I saw the movie the night it came out. I could not breathe when it finished. I could barely move. I came out of the theater. All the people were acting normal in the pop corn stand. I could not take it. I turned around and went back to see it again. I had no choice. Very few movies until or since then have captured my soul to the point of absolute melancholia of love.

Such a deep film, emphasising the importance of choice. We are the physical, mental & emotional product of the choices we make. As David says: "I lost you when I got in that car", It should have been a simple choice for him to say no, but he let previous experiences cloud his judgement, and it ended up ruining his chances with potentially the love of his life. An underrated work of art this film truly is...
Its underrated because it makes ppl confront their own mental demon, and rather watch it once and not recommend it to others, or consider it too complicated. Either way only the few can truly love it
@@matthewb9621 No. David died of suicide months after that night he, Sofia and their friend were leaving the club. But before that he signed a contract with Life Extension to cryogenize his body in suspended animation so that in the future the technology would allow him to be resurrected. In the meantime, he chose to dream about an alternate reality, starting from that night at the club. That's why things magically get better for him from that morning on. We are largely the product of experiences we had from ages 0-3. "A little boy's father is his fate." Free will is illusory. Choices are made based on past experience which we have no control over.
David was at a crossroads at that specific time in his life, but he actually put his choice in the hands of another when he got in her car. It is a genius movie. For every genius movie there are so many interpretations. I cry every time, when I see the roof scene, because I understand that this is THE moment when you say good bye to Perfect yet Imagined life. It is a moment of getting out of your illusions and figure out what love really means, abandon your ideals and fantasies. This movie is a masterpiece. I want to live a real life, even if I love my fantasy. It is so beautiful.

"I'm frozen and you're dead... and I love you." He said that to her knowing it wasn't her.. but she still replied. "It's a problem." It hurt me at that moment. In my chest. Honest heartache. Was that her ghost replying, there to say Goodbye? She had been dead for centuries, but here he was still in love with her. How many love stories from centuries ago are now lost to time? Moments shared that no one now knows.. This one lasted, but now only sits as a lost opportunity. It was the only movie I cried to in the cinema. A true masterpiece.

