Sterling, one of the other great features with the Action 4 (with a firmware update) is that you can pair it with a DJI Mic 2 transmitter. So the camera can be left in normal configuration (waterproof) and you can still record audio in helmet (as long as you have the transmitter protected from the weather). I use the Action 2 and the DJI Mic transmitter, so I can start/stop recording no matter where the camera is just by saying "start/stop recording", great for saving editing time when setting up the camera for a drive by as to not have that footage of me running back to the bike!
Was going to comment the same thing. I love my Insta360’s and I have 2 (the One RS and the X2) but recently bought the Osmo action 4 for the exact reason of pairing the DJI mic 2
@@JeremyKroeker there’s a few videos on it!! The DJI mic 2 comes with a transmitter so you can connect it to your phone easily too, but with the osmo action 4 the little mic just bluetooths to it… I’m still working on a way to hook it up in my helmet tho

Thanks for your review. I bought a DJI Action 3 a few months ago and prefer it to my old GoPro. Magnetic mount, long battery life, records within a second, no overheating issues. And I can attach a headset (with clipped earplus) to have a microphone in the helmet via USB-C. Simple, cheap, works great. And now there is the tempting MIC2 transmitter. The possibility to have live comments help my to cut the vids much quicker, that'll save many hours of extra work. Only the distortion in the corners of the DJI picture is annoying, with any angle chosen. With a chin mounted camera your better move really slow, if at all :-) All the best with your Action 4, Günter/Nürnberg
I currently have a Hero 7, bought it new and was reluctant to upgrade it ever since because of the the notorious freeze issues GoPro has never fixed. Was considering the Osmo4, seems to be more stable, also think the magnetic mount is very nice indeed, kind of like comparing the magnetic locking mechanism of a Klim Krios Pro versus a traditional double D. The doubleD is if course safer but once you try the magnetic you never want to go back. Thank you for the review, one of the most comprehensive I have seen.
Same here. GoPro no more, never again. DJI for the win. I have at least 3 Action 4's. Amazing units. If you don't have a pocket 3, it's also amazing, I highly recommend it.
The DJI magnetic mount alone is a huge quality of life improvement. After going through trials and tribulations with my old GoPro, and your previous review, I got the DJI Action 3 and have yet to experience any issue with it. Thanks for the great videos and looking forward to many more!
I am glad you made this video. Have some big trips coming up and was trying to decide what camera to get. The DJI was on the list as well as some other options. It seems the DJI Adventure combo is in my budget range and will do the things I need it to do.
Thanks for the video....feeling frustrated as well with Gopro...I have had my GoPro 12 lock up...but will be moving to DJI in the future....thanks and always enjoy your content...excellent as usual!!!
I bought two Hero 11s last year and had been pretty happy with them, overall. Yesterday, I was out taking video of a guy washing a big motorhome that had been sitting out for the last few years and was really mossed over (middle TN). I had my H11 overheat 3 times - one of the batteries was a bit puffed up, even...like they do when they age out. Anyhow - really disappointed with the overheating. It was in the mid 80's and I was in the sun, filming at 4K/30 which probably gen'd a lot of heat...but still irritating. Managed to get enough footage for a vid, but I'm going to get the DJI soon. I just hate to have multiples. 😞 Thanks for the vids! Good info!
My Gopro hero 7 black just broke. Before it fully failed it always ran hot. As long as there was a battery in it, even when it wasn't on, it kept getting really hot. Thank you for this video!
Just picked up the action 4. My hero 9 was the single most glitching device I've ever owned. I'm really liking it! Having some issues figuring out splitting the mics so viewers can hear my riding buddies. Going to try the boya and two nice new lapel mics maybe. Thanks for this. I really do love the interface and screen on the Osmo.
Good review, thanks. One piece of advice: keep the footage of each camera to one side of the screen throughout the video. Because switching sides makes it confusing sometimes :)
Very good side-by-side comparison. I’ve watched quite a few comparisons and came to the conclusion that the GoPro has better image quality (excluding low light). This surprised me given the larger sensor in the DJI. In every other aspect, the DJI is the better camera. Because of my previous problems with GoPro cameras, the latest being the Hero 9, It was a painful decision, but I went with the GoPro Hero 12 for the reason of video quality. Having used the Hero 12 for a few months now, they seem to have resolved most of the previous issues, the exception being slow battery charging. Its good for us users to have two strong competitors making action cameras and I expect future versions to get better faster.
Sterling,Thank You for the comparison video of the DJI 4 and the GP12. Gonna be traveling coast to coast in the coming months and needed this type of information. Godspeed.
