This is one of Ali's best fights demonstrating his not only technical skills but also his character. He is inviting the ref to stop the fight so the opponent is not damaged furthermore. After seeing the ref does not have that caliber, he is still going moderate at a perfect level to cause a technical knockout WITHOUT damaging the guy. Neither the ref nor the opponent understands this elegance! May God's peace and blessing be upon Ali forever!

True ... This was not the first time Ali waved a ref in to stop it . Yes , a great boxer , but an even better man . Watch his fight with Jerry Quarry ... Quarry was cut .... beaten .... Ali signaled for the ref to come in and stop it ....

@@rpomex SLOW stoppage? The ref actually got criticism for stopping the fight at all. Most people thought Lyle was winning, and he was ahead on the cards.
I thought the ref stopped it at the right time. Unfortunately, Lyle had stopped fighting. Hernandez gave Lyle a couple of chances to regroup, and resume fighting and blocking punches, and when Lyle didn't do that, Hernandez stepped in.

Ali made you laugh. Tyson made you sick. Ali would have easily beat Tyson. Tyson could punch, but he had no balance, footwork, or style. The Buster Douglas fight was no fluke. Up to that point, Tyson hadn't fought anyone who could actually hit him back or had the smarts to not go toe to toe with him. Plus Douglas wasn't afraid of him. I think Shavers would have flattened Tyson. I'm not saying Tyson wasn't a good fighter; he was, but he wasn't this 'invincible' monolith that the press (and himself) had made him out to be. Look at the fights with Holyfield. Especially the 'bite fight'. Tyson got so mad because he couldn't get to Holyfield, and resorted to biting his ear??!!

It was the last fight before the Thrilla in Manila. In the previous interviews, Ali says that he has been practicing this "technique" of punch absortion because he was going to use it against Frazier. If you see the complete fight against Lyle, you'll find it a little boring because Ali does that during half of the rounds. He just covers his face with his arms and waits for Ron's punches. Anyway, he's the f*****g GOAT

What a number of people DO NOT know is that this Muhammad Ali in 1975 was past his prime years! Ali's prime years (Mar. 1967 - Nov. 1970) were taken away from him by the US government for his refusal to be inducted into the Armed Forces, even though he was promised non-combat status. Most of us NEVER saw the brilliant, magnificence of the Muhammad Ali of the 1960's as the heavyweight champion of the world (Feb. 1964 - May 1967). THAT Ali would have annihilated Joe Frazier in their first fight in 1971, but he took the Frazier fight to soon, after only two tune-up fights (Jerry Quarry and Oscar Bonavena). Thus, the Ali that most of us saw in the 70's was an older, re-invention of himself as he took on the world's top heavyweights perhaps of any era. Mike Tyson WOULD NOT have lasted 7 rounds against the Ali of the 60's and past 10 rounds with the Ali of the 70's (71-76) before his body started to deteriorate. The only Ali perhaps a young, in his prime Mike Tyson would have had a chance of beating was the old Muhammad Ali of 1978 (age 36), 1980-81 (ages 38 & 39), where he lost three fights that tarnished his remarkable, legendary career (Leon Spinks in 1978, Larry Holmes in 1980, and Trevor Berbick in 1981). Muhammad Ali was truly indeed, the GREATEST heavyweight boxer of all-time!

Exactly, I am happy to see other people are noticing these tiny details which made him unmatchable... how quickly he smells blood (it took him a split second to know Lyle was in trouble and went in for the finish) , and how he perfectly moves to maintain distance as if he's mirroring his opponent down to the millisecond.
Ali fought on pure instinct in a sport that is extremely technical. No gym in the world can ever teach you what Ali taught himself. Not even Angelo Dundee could ever teach him anything and was rather there as a consultant and not much more. In his fight against Foreman Dundee kept urging Ali to stay off the rope to the point where Ali got irritated and told his corner: "shut up i know what I am doing"...
When this man claimed he talks to god every day after beating Sonny Liston at 22 years old the reporter laughed. I doubt Ali was joking, he was basically trying to say he learns from life itself and from no one else, and that genuinely seems to be the case.

Ron Lyle was one of the hardest hitters in Heavyweight HISTORY. Ali beat him, Foreman, Liston, Williams, Frazier, Shavers AND Norton. These men had bone crushing fist, and Ali beat them with his will, speed, footwork, and reach. Plus, some of these men were beaten by him AFTER his prime years. He could take a punch too. This is why it's ridiculous to entertain the idea of him losing to Mike Tyson, who is basically a stronger version of Floyd Patterson, who Ali DESTROYED. Not to mention, if a fifth rate Ali like Buster Douglass can beat Tyson, Ali in his prime would've played with him like a sega genesis! Watch the Cleveland Williams fight, check out what Tyson himself said about Ali's greatness as a heavyweight, and then reconsider your thoughts on who would've won that match. NO COMPARISON. Best Heavyweight of ALL TIME. In fact, pound for pound...he rates only second to Sugar Ray Robinson.

Ron Lyle, having the constitution of a horse, was incredibly hard to get down. He'd stand there, take punch after punch, but stay on his feet until the bell rang. The only way to end it without taking inexcusable health risks (or even death) was by a referee decision. Ali knew that : he could further pummel Lyle, but basically Lyle was out of control and Ali kept him in that position until the referee did the right thing. From a commercial point of view, the ref was under pressure to make the fight last as long as possible, so he made a brave and professional decision.

Mister X no maybe not in top 5 but Joshua could be the 6th, because Ali, Norton, Frazier, foreman and Lyle could be top 5

When I watched Ali signalling to the referee to stop the fight, to take a look at Lye, wow I thought this legend had tremendous compassion for his hurt opponent.
This also reminds me when Manny Pacquio fought Antonio Margarito (who trash talked Pacquiao before fight). Seeing Margarito already eye swollen, Pacquiao looked at the referee to signal IF he had seen enough. After the fight, Pacquiao said boxing is not about killing your opponent. Such is his concern and compassion for his opponent.

a good friend was at this fight. closeup. he said the blows sounded like a watermelon slammed down on concrete.
Lyle was one tuff sob. All the credit to Ali to beat this very tough man.

Best chin ever Ali, totally underestimated how good it was. Took the hardest punches from some of the best punchers ever and was never knocked out.

Ali was fast because he does not put much power in his punches. So he signals the refere to stop the fight, because his punches are to weak, to ko someone like Ron lyle

Big George Forman and Earny Shavers said Ron Lyle was the hardest hitter they had ever fought. It's so incredible that Muhammad Ali slayed the monsters he did with his prime years taken away and Parkinsons lurking around.

Ali he was a true sportsman and had compassion for Ron Lyle and you can see that he did not want to beat him senseless when the ref was late in stopping the fight.
