However riding in the dark can feel very different, even MTB trails which you know very well present fresh challenges with limited visibility. But with a little preparation and the right lights you can have a lot of fun.

    We use both on the handlebars and the helmet. Night riding is so much fun. With so many gains to be had. Night riding makes you a better rider, Old trails become new and it also extends your season. We usually just do it during the winter though, here on the East Coast. We would have to stay out past our bed time to night ride in the summer. LOL.

    I actually use three lights: one on my helmet, one on the bars, and one on the frame. The frame light is lower intensity and points down to hit just in front of the wheel. Bar light is brightest and aimed higher than the frame light.

    One of the things I take with me night riding is one of those £5 magnetic workman LED lightbars you can buy from a local petrol station that takes AA batteries. It stops you wasting trial light life if you have to fix your bike mid ride. It has a very wide beam at close distance and you can clip it to your jacket to keep your hands free to to the work.

    Night riding is soo much fun! I tend to use some hope r4s on my head and a cheaper light on the handle bars. The Exposure lights are amazing but the price point isn't.

    • @KandiKlover

      Yeah kinda ripoff and hard to replace the internal battery or upgrade to higher capacity. Plus the lights the let remote mount the battery pack are lighter on the handlebar too. Fenix makes the best one for good price.

    I've found from experimenting over the years that it's a great idea to have a flood light on the bars and a spot beam on your helmet, creates a load of contrast so you can spot holes and rocks. A few other tips I've picked up over the years:
    Have a spare emergency light (I use my commuter light) so that if you have an issue you can use that instead of eating into the runtime of your main lights. It also means you have a spare to use if you crash and damage one of your lights.
    Ride at a slower pace than you would in the daytime, not slow but not flat-out. Flow is the key to a good night ride.
    Turn off your helmet light on climbs. If it's a clear night with a bright moon you can even turn off your bar light too!
    Don't go for a ride that can take as long as your longest burn time on your lights, it's asking for trouble! Aim for double the burn time to how long you plan to be out for as a minimum.
    Get an all-in-one light if you can, they're better sealed against water and much easier to mount on the bike and helmet.
    If you have a trail centre near you ride that! It's so much more fun than in the daytime, even the blues can be amazing fun!
    There's nothing out there in the woods that isn't there in the daytime. If you hear a wild animal don't panic, it's more likely to be scared of you than attack you (depending on which country you're in obviously!).
    Always make sure the lights are charged!!
    Experiment with different light settings so that on a twin setup one light doesn't overpower the other.
    If you're behind another rider turn your lights down low as you can easily overpower their lights making their job of seeing much harder.
    Oh and if you see a strange Welshman out round the FOD or Cwmcarn at night giggling away on a bike it's most probably me!! I love dusk or dawn rides, something special about being out riding when any normal person would be in bed or curled up on the sofa.

    Make sure to have one on your handlebars and helmet. This is important because if you only have one, and it goes out, (especially if you are on a drop), can put you in some serious hot water. Also, shadows can throw off your depth perception, so be ready for anything.

  • @qwertyuiop6525
    @qwertyuiop6525 5 лет назад +1

    You should mention how having 2 lights helps with depth perception too. Like shadows from roots or gaps etc can be very deceiving with only one source of light

  • @roilev
    @roilev 5 лет назад

    I love riding the trails at night, and I LOVE the illumination from a powerful 3000lm light on my handlebar. I even put it below the handlebar (it is round and symmetrical), this way it exaggerates all the rocks and roots, so much that I improve my PRs. Having a wide beam will illuminate the exit of the turn enough so you won't hit it blind. But still the helmet light helps illuminate the exit of the corner, I just had to train myself to turn my neck more than usual (it seems I move my eyes more than the whole head). But adding a helmet light can dull the contrast of the trail, so make it point very high

    I have a couple lights that are both arounf 700 lumens, and find them entirely adequate. Actually, when the ground is covered in snow I have to turn them down to a lower setting because the light reflects back too much. A cautious full moon ride without lights can be fun too.

