Just want to let out some of my thoughts about the album on an analysis level. Now, I don't want to assume anything about Ariana and her relationships but I'm going to state my personal theory just to make understanding the album a little easier on myself. What I thought: Let's get one thing out of the way: I believe Ariana was in love with Mac deeply. I honestly think that he was her "true love." Going through the songs in an order: "Imagine" seemed to be Ariana telling Mac to imagine all the things that they could've been and could've done. After their breakup due to her not being able to handle the effects of his drug addiction, she must have been heartbroken because they seemed to be truly in love. She needed a distraction, likely why she got together with Pete. She was "needy" for Pete. After Mac's death, Ariana must have been devastated and "NASA" maybe tells about her needing space forom Pete in that time. Ariana then goes on to say she no longer wants Pete in her "bloodline." I believe this is when she realizes that Pete was merely a distraction and not "the one." She goes on to talk about her "fake smil[ing]" in front of others. She pretended to be okay but in reality she was going through a lot of emotional distress. I'm not too sure about "bad idea" but it may just be more of her realizing that being with Pete wasn't her best decision. In "make-up" it seems that Ariana attempts to reassure herself that everything she thought initially about Pete being her distraction was false and that in reality she was just thinking and behaving that way so that they could makeup since post-make up, when the two partners fall back in love is a good feeling. After that she dismisses this thought in ghostin and apologizes to Pete, saying that she knows he tried his best to support her but in the end it just didn't work out. She was in love with Mac and the death of him was a huge blow. She admits that she knows that her crying over Mac hurts Pete and she apologizes for the pain she has caused Pete. Then the vibe TOTALLY switches up. In the song "in my head" is Ariana's final acknowledgment that Pete WAS a distraction and the "deep love" she thought she had for him was just "in her head" and in reality, the relationship was just toxic being based off of the need for an escape. She may have loved Pete, but not as deeply as she thought and not as deeply as she showed the world. In 7 rings, Ariana steps back from talking about her relationships and takes time to appreciate her friendships and talks about bossing up and feeling good. In thank u, next, she takes time to say thank you to all her relationships for everything that each one taught her and helped her with. The "next" part is her dismissing her past after saying thank you. Almost like the closure of a chapter and the anticipation of a new one. In "break up with your girlfriend i'm bored" I think it's more about Ariana telling her boyfriend to break up with herself so that she can spend more time with herself. So Ariana telling her man to break up with Ariana so that Ariana can learn to love Ariana. Lol, what a tongue twister. I hope this helps anyone. These are just my personal thoughts. Of course no one knows if any of this is true but I'm just leaving this here for myself so I can try to understand the concepts of the album :)

CAN I JUST SAY SOMETHING. even though i don’t really like pete, i honestly respect him sticking with her through all of this. he deeply cared for her, but ariana still loved mac while she was together with pete. and she finally realized that when mac died. pete tried everything he could to help her but her whole world was upside down, so she didn’t know what she needed. sometimes she wanted affection, as you can hear in needy, but sometimes she just needed space, as NASA says. ghostin shows us that she knows she has to cut the knot with pete but she appreciates everything he’s done for her. and i think that even though he has showed us that he can be an asshole lowkey, we should respect him. because obviously this has been a very distressing time for him too

i feel like after the tragedies that happened to her before sweetener, (like her break up w mac and manchester) she was trying to rediscovering herself and finding her true feelings, which can be seen within the "different" types of tracks on sweetener. ariana was bringing the happiness out of her pain that she experienced rather than realizing how much pain is in her head and tried to have a fresh start w pete to escape from reality. with thank u next i believe that after the grief she experienced with mac's death and her break up w pete, she realized how her relationship with pete was only an escape from reality. she has recognized everything that she has lost with mac's death. she found that the level of love that she had with pete was only to ignore how much pain she had inside her mind at the time, which leads her to wanting to love and find herself again in the tracks thank u next and buwygib

