Keith Melton, the President of CaneMasters and a Senior Master of the Cane (ACSD) provides answers to the commonly asked questions about safe travel with a self-defense cane. Is it legal? What are your federal rights to carry a cane? Can you take your cane on board the aircraft? Can you travel with multiple canes? Al these questions are answered and more! - Спорт
Being 62 and gray hair does help me look legit even though I don't actually need my cane for mobility, yet.
Anybody can use a cane Craig!
I traveled with a cane from Florida to L A , tsa was real kind I had to put the cane on the x ray and they offered me one they had until it was all done .
I feel very comfortable flying with one .
Wonderful Rusty. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Fantastic information and presentation! I will be sure to share this with my students and viewers. Thank you
Thank you! Keith
Since I'm of Irish heritage, the beauty of Black Thorn has been drilled into my head since I was knee high to something, for me there is no better, for me that is!
@Chris Penfield Hi Chris, you probably will keep waiting, as they promote their own product, but your Granda was right, nothing better than a Shillelagh made of blackthorne my friend, cheers!
@Chris Penfield :)
A cane should never look like a weapon. When it does, half the advantage of carrying it has been lost.
Great point...that is why our canes are mobile devices and not weapons. Thanks Hugh
thank you, I travelled to Ireland back in 2005 with mine and had no problems.
Good news! Keith
Well I never! I didn't ever think I would need to look up RUclips videos about cane use, but I do, and have watched two of your videos, so far. Great advice, and I will go and check out your webpage, now.
I'm new to this idea of carrying a cane for self defense. It's really interesting. I don't really need a cane at the moment, but it would be nice to have one on vacation. My legs tend to get tired quickly, and having a little help with balance would be nice when I carry a heavy backpack.
I flew a couple times with a folding metal cane with no problem in my carry-on. I didn't need it for walking at that time, but I keep with me in case my hips and sciatica flare up. I especially need help with a cane going up stairs. Worse part is taking off my shoes because even with Velcro these days, it's very hard to get them secured with my mobility issues.
I am legally blind. I have traveled with my long white, mobility cane or my shorter white support cane for decades. I have flown with both. I didn’t experience any difficulties in airports or in planes. I have used them as defensive weapons when I was attacked. A cane is a good tool to have in your hand.
We are glad you are safe and your can helped you protect yourself. Thanks for sharing Robert.
I am legally blind as well, I have a regular walking cane and a white cane, I get alot of strange looks but no one has tried to take either cane...but you never know if/when someone will try to.
@@tx.tactical3165 In December, I am traveling via AMTRAK to Oklahoma & Arkansas to visit my daughter and other friends. I am looking forward to it
Keith, Very good discussion. Thank you very much
Thank you Thomas… We always appreciate you being a friend of Canemasters!
Great information and advice. Thank you.
Thank you a Gary….
Well done!! Thx..
Thanks for watching!
Outstanding!
Thank you Wes.... Keith
Just purchased the tactical street cane and subbed! Great content 🙏🏿🇺🇸
Awesome James! We look forward to you getting it.
thanks for this information as I will be traveling soon...
You are very much welcome!
I take advantage of the wheel chair service offered by airlines. I’ve never had an issue with my cane, which is a necessity.
That's great to hear! We're glad to know that your cane has been serving you well during your travels. If you ever need any assistance or have any questions about our products, feel free to reach out. Safe travels!
Thank you. I am subscribed.
Thank you!
Congratulations
Thanks!
Many thanks Sir.
Great advice and great content. I also learnt a lot from you today. I was carrying one of canes with the horn backwards for quite a awhile. Not realising that the horn should be in front. Hence I have kind of discarded that particular cane because I found it uncomfortable the way I was carrying it. Thanks for the proper knowledge.
You are very much welcome! Thanks for watching our video also. You can email us at info@canemasters.com if you need anything else.
Another good video...thanks 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you! Keith
Had no issue climbing on a plane at all TSA unconcerned, did go through scanner of course. One flight attendant wanted it to stow in cabinet - no issue I sitting down. But jiggling and rubbing against something the finish got damaged a wee bit.
Would you recommend protecting a wood cane by: Use linseed or Tung oil to create a beautiful and protective hand-rubbed finish.
Seal the wood with a coating of polyurethane, varnish, or lacquer.
Finish and waterproof wood simultaneously with a stain-sealant combo.
Hi Peter! If you wanted to preserve the natural beauty of the wood of your cane, we highly suggest the tung oil finish. If you're looking to match your cane to your personal style or to make it stand out in a crowd with class, you can go with a stain. You can email us at info@canemasters.com if you need anything.
