    Thanks for the video Lance. Just for keep things simpler, is possible to install directly Monterey using a usb thumb created with OCLP and then don´t build and apply OCLP patches but put the Martin Lo EFI in the 1st bay hd. Then a PRam reset just for be sure to not confuse OC with OCLP nvram things (with this method is possible to install directly also Ventura and Sonoma). Otherwise you can create a Monterey thumb with the createmedia command from terminal and then write the Martin Lo EFI folder on the thumb efi partition. Tested both method!

      @MacSoundSolutions  3 месяца назад +3

      @@MyGeogywhen it comes to the Mac Pro 5,1 Martins runs Mac OS natively it does not hack the OS by installing patches into the OS, OCLP is fine as well but it’s for all different Mac models and patches the OS to get things working, like graphic drivers Bluetooth Wi-Fi etc. you can install Sonoma with OCLP and Martins only goes to Monterey but there are many apps the Mac Pro 5,1 will not work with in Sonoma because of AVX2 instructions are not supported by the Xeon possessors. So if you want to run Monterey on a 5,1 Martin’s might run a bit better and allows you to boot back into Mojave the last native OS for the 5,1, OCLP does not support Mojave.

    Hey Lance, FYI, after following your EnableGOP video on my 5,1, I finally moved from OCLP to Martin Lo's version. Sure enough there was something in it that OCLP didn't have that allowed my McFiver's 10G ethernet to work really well. I have a 10G fiber connection in my home with 10G routers and one 2.5G router. But with the OCLP, the ethernet only would get a little over 1G speeds. Now with Martin Lo's OC I got close to 6,000Mbps up and down on the direct 10G ethernet connection, but also still close to 2,500Mbps on the 2.5G router so it works really well. Oddly even the Sonnet 10G external thunderbolt adapter I use on my Mac Pro 2013 only gets 2,000~3,000Mbps on the direct 10G line. But I wanted to ask you, in one of your videos, I can't remember which one, you said that there was an issue with the McFiver. Some thing that I had to be careful about? When installing or reinstalling or else something else I can't remember. Can you think of what that might be?

    • @MacSoundSolutions
      @MacSoundSolutions  3 месяца назад +2

      I think it’s just the fact that EnableGOP doesn’t play nice with the McFiver when holding the option key on boot to force the Apple bootloader before opencore loads. So if you need to use EnabkeGOP to boot into an older supported Mac OS without opencore you need to pull the opencore drive and just boot like normal like into Mojave and you will get the Apple bootloader. Thanks for posting your findings.

      You should be able to use a non Mac 580 but it needs to have an unmodified rom ie original rom or you might run into issues, also you will need to boot into recovery mode to turn off SIP, you should be able to just hold command R immediately after you hear the boot chime and it will take quite a while maybe 3 minutes for the recovery I don’t see anybody screen to show up, but then you can get into the terminal and disable sip.

    Nice refresher! I've got a somewhat unrelated question: what if I need to reset the NVRAM? Some people seem to say that it will wreck the OpenCore installation. Others disagree. The reason I want to do that is because my auto dark mode has started to misbehaved: dark mode does not trigger in the evening anymore, and I thought I should give it a go to the magic NVRAM reset!

    • @MacSoundSolutions
      @MacSoundSolutions  2 месяца назад +1

      To me that doesn’t sound like a pram reset would fix that, it might be better to re install the OS, but maybe switch off dark mode reboot, turn auto on again and see if that fixes it. Pram reset can unbless opencore, but you could pull the opencore drive then do a pram reset and put it back in, that should work, but again don’t think it’s going to fix your issue.

    This is awesome timing as I was just looking for the correct way to do Martin Lo's OC on my 5,1. Thanks! BTW, I know there must be a reason, but I can't help wondering why the edits to the config.plist, which returned everything to normal state at the end through a drag-n-drop, why doesn't Martin Lo just have two versions of the file in his package, one for "installing" and one for returning to normal state - so that both can be drag-n-dropped. Seems like it would be easier.

    • @MacSoundSolutions
      @MacSoundSolutions  3 месяца назад +1

      Good point and yeah it would be easier but every updated package would need it yet the config.plist has to be named the config.plist so you would have to rename it and that could cause more confusion. Plus one should learn how to get around the config.plist to make changes like adding thunderbolt set to “true” if you have a thunderbolt card etc.

      Yes I’ve been using OCLP on my 5,1 to install Sonoma but Martin Lo does not patch the OS so it has been reported that the Mac Pro 5,1 runs best, fastest with Martin Lo but it might not be a big enough difference. • @a_mouse6858
    @a_mouse6858 3 месяца назад +2

    Lance, can you summarize the principle motivation for using Martin Lo's preconfigured EFI vs. just using OCLP? (assuming Monterey). Is this just a matter of familiarity, or is there a compelling technical advantage in your system? One thing I like about the OCLP approach (for the 5,1 anyway) is that it leaves the system seal in place, so Apple Software Restore still work for bootable backups. Is that also true with Martin Lo's package?

