    While using ultra-wide lenses, and the talent mouth is barely attached to the mic, both mics sound great. It would be useful to test how both mics perform when using longer lens focal distances (35 to 50mm) and the talent is more distant to the mics

      I will say it does a better job of blocking the wind vs ecm-b1m. I think the ecm-b1m sounds slightly better when the M1 is in Ultra mode is sounds close. If I was buying one or the other today I would probably buy the M1. I was going to sell my ecm-b1m and upgrade but decided to keep the b1m.

      Yes there is a reason the B1M is the same price. Sony still considers it to be the best Sounding microphone. The M1 just has different modes. They are close (when in the front directional mode), but the B1M for sure is better sounding.

    ECM-M1 sounds pretty much like ECM-B10, the sound is slightly thinner compared with ECM-B1M, but still high quality though. On the other hand, ECM-B1M sounds fuller with slight more bass and therefore i think it has better sound quality. ECM-B1M also potentially has better range than ECM-M1. I know ECM-B1M beats ECM-B10 in terms of range because I compared them before.
    I do like ECM-M1 for its more varieties of sound modes, making it a way more versatile and also lesser handling noise compared to ECM-B1M.

    • @PaulFeinberg
      @PaulFeinberg  11 месяцев назад

      Pretty much spot on with everything. M1 did seem to have less handling noise. Of course probably due to the size and that it does balance well due to the design.

  • @mikenzkr
    @mikenzkr 5 месяцев назад

    Apart from sounding thinner on the M1 (less proximity effect), I also hear more weird phasing particularly when talking off axis. B1M sounds more like a natural polar pattern switch between mics and it sounds like the M1 is using some phase sorcery in its “beaming” tech to offer the multiple polar patterns it does. Noise cancellation sounds pretty aggressive on both - a bit of ducking particularly noticeable at the head of words. I’d probably not use the noise cancelling on the mic and do it more subtly in post. The ducking just makes it more distracting and noticeable. Pretty impressed at the quality on both though, and I can see those rear/front modes on the M1 being really handy. Thanks for the awesome review.

    I know they are 2 very different mics... Sony being no cable but only on Sony with the NTG no 8 patterns but works on everything inc usbc PC mic and can be boomed in...

      Purely sound quality….Rode NTG all the way. The M1 sounds good in Ultra mode and super. The rest need some EQ’ing. The Rodes sound the best, but the convenience of no cables, no charging and all the different modes makes the Sony a win for me. The Sony’s still sound good, but not as good as rode, but there are trade offs. If only sound quality was your concern though Rode NTG. I am still using my ECM-B1M since I don’t need all the modes from the M1. I still keep my rode NTG video mic as well so I can boom when needed. Hope this helps!

    Thanks for the detailed comparison and test. The feature sets are AMAZING, but I have to say the sound quality is a real let down. It’s got hyped highs (mostly ~9 kHz), which a lot of people mistake for "clarity", and it sounds sibilant. In most settings it’s kinda fine, although 13 minutes into the video I just can’t stand it anymore. But then, the Super Directional mode sounded just plain bad to me. Not only does it have the exaggerated highs, but also loses a lot of bass (of which there isn’t a ton to begin with). If there’s nothing there, no EQ in the world can fix correct it in post. Ooof.

    As noted below in a previous comment, I'm trying to develop a hobby of shooting documentaries when I travel internationally. I really like the new mic, but is this really the type of mic I need for interviewing subjects? It would appear not---the mic seems to be strictly for someone who is speaking directly into the camera, maybe 3 feet away. Wireless mics seem to have even better sound, are just as small, and allow the camera to be placed much farther away. Help me out, am I wrong? How far away can the speaker and still pick up good audio?

      Right in front of the camera is what this mic is designed for. Sounds like you want a wireless solution. I have plenty of options at plenty of price points, just depends on needs and budget.
