  • Monks are the worst class in dungeons and dragons, however I don't hate them. i hate rogues. Rogues are my least favourite class, its not my fault that they are good! The purpose of my channel is to analyze the quality of the classes and pick and choose optimal class combos, and it just so happens that the monk is the WORST.

I have a friend who always plays a monk, though not the stereotypical monk. His monks are not very smart, his monks are just pure, kindhearted, naive chaotic good amazing characters.
I should also mention that in a campaign I was running there was a punching bag in every town, and he would always go up to these punching bags and the people who were at them would challenge him to a fistfight. And when he rolled strength it was a nat 20 every time. The dm also rolls saving throws because of house rules. That’s the story of how the monk knocked out the necromancy wizard bbeg.

What level were you guys? I can buy a warlock doing more damage with buffed up eldritch blast (starts at d10 and can add casting modifier to it) but a rogue shouldn't really be outpacing you for the most part. Monk speed buffs your base speed, so a dash should double your 40 move speed by level 2. If they're only dashing with their bonus action, they're not getting anything else out of it- such as 2 weapon fighting (extra chance to proc sneak attack if the first one misses) disengage because a rogue doesn't wanna be stuck in melee, or flatout hiding to avoid damage and getting advantage on attacks from being an unseen attacker (being hidden from enemies)

dnd combat is like a sport, a weird amalgam sport with magic and black jack and hookers, but a sport nonetheless. the tank classes (barbarian, druid*, paladin,) are the line backers controlling the enemies focus, the DPS classes (fighter, rogue, paladin,) are like the offense maneuvering around the tanks to get big opportunities for points (murders). Support classes (cleric, bard, druid) are the coaches. but monks are left in this weird outlier position. fast, nimble, agile. not soaking up hits but not dealing them out either, monks can focus on achieving goals that would be otherwise impossible for the other combatants, turning the tides through cleverness and speed...
The Monk ... is . . . the Seeker, chasing down any golden snitches

  • @connerkline6269
    @connerkline6269 2 года назад +4

I would say one strength of the Monk is actually probably how well it works with the group, though most of that comes from Stunning Strike.
By stunning an enemy, you open them up to getting absolutely destroyed by your party considering attacks have advantage and they AUTOMATICALLY FAIL any Strength or Dexterity Saving throws until the end on your turn, which is also important because Stunlocking is possible. And yes, a caster can cast Hold Person which makes them Paralyzed which is objectively better, but that costs a spell slot, which is much more limited than Ki points.
I do want to say that this is not me saying the Monk isn’t the worst class. I’m just pointing out it’s strengths.
Also, I may be a bit biased because of how well my Aarakocra Sun Soul character played. Between the speed sun bolts and the mobile feat, it was very easy to pick and choose my fights because attacks of Opportunity were a non issue due to ranged sun bolt options, mobile disallowing Opportunity Attacks on creatures you’ve attacked and being able to fly so fast no one could catch up and hit me. Only real weakness, like you pointed out, were ranged spell attacks.
I played with a Warlock and a Fighter, so I got to see just how effective Stunning Strike was with both of them.
Also, one weird niche thing is that Monks can use their Martial Arts die instead of a weapon’s normal damage and it seems some magic weapons are supposed to be balanced by their weapon type. So if you get a powerful magic weapon, but it’s a dagger, doesn’t matter, basically a long sword now.
I agree completely about the Sorcerer though. Love the class, but it kinda sucks.

Stunning strike is OK any other control spell works way more often than strike does And many of them can shut down multiple multiple enemies at the same time also If you are taking the mobile fit you are not increasing dexterity or wisdom Monks are Worse than most other spellcasters At battlefield control and they can do other things other than just control spells While monks just can't A level 5 wizard can cast Web 3 times and type and hypnotic pattern twice while a monk can attempt stunning strike 5 times Max assuming no flurry of blows These spells are better at control than Stunning strike They work more often and they work on multiple creatures