    • @MacSoundSolutions
      @MacSoundSolutions  3 месяца назад

      I have a video explaining the differences but Martin’s does not “patch” the OS it runs Mac OS natively where OCLP modifies the OS like patching graphics cards drivers, legacy Bluetooth and WiFi cards etc. So Monterey should run a tad quicker on the 5,1. Opencore largely patcher is a one size meets all, where Martins is tailor made for the 5,1. It was also out way before OCLP to a hardware video encoding. OCLP has come a long way and makes the install process easier. And I used Martins since Catalina came out and it never failed me.

    • @MacSoundSolutions
      @MacSoundSolutions  2 месяца назад +1

      That’s only referring to placing opencore on sata bay 1 instead of on a NVMe. Makes for quicker boot times, the system can be on the NVMe and yes that is faster but better to have opencore installed in bay 1, it does not need to be installed on the system / boot drive.

    • @davidgordon9180
      @davidgordon9180 2 месяца назад

      @@MacSoundSolutions That’s very interesting Lance. So, the system only needs to see one OC EFI folder installed somewhere, wherever? Why is OC itself faster via SATA?

    • @MacSoundSolutions
      @MacSoundSolutions  2 месяца назад +1

      Yes you only want one install of opencore and it is best on sata bay one just because that is where the Mac looks for the system first so it sees opencore first and loads the bootloader, opencore is just a bootloader, after you select the boot drive it’s done.

      You can’t have auto update on as you unfortunately found out, always check the OCLP site before doing any Mac OS updates when your running OpenCore. Sounds like you have to boot up off an old OS drive and re install opencore and your system. You have to go back to a Mac OS version supported by your Mac, backup your data first if you haven’t already.

    Hey Lance, thanks so much for this ! As a fellow audio nerd whose 5,1 is still comfortably fast enough for almost everything, I now need to upgrade to try the latest versions of Wavelab, RX and other apps.
    It's my work machine though so I can't afford to mess this up (!) so I'm looking for the safest possible route. My 5,1 currently has a RX580 card with Mojave, so it seems form your video as if I can avoid the risk of EnableGOP and just follow this procedure to install to a new drive, is that right ? Worst case I'll mess something up and have to start again, but I can just remove the new drive and boot to the Mojave disk again at any point ?
    It would be great to get confirmation of this, or I've missed any possible gotchas - also you mentioned in another video that you don't recommend installing OpenCore to the boot drive, please can you explain why, or maybe there's another video I should watch ?
    Thanks again !

    • @MacSoundSolutions
      @MacSoundSolutions  Месяц назад +1

      You need to turn off SIP to install opencore. Is your 580
      Flashed for Mac, ie you get the boot screen? If not you will have to put in an old Apple GPU to turn off SIP. You can install opencore on the drive you want to install Monterey on it’s not a problem. Leaving your Mojave drive intact and you will still be able to boot off it. So turn off sip out a new drive in boot back into Mojave, install opencore on your new drive, then install Monterey on the new drive, then use apple migration utility to copy all your data from Mojave to Monterey. Boot into Monterey. You can leave both drives in or pull the Mojave if you want. You can move the Monterey drive to bay 1 if you want or maybe you are installing it on a NVMe? It’s better to not install opencore on a NVMe if that’s where your installing Monterey you can put opencore on the Mojave drive there is no risk in doing that or another sata ssd. 16 gigs is kinda low Inwoikd get up to 48 at some point but if you see your not maxing out the ram then you don’t need to get more but it’s cheap
      enough.

    • @ProductionAdvice
      @ProductionAdvice Месяц назад

      @@MacSoundSolutions Thanks for the quick reply ! The 580 isn't flashed, I don't think (can't use Alt to select boor drive) so to make sure I understand: with the old GPU I can just use Recovery mode to run Terminal and disable SIP, is that right ? Because I don't think Mojave will work with the old card. Or can I use Recovery Mode & Terminal with the 580 ? Either way once SIP is disabled I can put the 580 back in and carry on from there ? Both installs will be on SSDs, not NVMe. And just checking - you're saying I can put OpenCore on the current Mojave SSD, then install Monterey to the new disk ?

    • @MacSoundSolutions
      @MacSoundSolutions  Месяц назад

      @ProductionAdvice you need a boot screen to disable sip. you won’t get the boot screen with the 580 you have to put your old card back in and you should be able to at least get video with Mojave out of one port of the graphics card. It will be very laggy but good enough to get sip disabled in recovery mode then you can put the 580 back in and install open core on your Mojave Drive or install it on the drive. You’re gonna put Monterey on.