Great post. I have herniated disc and have a cane for a while. I travel by train in my country (in Europe)
Bringing a collapsible one has really been helpful plus my doctor's note. In Europe the first train compartment coming in has more space and only three seats so someone with a wheelchair, a pregnant person or a person with a cane can sit comfortably.
I was wondering about plane travel (I'm not flying)... Good informations!
Thanks for making this video. I didn't know about how to hold the cane correctly!
Thanks for sharing! Yes, you can also carry a cane on a plane. However, it still depends on the airline and country. For US laws, if you have our mobility card, you can carry a cane anywhere with no question. You can email us at info@canemasters.com if you need anything.
Regarding the TSA baggage check process, note that TSA always has a substitute cane for you to use temporarily during the scanning procedure.
Thank you for your comment! We appreciate your concern regarding the TSA baggage check process. Rest assured, our team is aware of TSA procedures and ensures that travelers can navigate the scanning process smoothly. If any issues arise, TSA always provides substitute canes for temporary use, prioritizing the safety and convenience of all passengers.
Appreciate the information. The plastic card is great and will probably work wonders in most cases but ultimately I’m not sure the HIPAA information you provided would stand up under deep scrutiny. As an example an experience with covid masks and stores asking people if they had a medical condition preventing them from wearing a mask. There are lots of folks who don’t have to abide by HIPAA laws such as private airlines. The following is cut and pasted from a government website as to who they say have to follow HIPAA: “who must Follow These Laws. We call the entities that must follow the HIPAA regulations "covered entities." Covered entities include: Health Plans, including health insurance companies, HMOs, company health plans, and certain government programs that pay for health care, such as Medicare and Medicaid”.
Thanks Micah for the info. So far TSA and the airlines are respecting disabilities and HIPA. They fortunately appear to treat it differently than masks.
HIPAA is somewhat irrelevant in this situation. It is directed at ensuring that entities that receive personal medical information maintain its confidentiality.
Airlines are required to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, so must ensure that customers are accommodated appropriately- including by allowing the use of appropriate mobility devices.
I carry a cane to travel and have had similar experiences. The main difference is that TSA loaned me one of their canes while I went through the metal detector/body scanner. My cane was scanned separately by a device different from the carry on luggage x-ray machine. I don't know why but maybe for chemical/explosive materials?
TSA is often overworked these days… possibly the reason. Keith
👍
Thanks Mark!
Thanks for the great information. I wonder if you have experience traveling with the Robaina Raven? I own several Cane Masters canes and I've been interested in the Raven for a while but I've been reluctant to purchase it because I need my cane for mobility and I don't want to risk it being confiscated or disallowed by security.
I have two of the Robaina Ravens and have traveled with them without problems. They meet all of the TSA guidelines.... great canes! Keith
I wasn't aware a cane would fit in an overhead compartment.
- What's the maximum cane length that will allow storage in the overhead?
- Are the measurements for overhead compartments standardized throughout all airlines?
Love my two Cane Masters, BTW!
I believe you can lay it on the floor or tuck it beside your seat if able.
Every airline is different! Thanks for reaching out.
Mr. Melton , a couple of days back watched a video by a fellow called himself Master something . The entire video was making fun of old people like me who are now not usually going to be able to go 10 rounds with a young , well trained martial artist . I could not figure out if this Nimrod was trying to just be funny or if he was indeed serious. Anyway ithas been my experience that if one actually puts his , or her time familiarizing and training with their weapon, whether it be a hand gun , rifle or a well made cane , that person will normally prevail . In the words of Duc son song . My Grand Master , practice , practice , practice.
Hi there! Having a walking cane for personal protection is not about age. It's about having proper knowledge and skills in using it since it can help you go a long way. Especially, now a days, safety is always at risk. Having a consistent practice also is very important since it enhances muscle memory.
Let me ask you. I own a good straight ball type. Not a ball but contoured for your hand. I’m told that if I protect myself in California New York and Massachusetts in in trouble because they classify it as a bludgeoning weapon. I can really walk better in open spaces with that but now in afraid to use it. Is that correct.
Hi there! We don't offer ball type handle. However, as long as you have our mobility card, you can carry a cane anywhere without question (within US laws). You can email us at info@canemasters.com if you need anything.
You said you would link to the disability/mobility card?
How do you find Find a place to take self defense classes with a king I live in Southern California Riverside County can you please give me some information thank you
Hi Edward! We only offer online training here americancaneselfdefense.com/product-category/cane-self-defense-dvd-training/. You can email us at info@canemasters.com if you need anything.
I contacted your company looking to buy a cane. I have mobility issues so I requested a call from your company. I asked how much is a cane for mobility and would double as self defense. I was told 160 dollars as it should be hickory. Then I was told to buy a 12 dollar card to show. That is ridiculous expense for a disabled adult on social security.
