pads? Grease on the slide pins you can.