    • @ProductionAdvice
      @ProductionAdvice Месяц назад

      @MacSoundSolutions Thanks again - having re-watched the start of the video I think I've misunderstood. I don't have the boot *menu* any more (hold down Alt, choose which drive to boot from) since moving to Mojave, but I *do* see the grey screen with black Apple logo and black progress bar as shown in your video - is that the boot screen ? In which case I don't need the swap back to the old GPU (I can currently already use Command-R to get to recovery mode using the 580, and access Terminal, disk checker etc)

    I’m trying to get my apple thunderbolt dispay to work with my Mac Pro 5.1. i already did a lot to this thing. I bought a flashed GC Alpine Ridge to enable thunderbolt on my mac pro, with success. But somehow my Titan Ridge does not give any video output to not only my thunderbolt display, but also a standard monitor. I connected the Alpine Ridge to both my apple flashed Geforce GTX 680 and Radeon RX5700, but without success. Tried it on native MacOS Mojave and OCLP Monterey.
    So if i look in “System information” under Thunderbolt” i can see that the thunderbolt does recognise the thunderbolt display, but if i go to “graphics/displays” it wont show the thunderbolt display. Very weird. Can anybody help me?

    • @MacSoundSolutions

      You need to change "true" from "false" in the Opencore confiig.plist under thunderbolt near the top of the list and hit save and reboot if you have not done those things already. You then need to cold boot and reboot then plugin the monitor and it should show up.

      You most likely have to pull the opencore drive and start over, see if you can boot into Mojave. If opencore is not installed correctly with Monterey you can wind up in a boot loop, and always check the GitHub site to make sure the version of OCLP you are using is intact compatible with your Mac Pro and GPU. Martins package is only for the 5,1 and that’s one reason I prefer it. I would maybe first try to re install Opencore Legacy patcher before starting over with Mojave if you have a bootable usb installer.

      What OS are you currently on? Are you installing an OS or just want to switch opencore, I think you can just replace the boot and OC folders and rebless opencore, but make sure SIP is off, you should get a warning from the bless opencore app telling you if SIP is enabled or that it was successfully blessed. I would not do the pram resets because that will re enable SIP. If you upgrade the OS to Monterey you have to do the config.plist edits once you have replaced Opencore folders and blessed the drive Opencore is on. So boot up, replace folders, bless. If SIP is on you will have to boot into recovery to turn it off which means doing the whole install process.

    Whelp... I'm in desperate need of help lol. I went to PRAM Reset, only chimed once, continued to hold down key combination until my hands started cramping (maybe ten minutes total?) And now I can't even get the computer to boot, just replaced the battery and fingers crossed.

      Hold down command option p and r using a wired keyboard before the first boot chime and let chime a second time it should only take ten seconds. You will need a Mojave boot drive and an original Mac GPU to get booted again to install opencore.

      @@MacSoundSolutions Yeah, that's what I tried, unfortunately never got a second chime, now I can't even get a single startup chime even after reinstalling all original components. I have both a factory Mac GPU as well as an nvidia that is properly flashed. What's crazy is I got all the way up to Mojave install with maxed ram and upgraded gpu, ran great, but after trying PRAM Reset to start your (well explained) instruction video

      I would try pulling some of the ram, especially the last ones in slot 4. Check to see if any lights are lit on the logic board when you try and boot, take it down to just two sticks of ram, if it’s till won’t boot it could be you have a corrupt bot rom, and might need a reconstruction, in that case I would get on Mac Rumors and chat with tsialex

      @@MacSoundSolutions I really appreciate your responses! I did do some of the led DIAG tests, thankfully nothing out of the ordinary (if I was reading instructions correctly) and I did end up pulling ram out until I had only two sticks in before calling it quits for the night. Hey, thanks for the video...I see your power cable for the GPU comming from behind that fan. Is it just routed that way from the two connectors on the motherboard or is it connected somewhere else? I have problems with power for my gpu (bought from dqupgrades). As a solution I have the one to 8 pin from the motherboard and the 6pin powered via a sata to power cable, but still don´t have enough power it seems... . So now I´ve ordered a dual sata to 6pin power, in the hope to have enough combined with the one on the motherboard. But doing so I lose two sata connections ofcourse... . Elaborate question maybe, but if anyone could help... . Thx!

      It helps to say what GPU you have? But I have done the Pixlas mod, check “the house of moth”video here on RUclips. You basically tap power direct off the PSU giving power hungry GPUs enough power. It is a bit of a pain to do but parts are cheap.

      well you could flash the original rom back to the 580. You loose boot screen but you have it with opencore. Most likely Sonoma does not like a modded rom. it should be the original un modded version.

      also check your config.plist edits to make sure they are correct, maybe replace it with the original from martin's package and do the edits again.
