Hi Catherine! As someone else commented, those pink flowers are Bougainvillea. So pretty - especially the deep pink or purple colored ones. They even come in orange! I wonder if they could be grown in Ireland? Thanks for another fun ramble! Johanna
Madeira is such a pretty place to visit, I called in there many years ago on a cruise ship. We didn't have much time to explore apart from wandering around Funchal. I remember the embroidery and Madeira wine being a feature of our visit.

A friend is visiting Spain and Portugal in May and June, then on to Ireland and Iceland. Thank you for the lovely travelogue. The flowers are lovely.
The pink flowering plant on your balcony is a Bougainvillea. Lovely to look at but a bugger in the garden as they grow feral and have wicked thorns. There are other smaller versions available.
Almost all of my friends speak Portuguese and are from Portugal. The Azores and the Continent. I live in an area with a very high concentration of Portuguese Americans. It was fun to see some of the places I have heard about. I am supposed to go with my bestie in the next year or so as her mother still lives there. She is from the continent. I am definitely not fluent in Portuguese but I can speak enough to get get by and read a menu etc.. They make the most amazing food! I love how you have traveled the world solo. It’s inspiring. Once I am done paying for my son’s college I cannot wait to do the same. In the meantime I will live through you.❤️❤️
My son in law is half Madeiran and I can’t wait for my first trip to Madeira!
