- Me and a few friends of mine have been wanting to do the Trans New Jersey Trail for our first overland trip, with it being in the winter we had a significant amount of road closures, and here is how it went. 450 Miles of dirt and back roads.

Bro this is so awesome. I didn’t know jersey had shit like this. 10/10
Same here!
The road closures around buttermilk falls around Wallace are because NJ closed it to vehicles for people to walk on the road. It’s dumb, but it’s been permanently closed for years.
I love how unassuming that section on Brooke road is
The Trans-New Jersey is on my list of trails to complete one day. I've been up that way to poke around Wharton and Colliers Mills, and definitely want to tackle the full trail eventually.
It’s pretty easy just a LONG trip if your trying to do it in 2.5 days. If you want to see areas of New Jersey I would say make it a 4-5 day trip and take your time and plan out places you want to visit along the way.
@@TheJourneyForTomorrow Awesome. Thanks for the insight!
Ditto, no rocky roads once you got down to my neighborhood in the Pines.
I recognized Boundary road, I was on that a few weeks ago
I drive up that first obstacle in my Impreza all the time twice today actually 😂
Walpack/Buttermilk falls area is still crap right with all of the closures, they’ve done very little to fix any of it
I really want to do this with my kids. I need to get my trail truck finished by next spring
It’s definitely a fun route and nothing overly wild either
The first obstacles my buddy did in a manual first gen crv lol great trails
Is it stock or lifted? I have a manual '97 TJ but i'm afraid to wheel it and continuously stall.
@@TheJourneyForTomorrow stock height with some all terrains
Great video dude.
I am glad that you enjoyed it!
This looked like fun. I might have to give this a try.
Definitely do! Only challenging part is road closures lol, everything else is pretty straight forwards.
@@TheJourneyForTomorrow Besides my bus (definitely wont work on the trails) I have a stock 07 GX470. Think it'll make it or would I need a lift and bigger tires?
@@buscampers It might be challenging at times (depending on your driving abilities), but I don't see it being anything that wouldn't be manageable. (We came across a Volkswagen Tiguan that had their front bumper hanging off on the one trail). Your best bet would be to go when its been dry for a week or so, since I know from Brendan Byrne and south its not uncommon to hit areas with 3 feet of standing water when its been raining for a few days.
@@TheJourneyForTomorrow I’ve driven around Wharton a little bit but that was to check out the different campsites. I can’t drive over the bridge to get to Hawkins w the bus so I was checking out the dirt roads to get to it. I ended up in Bodine to film a winter camping trip. I felt that route was probably the best suited for the bus.
But yeah, some of the puddles are pretty large. Luckily I didn’t come across anything deep.
I live 20 minutes from high point. This trail is on my list
7:21 That part👍
Sweet, definitely would like to join ya and some of my guys and do a off-road convoy
Message when and ill definitely come out sometime!
I kinda miss Jersey. I used to run with Jersey Shore Jeepers and had a blast with everyone. I have a done that needs a new home. I believe it's a DJI Mavic Pro
I have been trying to go out with Jersey Shore Jeepers but whenever they have an event I am out doing something on my own...I am currently looking at getting the DJI Mavic Mini 2 or the 3, just waiting for a sale
@@TheJourneyForTomorrow Check out the Mini 3 Pro or the Air 2S. I'm using the Mavic 3 Classic, and honestly, it's overkill for what I do. I had an Air 2S and should have just kept that.
Anyone doing this trail again in the coming months? Can it be done on a RWD dually? From the video did not seem like 4WD was really needed?
Would be great to get a group together!
Does thebred taco not have 4wd? Im sure the camera flattened that hill out on video but dude looks like hes in 2h
Correct 2 wheel drive. I think open rear differential.
I recently got a 22 ranger. Been trying to dabble more in off-roading/overlanding. Everything is stock for now but would want to try some spots. I am curious about the break point that you took at round valley. would you have the coordinates for it? would love to take pictures there
Just Google “Round Valley Reservoir”. Where we were was the bottom of the parking lot
Oh damn that's 15 minutes from me
Lol dude my name is also Jay and I drive a black fj cruiser 🤔 might have to come wheel with y’all sometime
I’m out in NY
The husky bin is nice isnt it? I left my tailgate open on accident and the bin fell out. All 6 latches stayed shut and none of the plastic corners broke. I thought 30$ might have been a little expensive for mine but now i dont regret a thing and ill buy more when i need them.
Since this video I have swapped the husky bin out for a 2 Front Runner boxes. The reason why is because I did not like having everything in 1 box and sorting through. With my Front Runner boxes I can sort everything into 2 boxes while having a box designated for recovery items and a box dedicated to anything I might need while at camp.
@@TheJourneyForTomorrow Yea i hear you. Looks like you have one of the larger ones. I thought that was too big and went with the 12 gallon. It fits all my recovery gear pretty well. Ill probably get another 12 and stack them. What's your next overland trip going to be?
@@DubstepTH not 100% sure yet. I know I have a handful of trips in mind that are long day trips. Are you local to PA? There’s a few places in upper PA/southern NY that I want to go explore
@@TheJourneyForTomorrow Im in Newburgh NY
Awesome video. Can you share the brand of tent. (Silver tent)
Shiftpod Mini 3…I believe they are currently discounted
Looks nice, where is the trail located at?
For the most part the entire western half of New Jersey from the northern tip to the southern tip
I've been trying to find vehicle trails in the tri-state. I've never heard of trans NJ. Is it legal, and is it on on-x?
I found the GPX file on Gaia. I’m not sure if it will automatically appear on OnX
How was this mapped out? Was it through Gaia ?
Honestly I am not sure, I downloaded the GPX file from somewhere online.
I think this was originally a GPX file posted on the overland forums, I’ll reply with it when I find it
Where does it start in Atlantic County?
Send me a DM on Instagram and I can show you a screenshot of the area that starts around Atlantic County @TheJourneyForTomorrow
What is the name of that beach you mentioned around 16:02 ?
Moores Beach
Where y’all from I’d love to do this trail with y’all
Im in PA the rest of the guys that went on the trip are in (my opinon) North Jersey and Max in South Jersey
Trying to by pass a locked gate? Gives us all a bad name cmon
Let me clarify, on the GPX file the term bypass refers to an alternate route, due to roads being unmaintained in the winter. For those 3 spots where we could not make forward progress, I believe we took Old Mine Road to (615) where the trail rejoins. If I am misunderstanding your comment, please reach out to me personally.
