    Andy Carlson achieves one thing almost no SD cover band ever manages to - he's got Donald Fagen's timbre and phrasing down, and got them down cold. That seems to be harder than you'd think.

    A great song choice and performed very well. Usually these types of videos (Berklee etc) sound tight and professional but feelingless. This one has the feeling - well done. (Former Lowell Tech graduate!) The vocal is really good.

    The video looks and sounds great, and the band is awesome! I hope they do more live performances. I would love to see and hear Aja performed live. So great to see UML students today getting into music that meant so much to me during my "ULowell" days in the 70's!

    I especially enjoyed what you did on the chorus when singing the part "They heard the call" on the chorus. I'm completely ignorant on music theory, but if feels like there is a "divergent" note just for the word "they" that sounded amazing.

    I went to the music school back in the late 70s (when it was known as ULowell). So proud to see this work! (Must say, however, the lead singer on Kid Charlemagne at the end is WAY off key!). Otherwise, what a pro production. Great job, kids!

    what's with the half sharp key
    did you digitize it at a slower tape speed?
    the piano player was playing some A naturals in the shots, leading me to believe it was recorded in F# minor but slowed to F half sharp minor

    • @matthewtwombly7406
      @matthewtwombly7406 2 года назад +2

      This is exactly correct, i found the tempo of the original tracking to be just a bit too fast so i expanded the track digitally thus lowering the pitch. It was recorded at 96kHz 24 bit so the upper harmonics are not distorted, just added this larger than life quality to a lot of the instrumentation which i thought was neat and fitting for the overall aesthetic, hope you enjoyed!

    Awesome. Session level from the instruments. However, and I don't mean to sound rude, there is way too much compression / limiting on the vocal track. Dial it back, re-EQ. That vocalist needs to be out front and not buried in the mix.

  • @Nostaljack

    This is predictably amateur. There are numerous timing issues (your drummer is really rushing) and the lead vocal isn't there at all. The horn arrangement isn't full enough either and it should be given the amount of players here to execute it. A couple of the chords aren't exactly on either. All the over-the-top compliments notwithstanding, the issues here could have been easily fixed and I'm not sure why they weren't. The finished product isn't there but I give credit for even trying it.