Really enjoyed the side by side testing. I’ve started with GoPro 7 Black never one issue, my GoPro 10 constant freeze ups and issues…. Which makes me question why the heck I bought a GoPro 11. The 11 has been solid… maybe time to move to something new. Thanks for the review
Sterling I showed you my frozen GoPro at the rally last spring. LOL! It got progressively worse so I bought the Insta360 One RS and the Insta360 X3 360 cameras and couldn't be happier. I'm going to get a DJI this summer to play with. Thanks for the great review! 👍👍 Ride SAFE and BE safe!
I recently bought a DJI Action 4 and it seemed great at first. But it has begun turning off after a few minutes, even shooting 1080p 24fps, a problem I never had with the Gopro 7 and 11.
The DJI osmo action 4 and DJI mic 2 setup are pretty slick when it comes to any sort of vlogging. I’m in insta360 fan (and I have 2) but bought the DJi action 4 recently instead of the Insta360 ace pro for simple connectivity of a microphone
Awesome video. Thanks for this useful content. I would love to know more about the chin mount you use. I have tried several chin mounts and they all seem to have trade-off that disappoints me.
That was an excellent review. I already bought an Osmo 4 but being my first action camera any tips are appreciated. I’m a biker too and my first big ride in years on the horizon. Here’s hoping!
Nice video! At 17:22, the clip on the right is labeled "DJI," but also "GP-Log" (which is GoPro's log profile). So, which is which? Also, saying "no audio gain adjustment" at 19:37 is incorrect - on GoPro, you have the Raw Audio setting, and you adjust the gain & processing by choosing Low / Medium / High. Low = minimal processing, High = automatic gain, etc. In all, I'd just point out that ultimately recommending DJI's camera after they sent you a free product and encouraged you to make a comparison video feels... unsurprising 😂 but I trust it's as objective as can be (and I appreciate the full disclosure). Also small note that "GoPro Hereo" is misspelled in the description
I gave up on GoPro. I only had endless issues with the cameras connectivity to their remotes and stupid mic problems. I converted to Insta360 and have never looked back.
@@ttrguy9952 That's a bummer. Thankfully I've never had any issues, but I'm not married to any particular brand. All my GoPros have just served me well
@@BayAreaMotorcycleCommutingI’ve given up on GoPro too. I’ve had GoPro since 7, then 8, 9 and finally 10 with each new model subsequently becoming more and more unreliable. Besides the GoPro overheating and short battery life (even with extreme batteries) what really was the final nail in the coffin was the unreliable audio. If I filmed 10 segments, possibly 7 of those segments wouldn’t have audio. I’ve sent the camera back to GoPro for an exchange unit, but even that has issues with audio - I suspect the media mod is at fault. So to summarise, I gave GoPro a good chance but just cannot cope with their shocking unreliability. I want to be able to go on a tour and not have to worry if the footage/memories of the tour will be ruined.

Another great review. I'd like to see one on editing and how you work your magic. I'm still learning! Would love to see how the master does it! Thanks again!
Action 4 any day. I've had multiple GoPros going back to 5 and everyone has had issues to the point of being unuseable. Never had an issue with the DJI.
Excellent review. not sure why I watched it to the end since I am not in the market for one of these. Having said that it sure sounds like the DJI is the way to go here rsm8
I was in the market for camera to film my riding buddy and last leg section 7 and 8 of the NEBDR. I was looking to go with your recommendation of the DJI but now Insta 360 drops the X4. There’s some cool new features such as hand jester and records through Cardo helmet communication. What would be the chance testing this new version, I know you weren’t a fan of 360 and it being a bit gimmicky but they seem to have addressed some of issues mentions. I would definitely be interested in more video equipment reviews! Thanks again for the terrific insight!
Interesintg. The low light comparison it is giving as a winner Go Pro. I always saw DJI winning, don't understand so much why in this case it is opposite.
My buddies DJI quick record was super fast until having saved some videos to card and now it takes closer to the 2 seconds of that Gopro. Both far better than any of my phone cameras. I was surprised at how good the go-pro night time video looked considering the headlight reflection from the fender glaring into the lens. There was some biased feel in favor of the DJI they sent you such as comparing reliability of the new limited use DJI to 4 generation + old Go-pro's with a lot (more chances for things to malfunction) of use however it was an overall well done video. Such as little things like including the audio record level being shown on screen which is often left out. Thanks for the vid.
thank you, useful and well done. I have a Gopro Hero since a few years. What I find particularly UN-friendly is the lack of feedback when starting or ending the video. How many times I thought I pushed the damn little button and didn't instead? or viceversa I thought to turn it off ad ended up recording uninteresting stuff? The menu also took me a while to figure out. I did not have any freezing however, which I understand many have experienced.
