This video takes me back to the days of my late-Romantic youth. When I was a university student in New York in the Sixties, I passed many evenings at the Metropolitan Opera, hearing and watching Mirella as Gounod's Marguerite and Juliette, as Puccini's Mimì and Liù, as Mozart's Susanna, and in other roles. I was a welcome guest in her dressing room after every performance. And I remember with particular nostalgia the occasion upon which she gave me a lift back to Manhattan in her chauffeured limousine after a "Bohème" in Philadelphia, where I had gone to attend her performance. We conversed all the way: for me, it was a true enchanted evening! The huge crush that I had on her was a factor in my decision, thirty-eight years ago, to come to live in Italy. (And I'm still here in Milan.)
My first Faust was at the recently opened Metropolitan Opera House in November 1966, Mirella Freni was Marguerite and Nicolai Ghiaurov was Mephistopheles (and Sherrill Milnes was Valentin). She was wonderful, the performance was wonderful, a night at the Opera.
What a great experience . I had some great ones too with another opera diva soprano . Fresno is an awesome teacher and a very cool woman and of course she was at the top of her game back in the 60’s-70’s as were all those singers .

Très belle voix ! Mais quel dommage qu'on ne comprenne rien du tout au texte !!! Le bel canto au détriment de l'histoire qui est racontée...Le "artistiquement correct" fait que seule la performance vocale est jugée. D'ailleurs, le conventionnel refuse la traduction en français de certains airs italiens...soit disant parce que la langue italienne est plus jolie en chantant...quel conformisme ! Alors les opéras en allemands, en anglais en français peuvent aller se rhabiller ? Je suis chanteuse amateure et j'ai décidé de traduire les airs que je chanterai (dans le cadre d'un concert du choeur dont je fais partie) en français. Notre auditoire est composé à 90% de français qui viennent se divertir, et pas chipoter sur la qualité vocale chère à la crème des professionnels du lyrique. Je revendique la compréhension du texte avant la qualité vocale quand on est dans un cadre populaire. Moi-même je ne mettrais pas 100€ pour écouter une diva. Je l'ai fait une fois pour écouter Nathalie Dessay et j'ai regretté car elle ne les valait mes 100€ !
@@user-lb8km1kd9t non, n'exagérons rien. Je suis française et je suis loin, très loin de tout comprendre, à part quelques passages. Mais il semble que le français soit toujours un problème, encore plus pour les non francophones.

One of my all-time favorite sopranos for this repertoire. Saw her live several times at the Lyric in Chicago in the early 80's.