    The lights you talk about here are so expensive. You can buy Nestling lights with 3 LEDs from Amazon which last for more than 4 hours on full brightness for less than £25.
    My whole MTB group uses them, they're about a third of the cost of more expensive lights, they last well enough, mine are in their second winter, and none of us have had safety issues as the video suggests.

    been on one night ride with only a bar mounted 650 lumen light. It wasnt ideal, but at my low skill level (easier trails, slower speeds) it did the job. Would of been nice to have a couple hundred more lumens tho.
    It also helped that i was on a group ride, and i was able to follow more skilled riders who also had bar and helmet lights. so i could use their lights to see ahead. Worked great till they went wide and i passed them....
    still managed to stay on the trail (barely)

  • @area4race
    @area4race 5 лет назад

    Specific bike lights are super expensive. To maximise usability and spend as little as possible i use:
    on the bars: a good headlamp like a nitecore hc50/60 or to illuminate from tire to nearfield
    on the helmet: Thrunite Tn12 to chase the corners
    Both run on 18650 batterie and they last pretty much 1 houron full power. if you throttle it a bit down just by one step you get 1,5-2 h
    For me thats the way to go because you spend like 100-120Euro, AND you can use those lamps for others occasions like camping/hiking etc.
    Before you buy anything, dont get blinded by the high lumen output most devices cant hold their maximum for to long beacauce of overheating, espsecilly those 4000 lumens, they might get the output for 10 mins and throttle down to 1000. these devices are smal and can compensate the heat. 1000-1500 lumens can be obtained really long, so why buy more if you cant use it...!

    you most probably should wear the reflective jacket or vest..kind of concert staff have. It´s not only that you want to see, but you want to be seen. Also if you will transfer trough some regular road, even for little bit, it´s worthy. Stay safe.

    • @gmbn

      That's definitely a good way to be seen! There's a whole lot of commuter clothing that has significant reflection too, and they offer a much more comfortable fit. But for riding to the trails, a hi-vis vest could do fine.

    You need 1000 lumens???
    My first night ride with a friend was powered by one crappy light (maybe 15 lumens) on the bars of the rider following. Cannock was so much fun like that.
    Since it was so fun we decided to get proper lights. I use an exposure joystick from years ago. 240 is spot on. 300 lumens on my bars. Not sure I'd want anymore otherwise it would be daylight!
    I've now got my girlfriend a 500 lumen bar light and the previous gen exposure which is 1000. I guess she will be safe while I'm having all th fun!

    Don't like the two light setup I just ride with a powerful helmet light with remote battery in my pack, I find that bar mounted lights are quite often pointing in the wrong direction and are very distracting when the bars move.
    As for cheap lights that's what u have been using for years no problems and have even used them for motorcycle enduro night racing.

    The cheap "all in one" packages that I see on Amazon always give me the shudders. However, there are some really nice budget options out there.
    I bought a budget 1000 lumen hand torch that was recommended by torch enthusiast communities (like CandlePowerForums), there is lots of choice, with different models offering different Beam Widths, and different distributions of light within that beam. I got a Convoy S2+. The majority are waterproof with rubber 'o' rings to seal them, so while I wouldn't take them diving, they will cope with anything MTB'ing can offer. These types of torch don't normally include batteries. This means I was able to buy good quality Samsung 18650 batteries separately, and then a good quality charger. Then you can get a generic handlebar mount. This means the overall cost comes in at around £35-£40, which isn't super cheap, but its all modular, and far cheaper than premium brands. I can take spare batteries with me, and can also charge multiple batteries at once. So far I haven't had any failures and have been running them for 2 years.
    Depending on the brand, you can sometimes get special editions made from stainless steel etc, rather than aluminium. It doesn't make it work any better, but it looks pretty trick.

      aljowen how long does one set of batteries last on that?

    • @aljowen
      @aljowen 5 лет назад

      @@James-yy4vl On high (1000 lumens), I would put it at a bit over an hour? Maybe an hour and a half? Of course this depends on which brand of battery you buy. Most torches will dim the output brightness over time as the battery runs out, so bear in mind you will only get the peak brightness initially. The dimming happens slowly though, so that it is not visible.
      This review is *very* in depth, so if you want to know *all* of the details, knock yourself out :p
      www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?415313-Convoy-S2-measurements-(7135*8-3B)
      At the end of the day, there is only so much that an 18650 battery has to give. So a torch can either have long life but lower output, higher output with less life, or have more batteries crammed into the casing. I've no doubt that Exposures lights are absolutely lovely, but they aren't magic, hence they are still bound by the same battery constraints as any other torch with good batteries.
      If you look at the specs Exposure is quoting on the Joystick Mk13, 3100mah means they are using an 18650 battery inside, since it matches the rating of a good quality 18650 battery. Then they state that they are using a Cree XPL2 LED, the Convoy uses a Cree XML2, both quite similar but with different pro's/con's, afaik the XPL2 is brighter though.

