Welsh people (Cymro) are the native Brythonic inhabitants of Britain, Cymro include the modern day Welsh, Cornish, Cumbric and Bretons. The term Welsh came from Anglo-Saxon invaders and stems from the term "Wehl" which meant Stranger/foreigner/Brythonic slave similarly Wales comes from "Wehlas" meaning Land of foreigners/strangers/Brythonic slaves.
The term "Cymro" is used when referring to Brythonic people as it means "fellow countryman" similarly Wales is called Cymru in Welsh which means "Land of fellow coutrymen".
After the Romans pulled out of Britain the Brythonic peoples had about 1000 years of constant conflict against Gaels, Picts, Anglo-Saxons, Normans and Danes (Gaels, Picts and Danes raided the Welsh coast for a time) The Anglo-Saxons pushed the Brythonic peoples West during their invasion some migrated to Northern France in a place that is now called "Brittany" many others just settled in Wales and Cornwall, Wales consisted of many Brythonic Kindoms but in my opinion the most important two were Gwynedd (where the red dragon on green field originates from) and Deheubarth (responsible for creating Welsh law and defending Wales from the Norman invasion until the sons of Gwynedd attacked them). As a direct result of this conflict Wales has numerous battlefields and castles (look for a map of the castles within Wales).
England in Welsh is "Lloegr" which means "the lost lands" similarly Northern England is called "Yr hen ogledd" which means "The Old North"
In the 13th century the English occupied Wales, built some castles to keep them down and brought in immigrants to replace the Welsh peasantry in an attempt to make the area loyal to England, despite this Welsh people continued to fight them throughout the 14th century through various revolts but namely a man named Owain Lawgoch (Owain the red hand) had been preparing an invasion to retake Wales after raising an army of Castillians, the English however sent an assassin to befriend and kill murder him. In the Late 14th century - early 15th century another man named Owain Glyndwr started a largely successful uprsising in which various Cymro returned to Wales to aid in the fighting, the French king also sent some knights to aid in the conflict. The uprising ultimately failed as the French king went mad and the French knights were recalled to France and most of the Experienced Welsh fighters had been killed the uprising ended with the English cutting off supply routes and taking Harlech caste, despite this Owain continued to raid English settlements but this was on a far lesser scale.
After Henry Tudor (whos father was born to an English queen after a Welsh noble impregnated her) became king by slaying King Richard III many Welsh people saw him as a Welsh king and the revolts ceased to exist, Henry had intended to keep England and Wales seperate, however, after his death his son Henry VIII wanted central control so abolished Welsh law and created "the laws of England and Wales"
Thats some Welsh History for you
