- In this entry we’ll be taking a closer look at the mind of Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, as played by Willem Dafoe from Spider-Man (2002) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
Thanks for stopping by. If you have any feedback or suggestions feel free to let me know below!

“Strong enough to have it all. TOO WEAK TO TAKE IT!!!” 🎃 Willem Dafoe doesn’t need to be cast as The Joker. He was an amazing Green Goblin. Both fights between Tobey’s and Tom’s Spider-Man were the most brutal of all the Spidey franchise. As much as he was great in the Raimi trilogy, he took it to another level in No Way Home. The hallway fight was more suspenseful and scary than any horror movie I’ve seen in years. Green Goblin is Spider-Man’s worst enemy because not only can he fight toe to toe with him, but he’ll make it personal by attacking his loved ones.
For sure, that condo fight scene where he enjoys getting hit by Peter, most creepy moment in the MCU.
That fight scene in SpiderMan1 at the end with Goblin was one of the most visceral and brutal fights in all of Marvel
Don’t knock it till you try it bro.
The Green Goblin is not only Spiderman's greatest enemy, but also his teacher. Because being a superhero is not all sunshine and rainbows, it is a choice of responsibility and that comes with a price. The Green Goblin shows Spiderman that everyone who is close to you will always be the ones that will pay the due with their lives. In No Way Home, after the events following May's death, Peter learn with deep regret that if you loved the people so much then you must protect them by loving them from a distance. This is what I meant when I said that the Goblin is a teacher of life's hardest choices.
Wow well said, very true. Same goes for MJ and Ned, Peter was all set on approaching her but ultimately decided to back off, seeing that she was happy and safe.
I think Norman is just another victim of his own well being. In the alley scene in No Way Home, Norman actually begs the Goblin to leave him alone and smashes the mask. This shows how much pain he's in when it comes to their relationship and Norman just can't take it anymore. You could say that both Norman and the Goblin are in an abusive relationship with the Goblin being the abuser. "Coward, we have a new world to conquer. You make me sick, hiding in the shadows. Hiding from who you truly are. You can't escape yourself"!
Norman isn’t another victim of his own well being. The alley scene in No Way Home is bullshit, because Norman choose to be evil in the first live action Spider-Man movie, he didn’t care about all of the suffering he caused others.
@@trevturp6891perhaps it has been a while since you watched the original movie because he was exactly like that since the 2002 movie, did you forget the scene where he literally spoke to his darker half in the mirror? Or through the mask later on when he learnt Peter is Spiderman? The goblins being a different personality to Norman Osborne has been a part of his character since the 70s or 80s
@@TraceurHarryG1 Captain Midnight said that The Goblin was just a part of Norman's brain telling him to do the things that he knew that he wanted to do and now had the power to do anyway in his review of NWH. NWH simply made up some bullshit and contradicted not just that movie, but all of the other live action Non-MCU Spiderman Movies. F that movie.

"No good deed goes unpunished"
know what it means, it means some people will take advantage of someone's generosity and good will, but I think the green goblin meant more about people in general, that people are awful and take advantage of each others selflessness and generosity, and yet they wont feel remorse for it
It is also a continuation of the "recruitment" speech he gave spiderman in the 2002 film. "eventually they will hate you, why bother?". What he is telling Peter in no way home is that people, by and large, are scumbags... So why help them and even risk hurting yourself when you can overpower them and reign above them.
It is also strongly tied to Oscorp's fate in spiderman 2002. Osborn gave his life to that company and all that time he had been successful... Yet eventually, at the first sign of trouble, they decided to turn on Norman and remove him in order to keep moving forward. It stands to reason that his relationship with his wife was similar. She must have been after his money as he told Harry and then eventually, once she got fed up, she left. Everyone who Norman loved before he became the goblin or who he called colleague and friend... Betrayed him. So then his inner self deep down decided--- no more good deeds for anyone.
Having said all this i believe that the goblin persona truly believed that he was helping Norman as well as Spiderman. He viewed Spiderman and Norman as exceptional men... Norman had been used for his wealth and brain/influence until they didn't need him anymore and Spiderman was being used for his heroism and abilities... He wanted to help spiderman evade the fate that Norman had suffered... It is why Goblin is so happy when Tom Holland's spiderman is trying to kill him. He likes it even though he knows he is weaker and will lose... He likes it because he knows that spiderman can become like him. Whereas in spiderman 2002 he gets very angry and tries to kill Peter because Peter is remaining true to his convictions.
I think the green goblin is one of the best mcu and superhero movie villains of all time, due to him hurting Peter and trying to cause chaos.
5:50 I don't think the Goblin told Tobey "God speaks, Spider-Man", he says "Godspeed, Spider-Man" wishing him luck dealing with the glider about to kill him.
Rewatched the scene with captions, yeap you're right. All this while I thought it was the other one.
In Maguire's Spiderman, both Osborne and Octavian are classic examples of the Shakespearean concept of the decent man with the fatal flaw.
Both had too much confidence.
In Octavian's case, he wanted good.
In Osborne's case, his desire to increase his business.
Both legitimate.
But their confidence that they could control what they were doing was their undoing.
His name is Otto Octavius...Octavian is an Roman emperor 👍🏼
@@raul88.88 Fair enough.
I would blame autocorrect, but it has been a while, and I can't rule out the possibility that I just screwed up.

