In 2007 I was flying home from LA upgraded to First Class & this guy gets on in a white T shirt & blue work pants and sits next to me. Being much older (57 at the time) I did not know who Ryan Gosling was. He sat next to me & we chatted for 6 hours & he told me he was an actor. I admitted I never heard of him & he was cool with that. Ryan is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. Down to earth, humble & extremely talented. When we landed in Newark, he was on his way to Manhattan & offered me a ride but I was going the opposite way. I thanked him, exchanged numbers & that was it. When I got home, I had a copy of “Fracture” which I had purchased weeks earlier but not watched. I looked at the cover & there was his picture along with Anthony Hopkins. He’s the real deal & it was my real pleasure to meet such a nice guy. The rest is history.....what you watched was Ryan playing the piano which he learned to play in just 4 months.....amazingly!!! No wonder this movie won so many Oscars.

I love the way you put that idea. Yes, the visuals are really precise in portraying the feelings that the director meant to transmit, just like how it happened in the Ratatouille example. What a nice way to see the relation that exists between visual and meaning!
The song is their love story. The first part is slow but melodic, like when the meet. Then it picks up and it still is pleasant. But it builds and becomes chaotic. It has a moment of cohesion then it ends abruptly

Does anyone find that music like this brings back memories? I’m originally from LA, but in the ‘90s my family moved out of California. I’d go back and visit often to stay with my grandma. My grandma and I were very close. When she passed away at the age of 94 I mostly stopped visiting LA after that. She was such a light in my life. Years later, I’m married and live in the UK. I hear this song from this movie and it’s like I go into a trance. The times in the pool, the times laughing, playing card games around the table, driving down the 5 Freeway, Disneyland, going to Seal Beach. This song makes me wish more than anything that I could have a time machine. Even for just 1 day.
I rewatch this scene at least four times daily, honestly it couldn't have been filmed in a better way. everything about this scene is absolute perfection.

Same. But mine goes a little deeper back to my ex in college and all I could think about was the good times with her and how I wish it would have worked out all while I was with my current girl (now ex) at the movie theater. I walked out of the movie with her and couldn’t think straight from all of that and because of how great the movie and music was.

Andrew Wang firstly, the notes are correct as I can play the piece. Secondly, the audio may indeed be enhanced to some extend - if you really want I will link the article
@Andrew Wang You are trolling there son. "Watch closely at 1:40 when he plays the octaves". You are using the wrong term here boy. He is playing what anyone who knows grade 1 theory as CHORDS! If he were playing the chords at octaves he would be moving his hands much further down the keyboard. (As anyone with the basic knowledge of a piano knows there are 8 octaves on a piano). You keep using the term octave incorrectly which shows your lack of intelligence or you are simply trolling for who knows why! Octaves are 8 notes yet you name notes that are a semitone or a tone apart. You owe Ollie an apology for calling him a liar. He, obviously, knows 100x more than you pretend to know about music boy.
i love how it starts so slow and gentle, how it replicates that bitter-sweet longing for a past love, and how when he tries to progress the melody, it morphs into a more jazzy rune, which sound like the embodiment of his inner turmoil which isnt known if its anger or frustration toward himself, his ex, or a strange mix of both, and how as it sailed as two melodies dancing in unison, ended with both parting ways in an abrupt manner
This is amazing!! This comment won’t take that off of Ryan Gosling, he is an incredible actor and being able to learn most of this in 3 months is supernatural. Although I’ve been training this piece and that last part is so difficult! I couldn’t imagine nobody playing that with just 3 months of experience with no errors at all, perfectly played! And I figured out it wasn’t. In the last sector (1:39) of the octaves, his fingers in the octaves don’t match at all the real ones. If you play it you’ll understand. I’m just relieved to know that I’m not a looser for not being able to play this perfectly, having played for over 10 years (as an hobbie) and then somebody comes with just 3 months and voilá! Glad to know we’re all humans 😊 and Ryan is definitely an outstanding one, even if he doesn’t play this perfectly in 3 months unlike everybody was saying.