It’s crazy to think this movie will be twenty years old next month. I can’t think of any other movie (or soundtrack) that has affected my outlook on life as much as this one has
Indeed that one,What Dreams May Come, and I think about the last 38 seconds of Men In Black quite a bit too for some reason. That and how a clockwork orange is happening live right now,but I'm pretty sure they are flashy thinging us with with these phones anyway so!
I love reading comments and finding that my opinion is so widely shared about this amazing film and soundtrack! As some else put it, this is not everyone's cup of tea, but for those that can appreciate it, we get lost in its entirety.
@@stevenirizarry9427 he got in because he felt bad as she is upset but like the technical support says: "consequences, david". He had messed around Julie for too long and could never break it off because he enjoyed the attention she gave him.
At least twice a year, I finish work and know that I'll watch this movie. There's something about it that just feels me with an overwhelming sense of wonder. A truly beautiful film that will remain a timeless classic to me. Beautiful song, thank you Sigur Ros.
+Jay Avery I haven't seen the movie. But have been obsessed with Sigur Ros (Jonsi) for the past few months. I understand why this song make us cry. But find it most unique that it also make us want to change. It must be spiritual or inspirational to some degree. Jonsi has many more amazing and beautiful songs. I love his writing!!
It's that "every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around" prominent, deeply profound thought which propels the mind to try and get out of the rut the person created for it. I have built a castle out of mud around my mind or has my mind actually built that castle of mud around my mind? Caught in between life and death, eternally lost within a strange place. Waiting for someone to save me and give me purpose, but yet thinking that my sole purpose is to save someone else from the same. It's a real mind game. :-(
That's why i always say Thanks for everything I have, My family, Friends, Nature, the sky, the air, the water and more. For when all this is not there anymore, I will not have anything to regret on, I could feel the warm of my mom and dad, the good word of a friend, the sunshine in my eyes, the stars in the sky, and when my last days come I will be free to depart and find myself in paradise listening to this over and over again.
This song makes me think of my best friend Mary. The movie does as well. The first time I ever saw it, I watched it with her. I remember we both looked at each other afterwards. We both had that wow look on our face. Such a great film and beautiful sound track... My friend Mary passed away this past August. It's been rough.I am glad we made so many memories while she was here, and I'm glad that something of those memories live on through cinema and music. Miss you Mary♡
Not only was this film unforgettable the soundtrack in my opinion was incredible and somewhat underappreciated by mainstream critics. This film introduced me to Sigur Ros and for that I'am forever grateful 💙
Soulmates before we are born we are given music it played when you were born it will play when you die you were also Given colors your soulmate was also given music and colors when you and your other halve join together your music and colors join in harmony a love that will last forever
Man this song is amazing. The end of the movie makes me realize how lucky I am to be where I am now...in life. I just got married to a amazing girl.... after being a drunk for 5 years....a player...hurting people...not giving a damn about other people. Makes me wonder how I got her. Makes me want to be a better husband!
I feel the same, except I'm the lucky wife with an amazing man. I too was a drunk. Sadly he was in my life for part of that. But I probably never would have made it through without him. Actually not probably, for sure. Sometimes I wonder why he would want me. Why he puts up with all my flaws. I guess we're just blessed. He taught me what real love feels like. And I thank God for him every day. Hear is to our better halves! God bless you and your wife. And kudos for breaking away from the bottle!
Carrie Olson-Carden Ryan B I feel very strongly about this movie. makes me cry EVERYTIME .... in both happiness and sadness at the same time towards the end. both of your comments pretty much sums up how I feel too. just reading your comments made me tear a little. I wish you both a happy journey through the amazing roller coaster of life.
Ronald Holloway My father and my brother died in a violent death when I watched the movie I appreciate the time I was lucky enough to share with my brother he had just turned 22 years old and now he s dead and gone my Dad was 48 years old one day your e talking to your brother next weeks later your e picking out caskets and picking out their burial places and making funeral arrangements my life has nt been the same but I m a survivor I live on , none of us in this world should take our loved ones and friends for granted . but I feel will soon be with them in a place I can t get out and It s gonna finish me off or end my life but I held on longer than I thought I would with no support around me Suicide will do that to you
And then there's me: I always treated people with kindness and respect, never deliberately hurt anyone. And yet I'm still alone. Life works in mysterious ways. Kinda reminds me of a Watchmen quote: "It rains on the just an' the unjust alike."
+Ally White ...would rather say, saddest song in context with the movie..... "I am frozen and you are dead. We will meet again, in an other life when we are cats" Could you let your Love behind, i for myself dont know if i wouldnt stay with my wife even that shes only a dream. Dreaming of her would still be better than live a life without her, i would be lost it it would not be worth living it. T_T
There is something about this piece of music. I cant even try and explain in the comments what it is. but when I hear this song I feel it. Its everything and nothing at the same time. May we all one day understand what it is to love, live and die.
It is just soul, pain, love, emotion. And Sigur Ros know how to tap into it. Some call it depressing, sad, I call it those things at times, but it can also be uplifting and most importantly, beautiful, unlike the type of music people who call this depressing like.
Saw the movie endless times, discovered Sigur Ros because of this flick and really love the intense ending. Can't understand the moderate/negative reviews of this movie either, so much good stuff going on.
Yeah. Same conundrum for me. The vast majority of folk i know very much disliked this movie. I think it's absolute genius. Tom Cruise at his best. The music, the hidden plot, the sadness, my god it's absolutely epic. In my top 3 with Good Will Hunting and K-PAX :)
I agree. This movie holds a special place in my heart. For me, it's up there with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's the first movie adaption (from Abre Los Ojos) I've seen that's just as good as the original film and better in some ways.
This Movie has been with me since the f'g train wreck that happen in my life, never realized this song would be what carries me to the other side ... wow.
This movie is so important to me. The soundtrack is awesome. I love this song and Elevator Beat the most. I'm glad to see there are others who love this movie as much as I do.
Once every two years I will return to my indulgence, and yes I often cry but I am also always filled with a joy that never diminishes, despite knowing this film almost word for word, and perhaps because.
This song makes me happy about something I cannot have. Wanting something I cannot have should make me depressed. But this song does something magical, and does not create the depressed state.
This movie reminds me of my one true love. My one true soulmate, the one I miss so badly. I knew her only shortly, and there was nothing I could do to keep her. It makes me want to cry my eyes out.