Hi Mitchell, thanks for reaching out! We highly recommend Hickory wood type for both mobility and personal protection purposes since it is hard and strong. If the price is your concern, we do have here THE SAND HARBOR WALKING CANE which is $130. You can email us at info@canemasters.com for further options.
When you grow out your long grey beard, no one looks twice at your cane 😁
Thanks for reaching out!
Boarding early with a cane will get you moved OUT of an Exit Row Seat on some flights. Depends on the Flight Attendant. And, you may not want to wear your Cane Masters Shirt while traveling.
Hi Thomas! As long as you have our mobility card, you can carry your cane anywhere without question (within US laws). You can email us at info@canemasters.com if you need anything else.
hi trying to contact you guys but the website seems down?
Bond the website should be back up!
How bout going overseas can I bring it with me?
Yes, you can. We also sell Mobility Card that includes the 3 Federal laws that protect your rights to carry a cane without question. For more details of that card, click this link: canemasters.com/collections/apparel-and-accessories/products/new-mobility-card-plus
How do I get a mobility card?
You can go to canemasters.com or give us a call at 800-422-2263
You can order at canemasters.com
I am only 57, but can pull down the front of my shirt and show a 3x heart bypass scare. Not sure tsa wants that argument. 😂
As far as TSA and most travel services are concerned, a cane is a medical device and presents no problem. Of course, that means you carry and use it as a mobility aid, not as a weapon. Use common sense, don't look dangerous.
Key words here are 'USA' and 'domestic'
Hi there! If you have our mobility card, you can carry a cane anywhere with no questions (within US laws).
my ego is too big to carry a cane atm, but would be great in a knife fight
Hi there! Yes, canes are great tool also for personal protection. You can email us at info@canemasters.com if you need anything.
Since our government has made it illegal to defend yourself, getting an ordinary-looking cane is probably the best bet. And with my knees, I need a cane anyway.
It's understandable that concerns about personal safety may lead to exploring legal options for self-defense. A cane can indeed serve a dual purpose of assisting with mobility and providing a means of protection within the bounds of the law. It's essential to prioritize legal and non-lethal methods for self-defense. If you're considering this route, you might also want to look into self-defense classes or techniques that can enhance your ability to protect yourself while staying within legal boundaries. Feel free to reach out to us if you need any further assistance.
@@CaneMasters-WalkingCanes Yes, that's about all one can do. Anyway, I plan to call next week to get my first cane.
Hi there, you can book a cane consultation here as well: canemasters.com/pages/cane-consultation
@@CaneMasters-WalkingCanes I already beat you to it, my friend. I had my consultation this week and purchased my first cane.
Yahshua - you know Him as Jesus - was born to a virgin, turned water to wine, taught, healed the sick, raised the dead, casted out demons, walked on water, calmed the storm, and fed a crowd of thousands with a few fish and a few loaves of bread, among many other things. He was killed on the cross as payment for the sins of all mankind, three days later He rose from the dead. Forty days later He ascended into heaven where He sits at the right hand of the Father. He is returning very soon, but before He does, Satan, the devil, is coming to pretend to be Jesus/God (2 Thessalonians 2:1-4). Satan is an angel, and he will have certain supernatural powers with which to try to fool everyone. He will, for example, be able to make fire come down from heaven in the sight of men. He will only be on earth a short time before the real King of Kings, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, returns. When the real Jesus comes we will all be transformed into our spiritual bodies at the same moment. Jesus came in the flesh to offer forgiveness of sins and eternal life to anyone who believes and calls on His precious name!
if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. - Romans 10:9
Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, There came unto him a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment, and poured it on his head, as he sat at meat. But when his disciples saw it, they had indignation, saying, To what purpose is this waste? For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor. When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me. For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body, she did it for my burial. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world, there shall also this, that this woman hath done, be told for a memorial of her. - Matthew 26:6-13
Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
To anoint your self, the sick, or a building for spiritual protection:
Get a small bottle of olive oil and pour off a small amount into a smaller vessel like a vial or baby food jar. Use the rest of the bottle for cooking. Ask the Lord to bless your vial of oil in Jesus name. Anoint yourself with the oil by placing a dab of oil on tip of finger and touch it to your forehead, and ask the Lord to bless you/heal you. To anoint your home or other building: place a dab of oil on your finger and anoint the door posts and order all negativity and evil out of the house, and order that nothing negative or evil can enter into your home including piggybacking on a person entering, order it to be so in the name of Jesus. Anoint all potential entrances to your home. To anoint the sick: place oil on tip of finger and touch it to the head of the sick and say a prayer of healing over them in Jesus name. See James Chapter 5:14-15.
