Cruelty squad is walking example of don’t judge a book by its cover.

I think that, in general, how well a game pulls off its art style, regardless of what that is, and how well the performance stacks up, is far more important than realism. That said, I also love when games push what's possible in terms of rendering, like the path tracing in Alan Wake II and Cyberpunk, or the environmental density of Avatar. In cases like that part of the enjoyment of the game, for me, definitely arises from the realism and graphical fidelity. Great video!

I think art style/graphics are in a unique position where the developers are allowed to experiment with what looks good and fits their game rather than other elements where there is a general right and wrong way to do it. Thank you!

    This is really good video!
I think that graphics definitely matter for all games, but some more than others. Celeste has one of my favorite art styles and it’s literally 8-bit. I think graphics for games are fine as long as the art style/graphical style suits the game.

I forgot about Celeste, I should’ve put it in here. That game looks so pretty especially is that nature area near the end of the game when you fall really far down

Short answer... yes. I didn't spend all this money on my TV and setup to play nes and PS2 looking games, I expect the best in 2024 from graphics to attention to detail.

It depends on the game. Honestly the majority don't need them but if you're making something like a Red Dead 2 or Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 then yes photo-realism is and should be the goal.

I'm dying to see new games that utilize PS1-PS2 era designs, art style, etc. ~Even tho Tech has advanced, I wish the game industry would alter their approach to gaming. Bring back previous gen games. We don't need hyper realistic graphics. I'd rather we embrace creative artistic depictions. Game projects like that will cost less $, take less time to build. We drastically need more game selection to our current library. We need games that harness the obscure, extreme, wacky, absurd, grotesque kind of art designs. Designs that have shown to be timeless. Cell shaded, low poly effects, pre rendered backgrounds, 2D, 2.5D, creative 3D that's not trying to be hyper realistic. Inspiration from previous gens shouldn't stop, just because new consoles have come out. Timeless games don't need hyper realistic graphics. Some of the best games utilize creative art styles such as Sly Cooper. Anytime I've said this there is usually one person in the comments who always says: "well we have indie games" but that's not my point. I wish the gaming industry would recalibrate their focus & start making games for consoles with all sorts of styles & designs. Just look at current Gen consoles Game Library's? It's NOTHING compared to the N64, PS1, Xbox, GameCube, dreamcast, 360, PS2, Sega Saturn, classic PC games, etc. Life would be amazing If game companies will start making games that are inspired by these previous gen designs. We shouldn't leave those unique aspects of gaming in the past. Hopefully the struggles of the modern triple AAA games will organically transition the gaming industry back towards a better direction. It's exhausting how long it's taking for most games to be made. Just for a lot of those games to end up being total let down projects anyways. It's crazy. Idk how these game companies have been able to keep getting away with this BS. I really took so much for granted in video gaming when I was growing up.. I can now see how lucky I was to grow up through out the entire transition from the pixel art consoles to PS1, N64, dreamcast. Then continued on.. So many amazing games were made and released during that era.. They all really had this passion project heart to them vibe. I hope the gaming industry can find that again.. It would only bring success so don't let anyone talk you out of it. Reconnect to the heart of gaming. Creative expression. Unique ways to Escape the world. Let our imagination run wild

Do you mean graphics to just look “worse”? A lot of games back then were aiming for realism it just looks nothing like it. You mentioned that a lot of people say that they’re plenty of indie games with unique art styles but I’m still confused as to why they aren’t what you’re looking for. It sounds as if you want gaming as a whole to just revert to how it was when you were younger
