- I am back in Derbyshire, and I am back with Phil and Nikita.
Derbyshire has been mined for lead since Roman times, but the particular area of our explore, just outside Matlock, was extensively mined from the 1540s onwards,
In episode one of a trilogy of lead mine explores, we manage to find, and get into the little known 'Dunsley Springs' lead mine, before heading up the ridge to explore the vast lead workings of Bonsall Leys.
We find field after field of lead shafts, some left wide open, and even some cranes left over from a 1940s Fluorite mine.
The location is stunning and I would recommend a visit, but would avoid taking young children as many of the shaft caps are worn away or collapse entirely.

That I think was the most anxiety inducing episode of all of them thus far! I already get edgy with you and the stingers and slips! Just seeing how bloody deep those holes go, and then you walkin round and not looking down! Haha. Amazing ep though. Thanks for taking us through.

I found the Bonsal area to be an underated explore to be honest. The drone footage shows up just how crazy it must have been up in those fields, all those years ago !

Some nice spots in Cornwall I’m still exploring. Roche Rock is an interesting spot, and all the tors around Bodmin Moor. Helman Tor is pretty cool too.

Great little video that! We actually tried to find those cranes last year, but for some reason couldn’t, and I knew it wasn’t far from that via gellier road as well! I know exactly what you meant about that crazy sky to lol! For a different channel that lol!

I recommend you check out the Somerset Canal Space Walk. 12 miles from Bridgwater to Taunton. You can cycle it too. I live at the start of the walk. You'd be welcome to stay at my house Gareth.

One of my neighbours did a walk around there last year he came across some old machinery said ogles on it which was a old Ripley firm from years ago

You won't get me in those lead mines. Too claustrophobic. And breathing lead dust isn't something I want to do. However, you guys are doing a great job investigating all of these old mine works so people can understand part of how England was built. I am surprised that these lands aren't repurposed. Who owns these mining areas you explore?
Yeah, we do0n't stay down there too long to be honest! The land is public access, but part of farmers land I guess?
Having spent many years exploring the Bath Stone Mines around Corsham in Wiltshire this is my cuppa tea 🙂 The temperature usually underground in mines and caves is 10 degrees hence why it probably felt warm if this was filmed recently in winter.
Thanks for this info! Good luck mine was freezing, so that threw my point of reference off! Think maybe because there was an underground waterfall there so the water brought the temp down. Used to live in Chippenham myself.