definitely agree. Just took a recent trip to NYC and when I saw Times Square, it kinda made me think of the opening scene. I have to go back to New York in the fall and track the places they filmed it. "every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around." Great mantra, and I still believe it to this day!
The Lyrics for The Nothing Song (Njosnavelin) by Sigur Rós have been translated into 2 languages Essil on Essil on erifet al Essil on Essil on eriftel al Essil on (I travelled through light) (I travelled through light; I am not afraid) (In this lake of souls) (In this lake of souls, I lose all fear)
On the roof, his disfigured face changes when he turns and sees her. I believe our souls are healed, when we finally fall in love with someone who loves us and accepts us as we are; because we won't have to wear a mask anymore.
What he accepts is that he CAN CHANGE! And she will love him after he does. That is why he chooses a real life. To find her again when they are cats. Finding somebody that loves you for who you are is important. Finding somebody that knows you will change into something else and loves you anyway is better.
Don't know what else to say about this song/movie that everybody else hasn't said. I'll watch this movie like once a year and feel as if I watched it for the first time. The song in itself puts me in a reflective mood ALL DAY! Which isn't good at all. But I love this movie, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only person that loves this movie with a passion. Definitely a masterpiece!
This movie is so deep, so unique in its genre. Its beautiful yet sad. It makes me think about my life and situation. I fear the day my mom will be gone, as she is the only near family that i have left. After that i will be all alone in this cold world. Few people care about me, true friends can be count on only one hand. Nobody will even be there at my funeral if i even will have one. I was fortunate enough to have had a gf (now ex) who truly loved me back in the day. Most people who i love and loved me are gone, dead, from family to good friends who committed suicide. Being alive, having feelings can be so beautiful yet so painful, which this movie explains perfectly. Sometimes we wish to live in a dream world with no pain, don't we
To be honest, if your “true friends” can be counted by more than one hands then you have no idea who your true friends are. Those who you loved gave you some of the tools you need to make yourself and be strong. But I understand the pain and loneliness
Your post made me cry very long and hard. I read and reread it over 10 times. It hit me so hard because it could have been written by---me. Reading it was a very surreal experience for me. Literally EVERY detail you wrote described me--and MY life. Right down to that one, singular girlfirend who truly loved me long ago. Right down to having very few people who care about me. But most importantly, the constant, daily fear of losing my mother, who is the only person alive that now still, truly cares about and loves me. Even now, I am writing this, and listening to this song, and the tears are flowing. But I take a tiyn bit of solace in knowing that someone out there, even in the random universe of You Tube, understands my pain. Thank you.
@@petep5207 You are not alone my friend, we are not alone. I hope things will get better for us both. Lets try not to lose hope, i know its hard but lets try 🤞🏻
I wanted to agree your comment totally got me it's my life totally except for my mom has already passed. I just have my sister. That is literally it but she's married 6 states away. Yeah..! Great soundtrack for the Crescendo of the Film, but the 2nd best Poignant part has to be His Funeral, with Spiritualized's Ladies & Gentlemen, D/L the Track and give it a Full Clear Listen... You'll Love It... Peace, Love & light...
This movie is awakened in me an avalanche of emotions, essentially explains how life is unpredictable and every moment is precious and should be chosen with care, the most powerful moment in the film is when David goes to the elevator and the tech support shows him his own funeral..David and Sofia have played such a strong and touching role and provide hope for true love, but the song is so relaxing, motivating and also sad .. I wish to look at this mobie another person who will understand the true message of this movie
When David jumps and his life begins to flash before his very eyes ...... I’m not sure they could have chosen such a perfect, emotive piece of music to conclude that moment. This film will always be something special.
Esse filme é maravilhoso, sempre que atravesso alguma situação que não sei se devo seguir em frente, me lembro dele. Como uma simples decisão muda sua vida pra sempre. Nunca me esquecerei. Trilha sonora linda e a sessão de comentários só comprova tudo que senti quando assisti.
This movie has a special place in my heart. The First time i watched it i wasnt so happy and didnt understand it. But after the second watch it hit me hard. And now its one of my favorite movies ever.
Una película que llega al fondo de todo corazón que se abre a lo diferente. Sin dudas una película que siempre dejara enseñanzas en aquellas almas sensibles.
This song always brings me back home where I belong. It calms my nerves. My anxiety and fears. It makes me feel connected somehow to everything and to myself.
The first time I saw this movie, I was too young to understand it. The next time I saw it, after five years since I had first seen it, this was one of the most emotionally over-powering movie I had ever seen. I can never see love the same way I used to( in a good way). I taught me the meaning of the little things. Any one of the songs from the soundtrack, hit me the same way all the time. It helped me become more sensitive to other people, whom I loved. I love this movie from the bottom of my heart. I made so many mistakes, like everyone, but I try to better myself. Not everyone can afford to get into cryogenic sleep, to forget their dark past. As a human we need understand our importance, our effect on others & how can we improve ourselves. The same thing David tried to do, albeit in different lifespans, in his dreams mostly. Let's try to be the best version of ourselves. P.S.- All the Tom Cruise haters here because of HBO Documentary, please don't judge an actor's beliefs for the kind of movies he did. You don't know his story. He doesn't judge you for your actions. This is one of the most beautiful movie I have ever seen.
I’m only 16, and every single time I watch this movie, I feel something special, something different; because maybe I should change many issues, troubles and insecurities of my life that only affects and ends with that little percentage of happiness in my life that I feel... ✨ This is such a brilliant movie!💫 I think it deserves much more recognition, or at least none of the people in my class has seen it before.
The ending to this movie always does something to me like no other ending, I feel like it takes me back to a different time if that makes sense. This movie was a masterpiece.
This movie will never get old to me. It always feels like the first time I'm watching it. Some people will never understand but it's completely ok. My love for this film is irreplaceable.
You know, a friend of mine once told me, that when you a movie is really good, everytime you watch it, you should find something new in it. And in this one I do ☺️
Every time I hear this song I just can't stop crying thinking about all of my friends and family, and really how blessed I am, even though I can't always see it...
This movie is now the "nostalgia from an old album cover" to me, such an epic vibe that I'll never be able to let go. The final scene is unforgettable.
Thank you to everyone that posted and opened up. After all these years I hope you are all well and still fighting the fight of life. Be Blessed everyone.

