    I think the most and surprising was Jane Boleyn's wardrobe still showing her in mourning for her husband. I knew that their marriage probably wasn't nearly as horrible as shown in fictional portrayals, but this fact certainly makes it look as if there was love between them.

    George Boleyn's poetry can't be found.
    A loss to culture, I'll be bound.
    His sister Anne would be in shock!
    Perhaps it's under tree or rock.
    To seek it out would be a hassle,
    But why not start at Hever Castle?
    It is the Boleyn's wondrous home.
    Not far from there would his verse roam!

    I think Jane’s wardrobe being all black is quite telling about her relationship with the Boleyns and specifically, her husband. Black was of course a status symbol, but even monarchs had other colors in their wardrobes! Her being in eternal mourning would certainly be VERY different from her portrayals in fiction as a spiteful woman who hated her husband. I do wonder why she’s portrayed as such when there’s no evidence that she assisted in the downfall of Anne and George, and since she was apparently close enough to Anne that the latter would share details as intimate as her bedroom life.

    I didn't think there would've been enough info about George to write a book. Well done Claire! George always seemed to be a shadowy figure like his mother and sister Mary. Overshadowed by Anne no doubt.
    Surprised Claire could list 11 facts and that I only confidently knew 3 of them! So embarrassing considering I thought I knew so much.
    I was always of the belief that George's marriage to Jane was an unhappy one and that George was a bad man. That is how he is mainly portrayed onscreen. Cool fact that Jane wore only black after her husband's execution.
    Never knew George contracted the sweating sickness. Shouldn't be too surprising considering how contagious it was but we only think of Anne and Carey contracting it.
    It goes to show how truly caring Anne and George. While awaiting death, instead of thinking of themselves, they were worried about others. George worried about those he owed money to and people financially struggling. Anne worried about Elizabeth and her mother's health. So tragic.
    George really gets a bad rep and deserves to be remembered honestly especially onscreen. Hopefully Claire's new book will help change people's minds

    It would be so great to see a drama that focuses on George Boleyn. I didn’t like the way that he was portrayed in the Tudors series. I thought that Pádraic Delaney was a great actor, but he needed more to work with to portray a more nuanced and more accurate George Boleyn. The George in the series isn’t even allowed the speech that the historical George gave in real life. Thanks for a great episode, Claire!

    🇭🇲🦘 I very much enjoyed this summary of facts about George Boleyn. Whilst none were not known by me, some facts I had forgotton, and to hear about them again, I found most interesting.
    I must now go and view your other videos on George Boleyn, even though I have only recently finished 'catching up' on viewing your videos about Mary Boleyn.
    🔷️ I was so pleased that you mentioned George's marriage with Jane Parker. I do believe that they were 'happily' married, even though so many other books and movies say differently. There is more proof that it was a happy marriage, than that it wasn't.
    Also, with George's high influence at Court, he could have divorced her if he had wished, and even remarried. He did not! They both had demanding jobs at court (which meant they were often apart) However, that doesn't mean that they were not 'close'. ❤❤

      So glad it looks like George and Jane had a happy marriage after all. They both deserve to be remembered and portrayed onscreen correctly.
      Never knew George contracted sweating sickness. I assumed Anne and Carey were the only known family members to have done so.
      It goes to show how caring and good George and Anne actually were. While awaiting death, instead of feeling sorry for themselves, they worried about others. George about people he owed money to and those struggling financially and Anne worrying about little Elizabeth and the health of her dear mother. So sad and tragic. What a waste 🌹💕

