Really interesting, Claire. I knew some of these facts, like her birthplace, the haste of the betrothal and marriage, her death and burial, and that she'd served both Katherine and Anne. But I didn't know about her Catholicism, her words about the Pilgrimage of Grace, or some of the other details that really help illuminate her personality. Chapuys seems to have been honest and truthfull man, even though he didn't like Anne at all. It would have been so easy for him to say something bad about Anne, and even easier not to say anything at all, but he desided to be fair, even towards the woman he disliked so much. And I do think that he started to see the pattern in Henry's behaviour at this point: how easily he discarded his wives and children without any good reason.

@@Shane-Flanagan Adultery wasn't punished by burning at the stake. Only 2 crimes carried the death penalty in this era- heresy, for which you were burned, & treason, for which women were burned & men were hanged, drawn & quartered (unless noble, ofc.) Sins like adultery were confessed to a priest, & you were given a penance, like say 10 Hail Marys & fast on bread & water. The priests consulted penitentials for the correct penance for every sin, & yeah... the church had an astonishingly comprehensive list of EVERY sin you could think of, & many you wouldn't :D

Hello Darlene 👋 . Totally agree with you. Of course, he already had Jane Seymour 'waiting in the wings' (hence his haste) as Anne had not provided a son, and he was keen to get rid of her quickly and 'move on'. What a 'nasty piece of work' Henry had become! ...
Whilst we know that the charges against Anne were 'trumped-up' charges (she was innocent, as were the men), Henry could have persuaded Anne (with threats) to agree to an annulment, or anything else, but he didn't even bother. He Murdered an innocent woman (and the others) not for treason, but to quickly 'move on'. ...
Also, to not even have a coffin waiting for her body, it must have been thought (by some) that the King wouldn't go through with Anne's execution, and instead pardon her at the last minute, but he didn't. ...
How very sad for ALL of the Boleyn family and for the families of the other men executed with her. They were all innocent. Even though Tudor times, I'm sure that many were horrified at this 'single act' of mis-justice and cruelty (not to mention all the other times). ...
Great idea of Claire's to make these FACTS videos, isn't it? Keep enjoying (like I do). I often read your comment. Just thought today that I would respond. Hope you don't mind! .. Enjoy your day. Bye from Lyndell 🙂👋

If there is life after death, and justice in that life, then I hope Henry was brought to account :(

@@denisehill7769 Agreed Denise, but we'll never know (if he was brought to account). Such dreadful times. Although, I really do believe that if given half a chance (although 'strong willed' but knowing what may await not only herself but her brother) that given no way out, if offerred, Anne would have 'reluctantly' stepped aside for Jane Seymour. Anne would not have liked it, but she loved her family more than being Queen (I'm sure) and I truly believe that she loved Henry (God knows why). Sadly, she, her brother, nor the others had a chance. I ALSO had wondered, if Henry and Cromwell 'got rid of her' permanently because they 'knew too much' about him and his deeds to be allowed to live. No 'rhyme nor reason' otherwise for them all to die (by any means). Just my thoughts. Bye Denise 👋

You would get on very well with my husband. He is a Military Historian (has co-produced some military books) and an amateur family historian. He has helped many Australian families find out details of their loved ones' military service throughout all wars (where there are records) mainly due to his contacts in the army (from his army days) and his understanding of military jargon etc., BUT more significantly for our family, assisting an uncle (now deceased) to produce a detailed family tree and book (covering every branch of the family) tracing them back to the reign of Elizabeth I. ...
He even visited (in 2016) in Wales the original old manor house that was built by the Prewetts in 1601. It has been modernised (of course) but only on the inside, and added to. He was invited into the house by the present owners and shown original documentation found by them of drawings of the house (architecture etc.). He had only ever seen this 'Prewett' house in a black and white drawing before, and it is now on the front of a the Family Tree Book, privately published by my husband and his late uncle. They printed off enough copies to go to the eldest of all his cousins etc. My husband now the Patriarch of the Prewetts of our branch of the family in Australia. So I do understand what you do. A lot of work and research goes into it all. ...
Although, ours was just our family, he has found out much more, and helped many. During his 2016 trip he met many relatives he'd never known. Quite an adventure for him. No more travel now though, as he is too old. ...