Watched the movie 18 years ago, discivered this song back then, and still listen to it from time to time. 🎉❤ hope this movies and the sing never fades away for generations to come.
I'm 34 and when the movie came out I was a child, I didn't even paid attention to it, barely remember the end when David jumps out thinking all this time he committed suicide in that moment, I just watched and if I was getting out of some sort of depression this movie brought me a lot of thoughts, like some said in his comment, quoting David saying that he lost Sofia when he got in the car, sometimes we just want to preserve that glimpse of happiness in our lives and we would do anything for it, specially for love. The end was so heartbreaking for me, "but maybe in another life when we are both cats", but I prefer dogs.
I never realized there was a community of people that loved this movie as much as I do.

One of my favorite lines and part of the movie .
I just cried reading this
Rip little brother. When you died so did I...
"I'm frozen and you're dead... and I love you."
He said that to her knowing it wasn't her.. but she still replied.
"It's a problem."
It hurt me at that moment.
Thank you for explaining in such a way.

Back in the days when movies still had great soundtracks, and the vanilla Sky soundtrack, I listen to it over and over again
Cameron Crowe tends to hand-pick the music for his films. Watch Elizabethtown. It has the same kind of musical experience as Vanilla Sky.
_“One day, when we’re both cats.”_
That brief, flirty and fleeting moment blew my mind; it hit me that it was the end of something that had never begun.
It rips your heart out if you're mindful enough to catch it as it passes.

At least twice a year, I finish work and know that I'll watch this movie. There's something about it that just feels me with an overwhelming sense of wonder. A truly beautiful film that will remain a timeless classic to me. Beautiful song, thank you Sigur Ros.
I personally watch it every year, around my birthday, because it reminds me, we should always remain humble and down to earth and find our true path
This song and film move me in ways I can never fully explain every time I see it or hear this song I'm driven to tears and motivated to change
Thanks ***** :-)
right. i feel the same way.
+Jay Avery It has the same effects on me
+Jay Avery I haven't seen the movie.

And then there's me: I always treated people with kindness and respect, never deliberately hurt anyone. And yet I'm still alone. Life works in mysterious ways. Kinda reminds me of a Watchmen quote: "It rains on the just an' the unjust alike."

Axon0p62 Why does it have to be "in context?" Can't you listen outside of the box?
There is something about this piece of music. I cant even try and explain in the comments what it is. but when I hear this song I feel it. Its everything and nothing at the same time. May we all one day understand what it is to love, live and die.
It's feeling infinite. You feel infinite.
It is just soul, pain, love, emotion. And Sigur Ros know how to tap into it. Some call it depressing, sad, I call it those things at times, but it can also be uplifting and most importantly, beautiful, unlike the type of music people who call this depressing like.

Sometimes we wish to live in a dream world with no pain, don't we
❤
Thank you.

This is art.

Amazing concept and portrayal.and let’s not forget …
Love story.
I first saw it after a breakup... not recommended. 😂

One of the best movies ever made and yet so under rated
I'm 34 and when the movie came out I was a child, I didn't even paid attention to it, barely remember the end when David jumps out thinking all this time he committed suicide in that moment, I just watched and if I was getting out of some sort of depression this movie brought me a lot of thoughts, like some said in his comment, quoting David saying that he lost Sofia when he got in the car, sometimes we just want to preserve that glimpse of happiness in our lives and we would do anything for it, specially for love. The end was so heartbreaking for me, "but maybe in another life when we are both cats", but I prefer dogs.
