Martha Argerich, piano
1981, March 28th(New York/live)
"Olivier Bellamy: Do you like Brahms? I once read that it (his music) depresses you.
Martha Argerich: When I play it, I love it, but it's not the kind of music I'm naturally inclined to. I worked on the Piano Concerto No. 2 with Gulda, but I never played it in concert. It may be a story of libido. Certain pianists adore his music: Irene Russo, Hélène Grimaud, Karin Lechner... They are perhaps women attracted to older men. That was never the case with me. I played his Piano Sonata No. 2 for a while because it is very Schumannian (...) I like Brahms. It was Gulda who didn't like him very much."

OMG I can't believe this! Never thought I'd be able to hear Brahms piano sonata played by Martha!
me2
Sameee
This is a real surprise to me, that she played Brahms Sonata 2. Bravo!
This is by far the most high voltage intrepation of this highly complex work.
So much details going on inside and out.
It's a very rare performance!!
Thank you for uploading the video☺️
I was at this recital which was magnificent. She played "Romeo and Juliet" and I believe the Bach C minor Partita. She ran off the stage at the end and I don't believe there were any encores.
Hey, Sofia. I have already posted her account of "Romeo and Juliet" here on my channel last year
Many of her performances do not have encores.
@@MaxLima1 Thank you. I missed that!
There were 2 encores; 1st mov of Schumann’s Scenes from Childhood and Scarlatti d minor sonata.
Wow! Can't believe I'm finally hearing this. Thank you very much! God bless you Max Lima🤘
I’ve been waiting for this for years!! Can’t believe you have this. Thank you!!!
Omg!!! I waited for this recording for so long !!! 😍😍😍😍
Graciassss muchas Max 😉💯💫👍👍👍
What an incredible 24 minutes of magic music making. Thank-you dearest Max Lima for bringing to the surface this precious sunken treasure. No pretending that this sonata is a great piece of music (best considered as a dramatic dress rehearsal for the F minor) but Argerich's white hot performance (complete with her miraculous octaves) certainly causes us to reevaluate. I think Brahms would have LOVED this.
Why is this not great music to you?
@@richterkleiber There are numerous awkward/inexperienced passages (both musically and technically) which one does not encounter in later Brahms. But that is only how I sense it, you have a different relationship with this music. All good. Peace.
@@gerontius34 was just curious-I completely get what you’re saying! 🥂🎹
Gracias max por este gran tesoro
Brahms + Martha = 😍
Omg...it is precious .....
リヒテルは聴いたことがありましたが、アルゲリッチの音源は初めて聴きました。いつも貴重な音源をありがとうございます。感謝。
Que incrível!!! Muito obrigado Max!!! 😻❤️
Finally! I've been waiting this for years, thank you SO much!!!
MERAVIGLIOSA SEMPREEE ;)
Katchen and 1959 S. Richter, but I have to admit this is intriguing and very, very good! If you listened to this for the first time not knowing who the artist was, you'd have no problem deducing it's Argerich.
Thank you Max!
Ahh. Here's a great match.
Some moments at the outer movements are indeed overwrought, one must admit…BUT, the inner ones are plenty of masterful touches, insight, elan, nonchalance and the exact dose of sensitivity. I have deeply enjoyed her account! Will we have some day a decent comercial recording of this historic concert?
Hey Max, do you have any videos of Martha participating in any masterclasses? Love your content and videos
Dear Max, that is a wonderful gift! I was hoping for soooo long to hear it again!!! I knew it existed as I had already heard it once in the ‘80s at Juanita’s home in Paris…. Let me try a guess… did you find it at Alberto’s tape collection? ❤️
Sim, rsrs
@@nicolaus2010 👑
Juanita as in Martha's mother? Alberto as in Portugheis?!
WHOA
In these years she also played Scriabins 5. sonata - should this be lost?
Whattt are you serious?
Well , that must be something!
M. Agerich and Brahms when younger would have made a wonderful couple 😇
This recital was around the time she stopped giving solo recitals altogether. I wonder if this recital had something to do with it?
Perhaps she did not play it for not showing so much of her innermost self, as comes out here...Of the two Concertos by Ravel, the one she loves the most is the one for the left hand...but never played it because she would give away too much of herself, she said!
The same goes for Beethoven PC #4, although there is at least one bootleg of her playing the concerto.
@@j.vonhogen9650 Of the 4th?
Where?
She said that she doesn't play it.
@@lospazio - I know. It's a (low quality) bootleg, but beautiful nevertheless. I must still have a copy on an old CDR somewhere in my storage place. At the time, I was also very lucky to find a very rare recording of Argerich playing the 2nd Liszt concerto, but that one was eventually uploaded to RUclips by Peter Lemken a couple of years ago (you may use RUclips Search to find that one).
Anyway, as soon as I find that Beethoven recording, I'll get back to you with more details, but it may take a while, since I got it many years ago.
Cheers!
@@j.vonhogen9650 Wow
Can you send it to me too? garroyojose@gmail.com
@@j.vonhogen9650 Really? Perhaps you mean the 5ht concerto, no? I am pretty sure that she never played the 4th.
Nor Rachmaninoff or Debussy
I thought she doesn’t play Brahms😱
she did record the rhapsodie 79/1
And the Op. 79/2 too
She plays Brahms chamber music
She is too much of a speed demon here in this Brahms Sonata.
why?
@@lieder01 Maybe they can't play it as well.
Yes, but what a passion!
