Washington VanLife - We Found a Lava Tube!

  • In this video I head into the Gifford Pinchot National Forest near Cougar, Washington. I find a nice dispersed camp off a forest road. Kelly came out to camp for a few days also. We went to the Ape Cave part of Mount Saint Helens Volcanic National Monument. It is a long lava tube that you can hike through. It was an awesome experience. I would not recommend doing it alone. We make it back to camp and cook up some dinner in the camper van.
    Thank you For Being Here.
*My name is Brian. I started living full time in a self built camper van in 2014 in my hometown of San Diego, CA. I hit the road full-time in 2015 to pursue seasonal work and travel around the U.S. I find free camping on public land and enjoy photography, hiking, biking, and kayaking in nature. Join me on my adventures.
    Thanks for watching!

Born and raised in Indiana with a dad from Cincinnati so I grew up on Skyline! Love the stuff. Only thing you're missing are the oyster crackers. After moving to Portland, OR a little over 5 years ago, I have to order my Skyline in pouches from the Walmart website.

Brian, "Skyline Chili" as you have it. Chili, Spaghetti, cheese and onions. Would be a "Four way" add beans and you have a "Five way".
"Skyline Chili" traces it's origins to Cincinnati, Ohio Yummy!!!!

I love hiking, I hope you stopped a few times in the tube.. That looked rough. I don't mean in that you were uneasy [I would be too], but just the terrain you went through- even a few miles (easy if level) over rough terrain feels like 2-3 times the distance. I once went on a hunting trail, 75% of it was rough and very much up and down through trees. It was several miles long, one way in and one way out. Even just the way in required a rest at least 30-45 minutes long before heading back. Glad you are in fit physical shape, and calm in outlook. It showed in your narration, while describing things you were calm and inviting. Even when you discussed your misgvings, while short and to the point it showed how calm you were. >Might I suggest you find a manual/crank light source of some kind you can carry with you if you ever get stuck as you discussed? It may help you even in van life- instead of turning on all your lights it can provide a limited brightness and power source that will be ready (I found a basically crank [via temporary lever pushing, doesn't sound/feel the greatest but it works] light that can be used if need be as one example) as well as a back up if you are on foot..

From the main entrance, there is a choice of two directions one can go. One way is a shorter, easier way. You two took the longer route, where it is advisable to bring a rope. Yes, it is advisable to bring lots of quality lights also. When I went, I ran into a group of German tourists relying on a 50-cent flashlight to get them all through. Not a good idea!

Another great video. Sorry that first shop didn't find your issue. So many times it turns out to be something simple but so often we either don't take the time or understand a proper trouble tree when doing diagnosis. If you are interested there is a cool story of a cave diver who was lost in a foreign country so they called in the experts from Florida. Took them days to get to the site but they found one dead and one alive. The person they found alive saw lights coming and he said he thought it was the Angels coming for him. How scary to be in the dark for days waiting to die.
