Radiohead's Lost Wall of Ice Album

  • The Wall of Ice story centers around a leaked Radiohead song, These Are My Twisted Words. Nobody knows for sure where it came from or whether it was the only song meant to be released at the time, but speculation was rampant about a possible album or EP.
The song was unconventional but it’s the equally unconventional story surrounding it that’s of note. It’s a product of the internet at the time filled with mysterious people, websites, and files.
A lot happened during that week in 2009. Was this really a lost Radiohead album / EP? It’s an interesting story with little closure but details that will make you wonder what was going on.

Good band with songs I never like. And I like lots of “depressing music” (Neil Young) and idiosyncratic bands. Also dislike also Queen, think Pink Floyd is another good band with music that never moves me but towards boredom. Pearl Jam with arrogant Veeder is unlikeable. Rush all sounds the same. Underrated: Dinosaur Jr, The Replacements, Marshall Crenshaw, Buffalo Springfield. Two very mediocre records: The Beatles White Album and Abbey Road. Just ask George Martin when he was alive, he would tell you "oh I'm I'm still alive".

Bands, and especially Radiohead go into a studio a lot more than the average person knows. If anyone has ever wondered why multiple studios are credited or thanked in liner notes it is because albums often are comprised of songs recorded throughout a span of time and multiple different sessions. Of course sometimes it’s all done in one studio but I know in rainbows for sure was done in at least two places. I am almost certain that most of Nude from the album was actually the exact recording from their oxfordshire studio for their webcam series. They just spruced it up for the album. Which I don’t blame them at all, that recording could never be beat.
Anyway long story short… bands have ideas. Sometimes they share those ideas before they come to fruition and plans change. It seems like Radiohead had some pretty good sessions around 2009 that let them believe they would release something sooner. They probably stalled a bit, re thought it out and went back into a studio and recorded more and made the king of limbs out of what they had.
That’s not to say there isn’t more somewhere. I’d bet there is. As we have seen, they have been able to release recordings from eras twenty years prior. I’d bet a lot of money for material to surface when the 20 year anniversaries come up for every single album. In rainbows - king of limbs especially. I have no doubt we will get “new” old material every 20 year anniversary from now on. I’d guess there’s probably an early studio version of the present tense, a studio of open the floodgates, perhaps a studio or demo of “wake me before they come” , probably a studio piano version of burn the witch and numerous others that will materialize from the era.

Radiohead has done a very good job of staying relevant in the music community. In Rainbows released around 20 years after they formed and yet it's captured the attention and adoration of so many people much younger than them - even considered Radiohead's best album by tonnes of people, even older fans and critics. The fact that they change their promotional and release campaigns with each album helps.

I think Wall of Ice might have at one point been an EP the band planned to release digitally in 2009 thru torrents or something else as you say (with These Are My Twisted Words and a couple other tracks that end up on TKOL), but instead of that, they decided to drop Twisted Words as a single (with the sneaky leak beforehand), and keep plugging away in the studio, making more tracks than an EPs-worth to create The King of Limbs for a more proper album release. That's my theory anyway!

This, or damn near this is almost certainly the correct answer. Bands, and especially Radiohead go into a studio a lot more than the average person knows. I also recall reading an interview before TKOL album came out where a band member talked about going into the studio with a new batch/album of completed songs and Nigel Godrich told them to shelf it because they we’re going to create a new album together on the spot with each band member on a computer/synth and then they would have to recreate/reinterpret what loops/sounds/parts individually on their respective instruments. The results can be heard on tKOL album because it sounds like some effed up collage that was put through a sausage grinder and reinterpreted in a space where time and the color silver does not exist

Jonny Greenwood wrote the recording software they used to create the samples. There's an interview with Ed where he states the material for The King Of Limbs wasn't meant to be an official release, but at a listening party some friends had convinced them to commit to turning it into an album. Ed also talks about how he feels the songs didn't have enough time in the oven to bake properly. The live versions on some of the tracks definitely breath more!
