Thank you so much for a fair recitation of Mary I reign. So many diminish her because of the length if her father & sister's tenure on the throne, but Mary I was a trailblazer( the first successful Queen Regnant of England) & in her brief reign did do a lot for her country & gave her sister an England in better shape than she had inherited.
Mary was the only Tudor monarch to oppose the practice of enclosure whereby the common fields of the peasants were “enclosed” to turn them into sheep pastures and the tenants evicted.
I suspect Tim has locked them in the room and stands out of range of the camera chasing them into view--we already knows he's ready to bounce from the ropes attached to the church bells on Claire's command! In all seriousness, I too appreciate the fur cameos.
Another FABULOUS video, Claire!! Mary certainly was a VERY INTERESTING person, wasn't she??!! Is it true that the person who threatened to bash her head in was the 3rd Duke of Norfolk, or is this just a myth??!! Take care, and stay safe everyone!! XXXX Ps SOOOOOO nice to see Maj in the background!!
Thanks so much Claire ☺️ Claire gave a very fair Facts About video here and stayed away from the usual negative stereotyping of Mary which was pleasing and refreshing. I knew the majority of these facts. Regardless, I'm always happy to hear about Mary who I have a soft spot and nothing but sympathy for. I always knew Mary did some good in her reign and it wasn't completely negative. Mary paved the way for women to rule in England. I chuckled at Claire's glee when sneaking in another fact at the end. BTW, so good to see Maj make an appearance 😍
Mary's reign has been overlooked by most historians. However, it is clear that Elizabeth I learned a lot from her sister's short tenure, from the power of the 'wife/mother of kingdom' rhetoric to mistakes to avoid.
Poor Mary. She did a lot that was very cruel, but she really thought she was doing the right thing. Elizabeth I was a great Queen in many ways, but what was done to Mary as a child & young woman robbed her of her health & youth possibly keeping her from producing the needed male heir, which led to Elizabeth being the next Queen. What kind of Queen could Mary have been if she had been treated better & allowed to marry at a younger age.
It would be interesting if they did a film about Mary I's fight for the throne from her point of view. It is clear that virtually everyone underestimated her!!
Mary I was absolutely faithful to her personal beliefs. I might question her interpretation sometimes, though I admire her dedication. If she hadn't been so determined to impose her opinions onto everyone else she might have been a strong monarch.
I've always hated how Mary I was treated by her fathers obsession for a son. She could've married younger, had a children. She killed less than her sister Elizabeth killed. Got that from their father.
Great video again and I'm glad to hear the positives about Mary I instead of all the negatives. She was greatly misunderstood and given different circumstances, would have been a great queen.
Thank you so much for this video! I love learning about Mary. I feel bad for her and all the stress that she went through! But she was a fighter! Was the person who threatened to bash her head like a soft egg still alive when she became queen? If so did they flee the country?
I believe that it was the Duke of Norfolk who threatened Mary. He had a dreadful record of wife abuse, so picking on Mary was doubtless right up his alley....
@@Shane-Flanagan You certainly can "see how much she loves what she does". Claire is "a real trooper" too! Meaning she works so hard to get everything 'out' for us, not to forget her huge work load for the Tudor Society etc etc. Claire would have to 'love it' or she'd go mad. Although she does admit to being a "Tudor Nut" - Thank goodness! 👍
Entirely too much cousin marriage back then. Philip II married his first cousin, his first cousin, once-removed, and his first cousin, once-removed (who was also his niece). 3/4 marriages were to close relatives.
We have marriages in our village right now of first cousins but then that's what happens when there's Civil War and villages are cut off or don't trust outsiders.
We always joke about how our family tree is more of a tangled vine. The royals did it because they didn't want to dilute the royal blood, but when only half a dozen families are involved there can be ... issues....
Why Henry VIII didn’t marry Mary off ? He already declared her bastard and could give her to some English aristocrat, loyal to him. It happened before , royal women marrying non-royal men. As bastard she was “ less valuable “. Legitimate grandson would be very valuable to king, though.
I believe she was less desirable because her position was so much in question. Many men didn't want to deal with the uncertainty, whatever the potential rewards.
@@wendychavez5348 I understand , but she still was king’s daughter . She was expected to marry royal man, Prince or King. Marrying “only” aristocrat wasn’t the best option for her, but she was still attractive bride for them. Her royal daddy could simply command someone to marry his daughter.
I wonder what would have happened if either Mary or Catherine accepted that the marriage was not legitimate and the new religious movement.. do you think that they would still get to see each other? My guess is probably not if only one of them was "cooperative"
I recently heard that Mary I was a little bit daft when it came to her schooling, that she did not pick up the material quickly like Elizabeth did. Do you know if that is true? If possible, I would love to see a video exploring this topic if you're interested in making one. Thanks so much for your wonderful work.

Was Phillip still King Consort or have rights once Elizabeth came to the throne since he was married to Queen Mary?
No but he wanted to retain them by marrying elizabeth herself.