After their breakup due to her not being able to handle the effects of his drug addiction, she must have been heartbroken because they seemed to be truly in love. She needed a distraction, likely why she got together with Pete. She was "needy" for Pete. After Mac's death, Ariana must have been devastated and "NASA" maybe tells about her needing space forom Pete in that time. Ariana then goes on to say she no longer wants Pete in her "bloodline." I believe this is when she realizes that Pete was merely a distraction and not "the one." She goes on to talk about her "fake smil[ing]" in front of others. She pretended to be okay but in reality she was going through a lot of emotional distress. I'm not too sure about "bad idea" but it may just be more of her realizing that being with Pete wasn't her best decision. In "make-up" it seems that Ariana attempts to reassure herself that everything she thought initially about Pete being her distraction was false and that in reality she was just thinking and behaving that way so that they could makeup since post-make up, when the two partners fall back in love is a good feeling. After that she dismisses this thought in ghostin and apologizes to Pete, saying that she knows he tried his best to support her but in the end it just didn't work out. She was in love with Mac and the death of him was a huge blow. She admits that she knows that her crying over Mac hurts Pete and she apologizes for the pain she has caused Pete. Then the vibe TOTALLY switches up. In the song "in my head" is Ariana's final acknowledgment that Pete WAS a distraction and the "deep love" she thought she had for him was just "in her head" and in reality, the relationship was just toxic being based off of the need for an escape. She may have loved Pete, but not as deeply as she thought and not as deeply as she showed the world. In 7 rings, Ariana steps back from talking about her relationships and takes time to appreciate her friendships and talks about bossing up and feeling good. In thank u, next, she takes time to say thank you to all her relationships for everything that each one taught her and helped her with. The "next" part is her dismissing her past after saying thank you. Almost like the closure of a chapter and the anticipation of a new one. In "break up with your girlfriend i'm bored" I think it's more about Ariana telling her boyfriend to break up with herself so that she can spend more time with herself. So Ariana telling her man to break up with Ariana so that Ariana can learn to love Ariana. Lol, what a tongue twister.
I hope this helps anyone. These are just my personal thoughts. Of course no one knows if any of this is true but I'm just leaving this here for myself so I can try to understand the concepts of the album :)

The album is best played when the tracklist is played "upside down" in my opinion. Starting with "break up with yo.." and ending with "imagine". It almost feels like the album is meant to be played this way, keeping in theme with her 'upside down' era. It sounda weird lol but you should really try it and the album flows way better this way.

CAN I JUST SAY SOMETHING. even though i don’t really like pete, i honestly respect him sticking with her through all of this. he deeply cared for her, but ariana still loved mac while she was together with pete. and she finally realized that when mac died. pete tried everything he could to help her but her whole world was upside down, so she didn’t know what she needed. sometimes she wanted affection, as you can hear in needy, but sometimes she just needed space, as NASA says. ghostin shows us that she knows she has to cut the knot with pete but she appreciates everything he’s done for her. and i think that even though he has showed us that he can be an asshole lowkey, we should respect him. because obviously this has been a very distressing time for him too

I personally love ballads because they often get personal and if you can make me feel something as an artist, then you've done a fantastic job in my opinion! AJ is also really good at piecing together lyrics and details to get the full picture.

i feel like after the tragedies that happened to her before sweetener, (like her break up w mac and manchester) she was trying to rediscovering herself and finding her true feelings, which can be seen within the "different" types of tracks on sweetener. ariana was bringing the happiness out of her pain that she experienced rather than realizing how much pain is in her head and tried to have a fresh start w pete to escape from reality. with thank u next i believe that after the grief she experienced with mac's death and her break up w pete, she realized how her relationship with pete was only an escape from reality. she has recognized everything that she has lost with mac's death. she found that the level of love that she had with pete was only to ignore how much pain she had inside her mind at the time, which leads her to wanting to love and find herself again in the tracks thank u next and buwygib