Thanks Sterling that was very helpful in that it you confirmed what I already suspected. I cant wait to see what your thoughts are on the insta 360. That seems to be the common direction moto vloggers are going...no? :)
Not for me The resolution isn't there yet and I don't like having to reframe my shots later in post. i prefer a straight up 4k action camera but I can see how people like the 360, its fun!
Good video and compared. I am wrong? But the footage of the Go Pro looks much better? clearer not washed out better colors? Hoped the DJI could be a goog alternative
hi Sterling - thanks for the great review! one element i did not see treated was the memory. i saw battery life at roughly 160 minutes...so i am thinking that one battery lasts for two and a half hours, but i did not see what that translated into with respect to the memory capacity. can you speak to that? Also, looking forward to stopping by your motel in Brisbee on my way to the 2024 BMW MOA Rally in Oregon (coming in from central Texas).
I was recording in 4 K in 80-degree weather yesterday, and my Hero 11 overheated (again.) I had the media mod on so I could use the mm microphone, and I guess that probably held in the heat, but that's still ridiculous. I'm in middle Tennessee, and mid-90s are common. I'm going to check into the DJI; I've got 2 Hero 11s and tons of accessories. (I hope most of the accessories work with the DJI.) It also seems that GoPro batteries last a max of 2 years and swell up when they go bad...and can wedge into the camera. 😞
Thank you for the detailed VS video. I have a question - can my family live stream as I am on the go? If im on the bike can they see my trip live from home? Thank you
That was very good. The quality of the two is extraordinary and they are quite close. The magnetic attachment and reliability of the DJI is a step change. Not sure what DJI is like to deal with for cameras but can tell you from recent experience that GP has lost the plot
We have a couple GoPro models and it is tiresome when the GoPro isn’t working and we have to stop to pull the battery and reset the camera. Thinking about the DJI or the new Insta360. Thank you for your insights!
Thanks for the video. I've been wanting to upgrade my hero 8 due to constant issues. GoPro seems the best as far as image quality goes but their firmware seems to be pretty garbage. I hate that "remove the replace the battery" is the go-to fix-all. Sure GoPro, that helps when I get in a motorcycle accident and it wasn't recorded because your crap camera decided that the battery I fully charged overnight now only has 1% and as such the camera records for 3.5 seconds and dies. So sick of GoPro
Just ordered the DJI Osmo Action 4 Adventure pack. I see you use RAM ball mounts, do you recommend these or something else? I am going to need a fairly quick mount as I will be putting on a rented bike. Doing the Swiss Alps in June for two weeks. What do you recommend.
Does the DJI still have voicecommand for recording video? My DJI 1 camera has this feature and i find it usefull when I am driving and give a voice command to start or stop recording.
Hi thanks for the Video, what about the dji internal mic? I feel that it's too noisy even with the wind sound reduction. do you have any suggestion for this?
i've always bought DJI products and then the one time i bought a gopro12 i've regretted it massively ever since, i get overheating and crashes constantly. I wish i could go back in time and buy the osmo 4
Thank you for the review. I have one question about the Action 4 camera. Does it have a "driving" mode where you can plug a cord into the cigarette lighter and attach it to the camera so that it turns on when the motorcycle starts and off when the ignition is turned off (and additionally keep the battery charged?) If I am riding for more than 4 hours, I would prefer not to have to physically swap out the batteries. You already answered my other question about the stability of the magnetic mount on the motorcycle. I was concerned that the mount would not be sturdy enough to keep the camera from detaching while riding. It seems that it does, indeed, stay put. If anyone can help, I would appreciate an answer. Thank you.
Looking at your Amazon link, and preparing to order this adventure kit, should I order the added package with the transmitter, plus a couple extra items? Brand new to the action camera game but put a lot of trust in your opinion. Ha!
Please tell me how ND filters cause blur as opposed to just speeding up shutter speed yielding slow motion 😮? I watched your video for a looking time learning a lot!😊
I noticed an error in the side by side riding through the village at dusk footages (2 of them). In the first scene the buildings passing on the left were clear on the DJI, with the gopro buildings were blurry and it seemed image stabilisation was off. even though 'rocksteady' was reported on the screen In the second footage, which seemed to be the identical footage, demonstrating low-light conditions, the camera names were swapped around. Oops.
My biggest problem with moving away from Gopro (11s in my case) is that the other cameras have complete garbage audio, even with whatever audio adapter they have available. Action 4, Insta360, etc. None can give consistent helmet audio it seems.