"In fact, monk isn't even my least favorite class. My least favorite class is the rogue and that's because I don't like playing rogues, I think their playstyle is boring. " and with that, you have earned my subscription, like, comment, and probably further watches in the future. Absolutely took the words right from my heart. And to anyone that can blatantly ignore the content of your video, then complain in the comments, are nothing more than angry bots mad they will only ever be forgettable NPC's in everyone else's story. If we speaking from a feature power level... yea monks got shafted. Their best and arguably worst features come online so late it isn't worth going that many levels monk when you could go 2-3 levels of ANY other class and actually gain massive boons. But I like monks for flavor, not power. If i want power, I'll play a druid, fighter, or a selfish Artificer. But I like my warlocks, and monks, and barbarians, I like my classes that are meant to do one thing then evolve and become so much more to the story than someone who hits stuff good. But man do some of the monk features need to be addressed in the One D&D content coming. Tranquility has gotta see changes, and I think to make everyone in the community ease up on monks is buff their martial arts die progression. It could be as dramatic as doubling the martial arts die, and it would not "break" anything by any means. This will also just allow the numerous features in subclasses that scale off of your martial arts die to stop sucking. and I think ki should be revisited just because it doesn't scale well at all. Even just adding your wisdom mod in ki points might be a sufficient addition.

All this proved that you hate monks. And druids. And rangers. And barbarians. And monks. And rogues, bards, wizards, paladins, fighters, monks, warlocks, artíficers, mystic, monks, sorcerer, clerics and monks. Because we all know your favorite class is the dm. This video is facade, all this "I won't hate something that's in a game that's about having fun and role-playing" but in actuality you hate everything, because you have the energy and persistence. High AC, high saving throws (which are also given to allies), spellcasting, high damage, AND very solid healing. Whenever someone plays a Paladin in a mid-level campaign, he or she singlehandedly increases the CR of my monsters by 5.

Everyone hates on Ranger but my favorite character I've played so far and the one I've had the most fun with is my Gravewalker Ranger.
We were doing the dragon of ice wind peak starting at level 1 cause it was one of the groups first time DMing and I ended up being the only martial class and I had the highest AC (even at only 17) so since I was the tank of the group I was always the closest one in combat and due to that I got knocked out in every single fight.
In one fight with a group of 4 orcs one of the party the other "tank" of a Wizard was crawling in the high grass to try something which took him three turns to do and in those three turns I was knocked out, revived to kill the one who knocked me out only to be knocked out by the one who moved to flank me. I fail one death saving throw before our Wizard finally makes his move.
He casts burning hands with me in the area and seeing that it would have killed me outright since I already had one fail our DM was nice and just bumped my DC on death saves to 11 instead of 10, but that was the last straw for our party since his character had been nothing but antagonistic and now tried to kill a party member (we had just lost our bard to a mimic so the Warlock of the party who was friends with the bard gave me a message to lure him out of town and he was jumped by the Bard players new barbarian, the Warlock, and me but thanks to a suprise magic missile and a crit from the barbarian he never even made it to my turn before he was killed.

In a game I'm in, I play an Aarakocra Monk with Way Of The Ascendant Dragon subclass. Aarakocra stacks pretty well with monk, being wisdom and dex based, as well as being able to fly with light or no armor, which also stacks with unarmored defense.
My subclass that I mentioned allows me to change my unarmed attack damage type to any of the breath weapon damage types of my choice (for each attack) as well as letting me use a sort-of breath attack move with a dex save instead of attack roll, also using any of the breath elements i want each time, and dealing damage equal to 2 rolls of whatever my current level's martial die (currently at d8, so 2d8). When I reach level 11, it'll be 3 dice, and at 17 it'll be 4.
Next, my DM gave me a pair of gloves that increase the martial die used for unarmed attacks by 1 increment (i.e. d4 to d6, or d6 to d8, etc.) The enchanter of our group is also making me a legendary enchanted version of those gloves that will not only increase the damage I do with unarmed attacks considerably, but also will have all of my unarmed attacks heal me for half of the damage I deal.
Finally, my character also likes to cook, and the DM gave my cooking a buff to where, depending on the food groups of the ingredients I use in the meal, everyone who eats it will get a +1 modifier to the relevant stats for 24 hours.
With all of that, is my bird-monk (named Selkris) not good like other monks?

The monk has the most potential single turn damage at level 20. With 20 ki point, a bunch of unarmed strikes (1d10 at that point), and a high dex, you can be a menace. You get 3 base hits, spend a ki, you get 2 more (with unarmed strike), spend 20 ki and you get 43 hits. 43 x 10 equals 430 damage and that’s before adding you dex to each hit and chance of nat 20s. Yes you’ll miss some hits but wait, if it’s up to a large enemy, you can knock them prone (only if you chose way of the open hand) and get advantage on every attack after that. The main thing against this is that you lose all your ki by the end of it but by then, you did your part.

