He has amazing skills and most of the people here (and there) couldn't play that with both hands, Govan KNOWS that and was simply demonstrating that this kind of fretting skill is indeed important in "real life" like he said.

    • @shredd5705
      @shredd5705 Год назад

      This particular ability to play without picking the notes is just result of hard practice, and practicing this exact thing. It's really useful and actually the backbone of any truly clean playing. People often talk about talent, when they mean hard work.

    • @TheCyberMantis
      @TheCyberMantis Год назад

      @@shredd5705 Lots of people can put-in the hard work, and never achieve these results. To be great, it takes the combination of natural ability, and years of practice. You need to have the ear for it. And the feel for it. And then you need to apply yourself. If you have no talent for it, it will be a struggle forever. Progress will be painfully slow. Most will lose interest at some point. Nobody likes doing things they suck at. But when you can see real progress, it motivates you to keep going.

    • @shredd5705
      @shredd5705 Год назад

      @@TheCyberMantis Sure... you need basic musical talent. But say, Kirk Hammett could learn to play this legato, if he tried hard enough. It's not talent, but practice and finger coordination and strength that comes from repetitions (I was not talking about how Guthrie plays and improvises overall, which is out of reach for most guitarists even... but about how he plays on this video, which is just fancy legato that anyone musical can do with enough practice)

      markbo1957 Are you a troll?... Oh well, i can't leave this be, so in case you were serious:
      the point is: the quality of a piece of gear should NEVER surpass the abilities of an individual. To use your own example, the point is this: a major league MLB player in my opinion, is embarrassing himself if he can't perform equally on any piece of gear regardless. It's the skill, not the materials used. Same thing goes for guitar. It's a blindingly lazy illusion that a good guitar makes a guitar player sound better. You're supposed to be like Johnny B. Goode: play the guitar like ringing a bell. No matter what guitar you're playing. Many people refuse to face this, maybe because they're not good enough, maybe because they're lazy. I say no excuses. Be good, or go home and practice.
      And to answer your question on how many in the world can do that... I can do that. And many MANY other players can do that. It's really not that hard on an amped electric guitar, trust me. That's why i wrote what i wrote. It's really fucking hard on an acoustic guitar, especially with corroded strings ;)

      Still wrong, though. Some people just learn certain things faster than average. Other people work their asses off and still don't accomplish much.
      You can be pretty good with just talent or just hard work but to be great you need both. That applies to everything in life basically.

    It's like living at the same time as a wunderman like Mozart. What an inspiration to know how good we all should be. Seeing is believing. By the way, on this technique, which I learned 30 years ago (I thought I had invented it... ha!) You can place your right hand loosely on the strings where the band is on the neck to mute the strings so that you don't need the band. You can see Steve Vai and a few others use this trick once in awhile. Left hand hammer and legato can be quite fun!

    this demonstrate that the sucessful in guitar, or in music, is practicing hours and hours everyday, amateur players or people with the dream to be like these gods, dont take that truly.

      @mike1967sam 7 лет назад +4

      ᶘoᴥoᶅ In fact and in actuality he didn't. He didn't even kill Clapton this was just my way of praising him because he's amazing but guys like Clapton, Jeff Beck and so many others are every bit as good as Guthrie if not better because you see merit is not solely based on technical prowess, it's based on creativity, it's based on developing a very specific style of playing that encompasses creativity, technique, some speed and a whole lot of feeling so your comment is very very wide of the mark.

    • @faggotsmoker9588
      @faggotsmoker9588 7 лет назад +9

      Purple Haze actually, technical proficiency is what defines a good guitar player. bending and vibrato and all that shit are part of technique.
      and objectively speaking, people like Clapton and Beck don't even come close to Guthrie.

  • @TomMilleyMusic

    oh my god people shut up. music is not a contest. stop bitching over who you think is better or whether guthrie is good or sucks. it's not a damn contest, stop pretending like your opinion is the be all and end all of musical facts. you're missing the ENTIRE point of music and art when you think that way.

    • @WilliamSlaght
      @WilliamSlaght 9 лет назад

      ***** Well this guy chosen that perspective on music. The thing with music and art is this: it depends on the perspective you have on it. You can understand how music can be a technical contest, yet on the other hand you can also understand how music is supposed to be only emotional, spiritual or whatever, yet on the other hand you can also see music as the understanding of harmony by studying chord chemistry or Bach, yet on the other hand you can also see music as 99% rhythm since rhythm is so important and that triplets rule the world, yet on the other hand you can see music like bebop saying that bebop will make you understand harmony more than Bach, yet on the other hand you can see music as just sound and the idea of kids going together and making sounds with the same old tools is nothing new, but can be enjoyed nevertheless, yet on the other hand you can see music as just sound that stirs up emotions and thoughts, yet on the other hand you can see music as just a purpose to dance, yet on the other hand you can see music as the backdrop for the melody and poetry, and that the lyrics needs to have meaning, yet on the other hand you can see music as scientific, with its fluctuations, waves that are either balanced or unbalanced and how it affects the mind and thus triggers emotions, yet on the other hand you can see music in...... MANY WAYS!
      You know what music is all of this and even more. Even if it is paradoxical and contradictory, music is and can be all of this depending on the perception of the individual with his/her interpretations of some songs in the vast infinite field of what music is.
      TL;DR?

    • @jamieflexman

      Kirk is a brilliant guitarist.. but comparing him to Guthrie is strange and pointless. It's like comparing a 100m sprinter who has a PB of 9.95 seconds against Usain Bolt.
      They are also performing for different purposes. People are watching Guthrie specifically for his guitar playing, so 99.9% accuracy is the standard he must adhere to when performing live. Kirk is a component in a band, and as long as the overall song is great, that's the the standard - it's the same with most rock bands.

    its amazing how much you improve after practicing with one hand... especially if you then proceed to do this on an acoustic with higher action... your dexterity and strenght triples in a matter of weeks
    Drop that: "I should sell my guitar" whining and practice people!