I swapped from the hero11 to the action 4, The audio was the only real downfall at first but once I got the setups right, it was way nicer. Gopro processes the audio more & the Dji is more like an audio recorder (to make it simple). Now I use the Dji Mic 2 with the action 4 so I can use it for my helmet & everything else while riding. I did have the best luck with the Action 4 with a Saramonic 2003 USB to trs adapter, then the Sennheiser ME2 lav mic for wired audio. Now that I have my setup with the Action 4 dialed in, I could never go back.
@Atopper so you're running a mic, to a seperate recorder, and then downloading and syncing your audio separately? That sounds like a total nightmare. I have my lav mic mounted in my helmet, I run it to the gopro. Audio recorded to the video files. Done.
The audio for the Dji is recorded right to the video too. I was trying to say that you have less of a processed audio, which gives you more control to adjust in post if you want to. Plus the Dji mic 2 will internally recorded audio at -6db lower for safety. Also if you do want to sync the audio (like an external recorder), it is very easy when you have the correct setting.
I have the DJI OA4 - love it! What I’m having issues with, is to capture my voice with the helmet mounted mic. I tried the DJI Mic 2, wirelessly connected to the OA4, didn’t really get me good results. Hard wired? Could you share your helmet mounted mic setup, Sterling?

Another great review. I'd like to see one on editing and how you work your magic. I'm still learning! Would love to see how the master does it! Thanks again!
Thanks for a great detailed comparison video Sterling, thanks for sharing, I’m convinced now! 👍👍
Action 4 any day. I've had multiple GoPros going back to 5 and everyone has had issues to the point of being unuseable. Never had an issue with the DJI.
Really great video mate. You hit every nail right on the head. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Excellent review!
I'm ditching most of my GoPros.
Excellent review. not sure why I watched it to the end since I am not in the market for one of these.
Having said that it sure sounds like the DJI is the way to go here
rsm8
love the DJI Osmo Action 4 as always.
Great content, Sterling!
Great video. Love the review..👍🏽🧨
Thx for sharing. From central Canada
Nice video Thanks !! Good information
(I hope most of the accessories work with the DJI.)
It also seems that GoPro batteries last a max of 2 years and swell up when they go bad...and can wedge into the camera. 😞
Thank you for the detailed VS video.
I have a question - can my family live stream as I am on the go? If im on the bike can they see my trip live from home?
Thank you
the wide lens, horizon locked on GoPro max lens 2.0 is... sorta nice ... only linear lens in dji (horizon lock) ..
thx for this review. :) I choose dji a4 :)
I have 2 GoPro and heating up freezing all time I recently bought mini se2 and 4 pro mini drones I’m going to switch up and DJI action next
Thanks Sterling for the wealth Of information.
That was very good. The quality of the two is extraordinary and they are quite close. The magnetic attachment and reliability of the DJI is a step change. Not sure what DJI is like to deal with for cameras but can tell you from recent experience that GP has lost the plot
It does look like the GoPro handles direct sunlight a little better. A bit more flare with the dji. Very minor quibble, really.
I like the 4k 16:9, what would be your go to other settings on the bike please ???? Thanks
Very helpful. Thanks
I'd be interested in a DJI vs Insta360 comparison
I’d be interested to know if you have had the chance to explore the Insta360 Ace Pro camera as well
Best motorcycle action cam is ... 360 cam. Doesn't matter Gopro MAX or Insta360. - Best Regards!
Yes, you really need to use an external microphone.
i've always bought DJI products and then the one time i bought a gopro12 i've regretted it massively ever since, i get overheating and crashes constantly. I wish i could go back in time and buy the osmo 4
amazing review
Thank you.
It does not have that power on-off feature that I am aware of. Plug into power on the bike and keep it charged.
Looking at your Amazon link, and preparing to order this adventure kit, should I order the added package with the transmitter, plus a couple extra items? Brand new to the action camera game but put a lot of trust in your opinion. Ha!
Wireless mic is nice yo have!
Please tell me how ND filters cause blur as opposed to just speeding up shutter speed yielding slow motion 😮? I watched your video for a looking time learning a lot!😊
go pro for me, has night stabilization is better, can mount it on my camera tripods now. has bluetooth built in for helmet.
Oops.
hello, I just had the camera action 4
can you give me the right setting to film on motorcycle
thanks
thank you so much
Thank you!
GoPro has been driving me nuts lately, DJI is on my radar after too many mishaps with GoPro.
Where have you been.
Long time no see.
I still love my GoPro 12 with the Max Lens 2.0 superview - I am not changing - NEVER
great vid ty
I have the DJI OA4 - love it! What I’m having issues with, is to capture my voice with the helmet mounted mic. I tried the DJI Mic 2, wirelessly connected to the OA4, didn’t really get me good results. Hard wired?
Could you share your helmet mounted mic setup, Sterling?