    If there are any bikers who actually care about the environment and wildlife here is info why you should not Night Ride; "Biking in the dark.-Mountain biking in the dark (i.e., night riding), which is on the rise in protected areas, can disrupt the natural balance between diurnal and nocturnal wildlife. Consequently, night riding poses a dual threat to wildlife that exhibit diel shifts toward night: night riding can compound the pressure such wildlife experience from daytime recreational activities by increasing encounters with competitors and even further reducing the time available for foraging and breeding (Reilly et al. 2017). Night riding can also startle naturally nocturnal wildlife and wildlife that has become increasingly nocturnal to avoid daytime recreationists and other anthropogenic disturbances. Generally, temporal shifts by wildlife involve disruptions to both the shifting wildlife and to the wildlife naturally active during the time frame the shifting wildlife move into. In this way, such shifts set both groups of wildlife up for conflict and competition, disrupt predator/prey relationships, reduce feeding/hunting time and success, and disrupt breeding and other activities (Gaynor 2018). Temporal shifts can also result in spatial shifts and thus potentially cause further ecological disruptions. Thus, temporal shifts are disruptive not only to individuals, but also to com- munities, and ultimately, populations (Gaynor 2018)." 114 CALIFORNIA FISH AND WILDLIFE, RECREATION SPECIAL ISSUE 2020

    I personally prefer lights that use 18650 batteries. My main light in handlebar and the second smaller light in my helmet use the same type of batteries, I also prefer all my flashlights to use that battery type so I have always those batteries charged up and ready to go. Also batteries tend to die after years and if the light have some sort of proprietary battery system it most likely can't be changed after 5+ years if the light is still running good. I also like to carry couple extra batteries since they are easy and relatively fast to change and then If I want/need to I can run my lights on full power all the time. 18650 are also lightweight and inexpensive.
    I also prefer tight beam light on my handlebar so it do have longer reach on trails and then 10-15 meters flood light in my helmet to see better on close range.
    And what comes to lumens its been numerous times proven that those marketing 1500 numbers don't always be true and also that the high lumen number in the light is always the peak performance that it is capable of. So for example it can blast 1500 lumens for 5 minutes after the overheating circuit kicks in and lowers the power by half. And if you know anything about lights you probably know that the reflector around the light is also very important. I've seen 350 lumen lights that beat easily lights that are marketed as twice as powerful but those have bad reflectors/lens so the light is bright as fuck yes but you can't see shit with it since its like super short range flood light.
    And last but not least make sure your lights are waterproof to some level since mostly when its getting dark its also the season when weather is getting more often wet. Most lights I know are sealed with O rings but I've seen also some that are using some sort of non waterproof connector between the light and the battery pack so be careful with those.

    finding a powerful flood light for the bars is easy. I've been using Magicshines for 5 years for that, typically under $200. But for my helmet I have difficulty! I cant have a light on top of the helmet because tree branches rip them right off my head every time I've tried. YES, every time. I modified a Lenser H7R2 (300lumens) to fit on the nose of the helmet, battery on the back. It is like a fairing on the front so branches just slide over it instead of catching. It has a projector lens that makes a clean even beam and runs 4 hours on high, however I wish it was more like 600 lumens. So I am looking for another tiny helmet light that can mount on the front, and something like 500-1000 lumens - ideas? I might try the Lenser H14R2, which runs 4 hours at 1000 lumens.

    I have to disagree with placement. I use a 1600 lumen helmet light and 450 on the bars. The helmet light is bright and points where you look. The external battery goes in my backpack. I do usually turn down the handlebar light so they dont compete. With the main light on the bars I didnt feel like I could see what I needed to.