My Top 3 The Best Green Goblins
1st Willem Dafoe
2nd Dane DeHaan
3rd James Franco
Be said “Godspeed”, not “God speaks”
Norman Osborn is another stand up guy that I like in the spiderman movies because his quotes for life are FACTS everytime he drops them 🔥.
He had a personality disorder at first he tested the enhanced serum that wasn't stable enough lead him of greed and misguided he caused a wrongful death on himself he even killed May parker Peter 2 looks for a cure prior to the duel he stop the main parker from doing the same fate from the beginning his life changed when cured.
The darker side took over his mind and convinced other villains to betray Parker and destroyed the box causing the mutiverse to collapse.
I'm somewhat of a villain myself.
Gaston from the live action beauty and the beast
Damn you got what you wanted haha
In the 2001 Jekyll and Hyde musical:
*The council:* You are out Jakyll.
*Mr. Hyde:* ...Out am I?
Great video please do a video on other spider man villains like sandman , venom , electro , the lizard , shocker and doc ock
Love your videos!
Green Goblin= Classic psychopath☠️
I always loved Green Goblin from the comics and I thought William Dafoe did a great job playing him in the Raimi films (Earth-96283) and the Variant of him (Earth-TRN925) that was transported to the MCU (Earth-199999). I hope we get an MCU Green Goblin in the future. Can you do a video on Green Goblin from the canon Marvel Universe (Earth-616).
Can you do one on otto octavius (doctor octopus) please.
😉 i thought this video was going into a deeper analysis of the mental state of the villain using more medical terminology but that okay
Do William Stryker from the men
The x men
“In spite of everything you’ve done for them, eventually they’ll end up hating you.”
Why does that line have to be so true!?!😭
1:10 LMFAO
Pinhead from the hellraiser films ( Doug Bradley version) the Version in the 2022 reboot film would be nice as well. Or the Hellpriest from the Novels.
0:13 say that again
I always liked Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn. But his Green Goblin was a little too ridiculous for me in _Spider-Man_ (2002); mainly due to that stupid mask.
But when he got his 2nd chance at the role in _Spider-Man: No Way Home,_ they did the best thing they could've by smashing that stupid mask and he just relied on his own facial expressions, which I personally thought made him scarier.
This actually a pretty well-written analysis of the character, with a lot of good points that illuminate aspects I hadn’t considered before.
However, the narration is a bit problematic for me personally. I suspect it’s AI, which, if so, is actually better than most. Unfortunately it’s still pretty lifeless and stiff, which becomes grating after a few minutes.
If this is the case - a writer using an AI voice to bring their thoughts to life - I would suggest reading the scripts yourself, or bringing a friend on board to record the script for you. There is a lot of potential here,. I’d just like to see it thrive.
I’m glad to hear you found something insightful. I do empathise with your feedback on how the voiceover may be a turn-off.
You’re somewhat right, the scripts are written by me but they are actually narrated by a human. To no fault of his though, I think it’s harder to inflect emotion when you’re completely unfamiliar with the subject matter.
he's not "marvel's jekyll and hyde" in his definitive incarnation.
Agreed, perhaps MCU might be more accurate. Good observation.
@@inthemindofavillain Yeah that title would belong to bruce banner and the hulk
Goblin>venom
Can we just ignore the Disney amrvel verison since he isn’t the same Norman from Sam Riamis film anyway . People forget that