I think Sorcerer is a better Multiclass than Wizard... But other than that there isn't much for the Sorcerer (Probably because it is CHA probably)...
I personally hate what they have done with the Monk in 5th, they need more attacks base, +1 at 11th might help but they could also do with more magic items (yes I know about the new belt (I even know about the Candlekeep Mysteries Gloves of Soul Snatching) but it is not enough) they probably needed to end on 2d8 as the Martial Arts die at level 17. Have extra attack 2 and probably something like -1 Ki point Cost at level 15 so they can flurry of blows "for free" and yes I think that there should have been more abilities that spend Ki points the current max is 7 from the base class (Step of Wind, Patient Defence, Flurry of Blows, Quickened Healing, Ki-Fuelled Strikes, Stunning Strike, Deflect Missiles) but it is not enough Deflect Missiles should have dropped the weapon part and there is probably something on every single ability the monk has that should change and I CBA to go through the rest of them.

It was a lot of fun… I just wish I wasn’t kicked from the game for not being able to make it due to abusive work conditions and shifts. Oh yeah and he had a special sword that could use spell-slots to give the weapon a X(number of spell slots)DY(Dice based on Level of spell slot used.) of any element I wanted I think excluding Force. Oh and having trained and lived in a place called the TIMELESS FOREST! He didn’t know how to read common but was taught Dragonic and Silvane. Yeah even the DM didn’t want to try to explain that lol…. I think that XPtolvl3 proposed that monk is a great class for newbies: that at different level thresholds they get abilities that force the players to change their perspective on what needs to be done in an encounter. Low level are all about the smacks, mid levels all about team cohesion, high level is all about bigger objective.
As a guy whose first 5e character was a monk I can attest that playing monk helped me figure out how to think about someone other than myself at the table. And my Roleplaying felt more enriched by it.

I do think the monk is kinda strange to use, they having so many abilities encouraging the melee combat, but then it has low AC and a d8 for Hp, I feel like the monk should have then a "parrying" ability to melee attacks as well to increase its survivability, because for sure any enemy is going to survive the whole round after you attack it since the dps is quite low too, so you should be able to withstand the blows as well.
Even with the dodge as a bonus action (which costs ki btw so it's very limited and you probably will want to blow your ki on stunning strike instead) with a low AC even the disadvantage isn't enough for the high level monsters who already have a +8 or something like that to hit.
I'm coming from the perspective that not a lot of campaigns get to high enough levels so that you would have a 20 in Dex and Wisdom yet so your AC will be lower than most armor and shield cleric who is a full spellcaster.

Lemme run this past everyone. I'm an old school player that's trying to figure things out with 5e. Okay. Character idea: Monk (shadow)7/Fighter(battlemaster)6/Rogue (assassin?)7(granting that I have at least the minimum requirements for multiclassing a human variant). Situational to dim light or darkness. Using melee weapon, battlemaster skill push attack on enemy, bonus action Shadow Step to behind enemy, action surge, battlemaster lunging attack, with advantage/sneak attack, flurry of blows. Does this track? Is this a viable combination?

the rogue sneak attack is going +4d6 once, so take out any rogue levels past 3 so you keep assassination. with your fighter levels a weapon will do more damage than your hands. take the unarmed fighting style to make that close to better (1d8 if using both hands) and the ability to use flurry. it will still be sub par, but at least usable. alternately, drow with kensai monk instead of shadow so you can use weapons and still get flurry.

@@briannelson27 that's interesting. I'm just working with the Player's handbook though and this is something I was brainstorming for a specific character I wanted to play. I'm not sure the Battlemaster skills work with unarmed attacks, unless the unarmed fighter thing makes fists count as melee weapons.
I was more trying to see if that combination of actions, bonus actions, action surge, and flurry would all work like that.

Just one correction, it damage is decent from levels 1-5, not 5-10.

Yeah by 5 it's starting to get rough. By 11 it's... It's pretty damn bad.

The monk is the best at avoiding damage because they arent seen as a threat and wont be targeted 😂