      @@Shane-Flanagan Hello Shane. Always nice to hear from you. You wrote "I stand corrected" about your knowledge about George. Don't worry, as I 'stand corrected' most of the time. hahaha 🤣 I have a memory like a sieve, finding it hard to retain information. We all continue to learn amazing new things about amazing people from the past. YOU ALSO wrote, "I shamefully only knew 3 ... etc etc .."! There is NO need for you to ever be ashamed. I knew only some of these things about George (as I said) but I have found (through Claire's wonderful research and work) that there is no much more about George Boleyn, than any of us could have imagined.
      This is why I love viewing Claire's many videos and her books. I am still learning how to use tech stuff. I only began using a Tablet early in 2020. On finding Claire's videos including her Ask Claire videos, and by Subscribing I am able to go to her many Playlists on many Subjects and am still 'playing catchup' from her 2018, 2019 and 2020 videos; including the ones she 'puts out' on a regular basis. I watch the most recent (although haven't viewed todays yet as wanted to first send this to you) and I then go back to suggested links (suggested by Claire).
      When I began viewing (due to me not being tech-savvy at all) I contacted Claire via email and she very kindly helped me to learn, and know how to find things on RUclips etc., until I became more proficient. Claire replied many times via email to assist me, which I though very thoughtful and kind of her, given how very busy she was, and is. Nothing was too much trouble. Hence my loyalty to Claire's channel and her other works (recently mentioned to you by me). I know that if Claire doesn't know something, she will say so; but if she does, she shares any old or new information with us.
      I also like the the obvious 'passion' that shines through in Claire videos. Claire truly loves what she does, but is ALSO very good at what she does. Always informative, entertaining, friendly and fun. What more could we ask for? 😊👑👍

      @Denise-ki9ii 3 года назад +1

      I think that is a fault of the You Tube captioning as I have experienced big errors on other people's videos. When captioning is switched on it just runs automatically and errors are often down to how the software interprets accents. I suspect the channel creator's only input is to set their video up to be compatible with captions - not all You Tubers do this, but this is how I heard it explained on a different channel a few years ago.

    I watched the last episode of the second season of the series "Tudors " just few days ago. The last 2 episodes of that season concern the execution of George Boleyn and his Sister Ann. According to the series George had a very bad relationship with his wife and she witnessed against him when questioned by Cromwell. Apparently by watching this video I learn that, that was not true, or at least there is no evidence.

    • @tessat338

      Later authors, ahem male authors, took evidence of the note that George read out at his trial, the fact that George and Jane had no children and Jane's subsequent seemingly foolish behavior during the Catherine Howard affair and spun it to assume that Jane must have been a terrible person. And if she was a terrible person, and since she went back to serve at court after George and Anne's death, therefore, she must have had a hand in their downfall. This totally sets aside that as a viscountess, Jane might not have been able to gracefully retire from court without serious and dangerous repercussions. She also may have sort of needed to work, given that a lot of George's property was confiscated at his downfall.

    Thank you for this video. (Any of us who have a dim view of Henry's treatment of wives and friends should start the rumor that George Boleyn wrote 'Greensleeves' which has erroneously been attributed to Henry. LOL!)
    I got in a little difficulty on another channel for a quick comment I made. That video, which featured another recognised Tudor historian, stated that Anne Boleyn had NO idea of the charges against her prior to her trial. So I note with interest in today's video, at 2:23, Anne's comment from the tower about her brother's ability to make his bed.
    The comment I made which caused argument from another viewer was, if Anne went to trial in a Tudor court under Henry, accused of incest with her brother, the worst outcome would have been expected. It was intended as kind of a snide comment. Another person insisted Anne had absolutely NO idea what was happening. So I said no more and waited for a good opportunity to ask questions here. Was Anne completely ignorant of the charges before she went to trial?

    • @anneboleynfiles
      @anneboleynfiles  3 года назад +2

      She was told at her arrest that she was being accused of having sexual relations with three men: Mark Smeaton, Sir Henry Norris and an unnamed man. She was informed that Smeaton and Norris had confessed. So she wasn't completely in the dark, but Tudor defendants were not told the extent of the charges against them so they could not prepare properly to defend themselves.

    I just finished your book on George Boleyn and wanted to convey how much I enjoyed it. I was so impressed with George Boleyn's speech before his execution, his poetry, his letters. I had no idea he had gone to France so many times - even the Riviera. Francis I must of had a real liking for him. I had assumed he had ridden on the skirts of his sisters, but I did not realize what a hard worker he was. I didn't fully take his charm and intelligence into account or his wit and temperament. No wonder he was arrogant. If I possessed his gifts and station in life, I would be arrogant too. I could understand why he became a friend of kings.
