The greatest era in heavyweight history. When you think that Muhammad Ali stopped both these guys inside the distance when they were at their peak, in fact the fight with Ali was Foreman's last fight before this one and was the only time Foreman was ever stopped in 81 fights over a 28 year period. Ali stopped Lyle 7 months after he KO'd Foreman. He also beat Ken Norton 2 out of 3 and Joe Frazier 2 out of 3 and beat Earnie Shavers too after all those. That's why he was the greatest. All those guys mentioned here were better than anyone Tyson ever beat. That was not Tyson's fault, there were no top class fighters around in his era. The first top class fighter Tyson ever fought was Holyfield in 1996.

@William Lacombe Norton lost twice to Ali, by spilit decision and by unanimous decision. He beat Ali once, by split decision. Styles make fights though and Norton's style gave Ali the most trouble of anyone's.As with several of Ali's opponents of that era (Frazier, Foreman, Lyle, Shavers),Norton was a better fighter than anyone Mike Tyson ever beat in his entire career.

Boxing is very dependent on styles, George devastated men that Ali had trouble with. The greatest period in boxing,

Better than all 4 of them, and Lennox, with his laid back, prodding jab, rarely moving style would get ate up by Foreman, who bullies his way in behind a rock hard jab and starts landing power shots. The Mercer fight proved Lewis had trouble with good jabbers - Foreman beats him.

Foreman made the comment himself after Lewis v Rahman 2 that Lewis was the greatest heavyweight in his opinion. Maybe he was just in the moment during the broadcast but I dont think George wanted Lewis at all. Love me some George though - that would have still been a wild fight even at George's older age.

This is the most ferocious fight I’ve ever seen. Two big strong men bashing the shit out of eachother. Incredible really. Hearns Hagler, great as it was, wasn’t even close to this slugfest. Both guys were down 2-3 times each. Both were seconds away from getting ko’d several times.
What a fight. Ron Lyle underrated fighter he’s one of the greatest. And George shows great heart and resilience here, as well as supernatural power in his punches.

Ali, George Foreman, Ken Norton, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, Ron Lyle, and, of course, Earnie Shavers, a guy that Ali himself said threw the heaviest punch he ever took. Check out the highlights from Lyle/Shavers in 1975 sometime. Unbelievable brutality.

The first was Rocky Marciano in 1962 at Gladiator's Arena in Totowa, NJ where Rocky was managing a fighter named Ducky Dietz (he lost). I went up to Rocky at ringside to get his autograph and he put his arm around me and let me sit beside him for a while. I was 18 at the time and didn't wash my shoulder for a month. The second was Leon Spinks whom I met at South Point Hotel in Las Vegas (2012) What a gentlerman!

OK then...I've SEEN LEWIS FIGHT and nothing of what I've SEEN makes me think a flat footed, glass jawed jabber would beat a grizzly bear with gloves on like George Foreman. Every Lewis weakness is a Foreman strength. Lewis is chinny - Foreman hits like a truck. Lewis has trouble with jabbers - Foreman had a telephone pole jab. Lewis lacked good footwork/movement - he'd have to move to keep Foreman from overwhelming him. A Foreman KO win is the only way I can see this one going.

6'5" nothing. It makes no difference. Styles make fights. And Foreman still had his jab as a young fighter, maybe not as good, but he used it to keep Norton off balance and to set up his haymakers. In his prime only Ali beat Foreman, a Foreman who fell into a trap and wasn't 100% even before the fight. Would Lewis rope-a-dope Ali? LOL. The Young fight was a sham. You can only beat George by outboxing him - something Lewis wouldn't be able to do simple. He could barely outbox Mercer.

Tyson fought Holyfield, and Holyfield knocked out Tyson. An old/slow and overweight George Foreman fought Holyfield, and the fight went the distance. How does this fight prove Tyson would be George? Lyle is a huge guy, with gigantic power, he almost killed Joe Bugner, from the power he unleashed on his body.
Tyson would have big trouble with either of these, but especially George.

Lyle is the only fighter who dropped Foreman twice in a fight.Foreman himself admitted he has never been hit so hard & credited Lyle as one of the hardest puncher .Lyle did tire himself out stupidly to get knocked out.Foreman in his career lost to Cooney & Holyfield because both were very good counter punchers .While cooney hit Foreman from long range to win the fight & it was Holyfield who proved that by landing repeatedly combinations Foreman could be defeated.Foreman was not that good in defence but was too good in throwing haymaker combinations for 15 rounds & he paced himself very beautifully in the second comback of his career.Big George Foreman ranks as one of the best boxers in history of that sport.

Foreman had good defence. He was just slow. His defence is what helped him beat Lyle in this fight. Note how he started ducking right down to evade Lyle punches. Unconventional but it helped. Foreman is a very good boxer, he just didn't pace himself when he was younger.
Also, this fight should have been over in round 1, when Foreman was battering Lyle on the ropes and Lyle was hurt and hardly throwing a punch. But the round was ended after 2 minutes instead of 3.