I guess when I said tireless, I meant that I find Anne endlessly fascinating. Never tire of hearing her story. She first caught my attention 12 years ago in 2009 during my final year of primary school, not sure what you call that in Australia. Funnily enough, 2009 is the same year that Claire started The Anne Boleyn Files. I hadn't really heard about Anne previous but I was drawn to her for some reason and just felt I had to know more. For my final year of secondary school nearly 7 years ago in 2014, I did a history project about Anne Boleyn for my final set of exams. I listed The Anne Boleyn Files actually as one of my references. Loved doing that project as we didn't get much of a chance to learn about the Tudors in secondary school, mainly WW2 etc. It felt like my little tribute to Anne. I've watched countless documentaries and viewed many youtube videos on Henry and his wives. Presenters included Dr Susannah Lipscomb, Dan Snow, Lucy Worsely, David Starkey and Dr Kat etc. I own a few books about the Tudors and borrowed many from the library. I loved the Alison Weir factual book 'The Lady in the Tower'' which is about Anne's downfall.

I'm finding it hard to find the right words, so please forgive me as I don't wish to embarrass you. You seem a lovely young man! ...
I won't tell you my age (a lady never tells) but I will say my husband is about 74 and we've been married over 40 years (a lifetime, and he hasn't got sick of me yet). Correction: he often says "it is better the devil you know than the one you don't" or "it is cheaper to keep you than get rid of you"! These are OLD jokes. You might find them dreadful, but we 'get along' just fine. He is a very good man. A 'Gentleman' and a 'Gentle Man' just like his late father before him. I got on with my father-in-law very well. ...
ANYWAY, you have been studying Anne Boleyn and known of Claire's wonderful work for much longer than I have. I've only known of it for under a year, but have always loved history, especially British history. I am not computer savvy. I do Not have a Computer or a Smartphone. Only a computer Tablet which my husband got for me late April/May (I think) in 2020. Then had to teach me how to use it. On finding Claire's channel, I fell in love with it but struggled with some things. Was able to contact Claire and Tim directly, and until I improved my skills, they both helped me considerably. I have learnt a lot (tech wise) with their help and guidance, and my husband's help. Also get to enjoy more and more of Claire's work. ..
So, I'm slowly going through her playlists, whilst also watching her regular videos as they come through (via subscription) and have bought most of her books as well. I can't 'get around' as I once could, so my interest in Claire's work keeps me out of mischief (or at least 'out of my husband's hair). He is not only my long suffering husband, but my carer. Love him to bits ❤ Poor man! LOL ❗🙄🙃😊 ...
Anyway. I've bored you enough for today (I'm sure). By the way, if you haven't already noticed - I'm a Chatterbox, leaving long messages and comments. No, it's a myth and comes from the work of Nicholas Sander, a Catholic in exile during Elizabeth's reign, 50 years after Anne died. He was trying to blacken Elizabeth by blackening Anne. Here's a link to my video on this very topic - ruclips.net/video/bNb473eMt8U/видео.html

Many thanks for yet another illuminating video, Claire. I've wondered from time to time how History might have been *radically* altered had Anne Boleyn been allowed to marry Henry Percy. Perhaps Northumberland might have become a centre for French-influenced culture, graced by a dynamic daughter named Elizabeth....

Why hasn't anyone thought about officially clearing Anne's reputation? She was obviously innocent. Henry had been making enquiries as to the ability of the Seymour women to bear sons before the scandal that propelled Anne's fall erupted at court. He was courting Jane Seymour during Anne's last pregnancy. He got engaged to Jane the day after Anne's execution. It's obvious that the charges were all engineered by the King and those who wanted to please him.

@@lhzook The old decaying Church that Anne was buried in was restored in the 1800's by Queen Victoria along with other parts of the Tower. A few bodies beneath the alter were exhumed from shallow graves including Anne's. Each body was examined to confirm who it was then reburied in new coffins with the name of it's occupant and year of reinternment placed on the outside. They were then reburied properly and given a memorial tile depicting their name, title and coat of arms on the alter floor to mark where they lay in peace.

Anne wasn't short of suitor. She must have been an atractive lady, not only by the look, buy charming, witty, clever. Henry VIII seemed to like clever ladies, Catherine of Aragon was well educated, so was Anne and Cathrine Parr. Anne was created the Marquise of Pembroke. How exactly did it change her status? She was from titled family, I know marquise is higher then earl, but if her father for heir to earloom, did her social standing changed dramatically since then?

    • @anneboleynfiles
      @anneboleynfiles  3 года назад +7

Her father had titles, but this was a title in her own right, rather than just being the daughter of an earl or the wife of one. Before, she was just Lady Anne Boleyn, now she was Marquess, a member of the peerage herself. It was to make her a suitable consort for the trip to Calais. It also made her incredibly wealthy in her own right.

Can you do a video on your thoughts on Henry’s intentions for executing Anne. Do you think he really was full of hate or did he simply want to get rid of her?? How could he hate her so much that he wanted her dead. People can hate those they used to love but not want them to die. That seems too brutal.

That's what is so good about Claire's channel, she separates the facts from the fiction in an entertaining way and dispels many myths that were made up over the years in books, films and TV series.
