Even against more modern first-person shooters, Goldeneye 007 is my favorite. Something about the aiming controls and the way enemies react to getting hit makes it feel punchier than any other I’ve played. In Halo, for example, it feels more like you’re melting aliens with a heat gun. It’s hard to even tell if your shots are hitting sometimes.

While I respect the N64 for revolutionized 3D gaming, most of there games have age. Not all of them. But an good chunk of them. And they are overhyped for getting to much praised they get. The 2 games that I considered the most overrated ones is Banjo-Kazooie & Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Banjo-Kazooie is just an bigger & overwhelming version of Super Mario 64. I do like that once you get the main mcguffin, you can continue to other missions for that and not get boot out of the level to pick an mission like Mario 64 did. I'll give it that. But besides that, I found every level an little too big & the amount of collectables you have to progress is absurd. What's even worst is that if you die, you have to collect the music notes all over again; which I heard was fixed in the 360 version. But still. That's dumb. I also found controlling Banjo & Kazooie way too wonky. I never played Tooie and some might argue it's better. But others say it's worst. So I don't know and I don't care.
As for Ocarina of Time, oh boy! Where do I begin? Often considered to be the greatest game ever made is an farfetch. Don't you think? Now look. I can see how this & Super Mario 64 help influence the franchise and video games in general and in such, I respect that. But for Ocarina of Time specifically, I'll never understand the praise it gets. I found the world of Hyrule way too big & empty. There's no variation or anything that's happening and traveling through the world is an slog cause Link has no items for something to speed up. Not even Epona I feel can go fast enough. Traveling through many areas in Hyrule is an chore. I also think the dungeons are the weakest in the series. Mainly because there an total pushover with no complex, clever puzzles, challenge & uniqueness it offers. The only ones I found decent is Inside Deku Tree because of it's traverse progression & Spirit Temple because you can be both Young & Adult Link in the same dungeon and was pretty clever of it's design. The rest were bland & boring; like Dondongo Cavern & Fire Temple and there are others that I found obnoxious & tedious to progress like the Forest Temple, Water Temple especially and Shadow Temple. The inventory are very situational and only use in that dungeon you get. And the bosses are an pushover. The story is ok. But I care less about the characters or worlds that's happening cause they don't have anything about them that I can relate. And lastly in terms of the structure & layout, this game is A Link to the Past in 3D. The story about gods & the Trifoce, go to the first 3 dungeons, get the Master Sword, go to bigger dungeons where there more challenging, you know how it is if you played A Link to the Past before. At least with Super Mario 64, it was trying to be it's own thing and wasn't trying to be like Mario 3 or World in 3D. So yeah. That's my hot take on OoT. I respect the game. But no way is it " the greatest game ever made " as alot of people bring up.

Quest 64 seems properly rated to me, a fun experience but pretty middle of the pack. Mario, Starfox and MK 64 I would say are still great to this day so I disagree there. The one that I do agree with though is DK64. Found myself to be pretty underwhelmed with that one. I would have to play it again though. Fun video as always! I appreciate hearing people's opinions on games and there's nothing wrong with going against the grain if a mainstream game didn't really "do it for you." I used to talk about how The Legend of Zelda on the NES was one of my favorites until I started being honest with myself and admitted that Zelda 2 is far better in my personal opinion. Still like the original, but the sequel tickles my fancy way more than the first one ever could.

Actually Goldeneye being number one among the most overrated N64 games makes a lot of sense. This game is so fondly remembered yet it's spiritual successor perfect dark which was also a great success in its own right Is a far better game and an improvement in every conceivable way. But people don't really talk about perfect dark that much at least in comparison. Don't get me wrong I grew up in the '90s and played a lot of N64 and I loved playing GoldenEye especially on the multiplayer but perfect dark has way more features for its multiplayer and it has just a much better campaign as well. Not to mention a co-op campaign and of course something that I don't think I've ever seen since or before which was the counter op campaign which which is to play the missions of the campaign with one person being the hero Joanna Dark and the other person being one of the enemy soldiers trying to take her down. Also having the same disadvantages of the regular soldiers by AI that have less health. You killed a person who controls a soldier and then they spawn taking the place of another soldier. It's a lot of fun!
I don't agree with you about Kirby 64 especially since I've never had any issues with the controls in that game. I think kirby64 is a lot of fun and for a long time it was among my top two or three favorite Kirby games ever made. Up there with Kirby Superstar on the SNES, but to be honest Kirby games have actually gotten even better over the 2010s then how good they already were in the 1990s. Kirby's return the dreamland, Kirby triple deluxe which had been my favorite Kirby game for quite some time, and of course Kirby planet robobot. And I know a lot of people weren't in love with Kirby star allies but I thought that game was pretty awesome too. And someday I will play through more of Kirby and The forgotten land and beat that because that's awesome.

@@Fortefyre Yeah Kirby is a pretty huge franchise. I'd say it only slowed down a bit in the 2000s and I wouldn't even say it slowed down by that much. The issue is there weren't any console main series games. The only console Kirby game I could think of in 2000s of side from Kirby 64 would be Kirby's air ride. But of course the GBA and the DS had several Kirby games back then so that made up for the lack of console ones. Although one of the reasons why there was a lack of console curvy games at the time was because there was a Kirby game that was being made for the GameCube that You should still be able to look up some footage of right here on RUclips because I remember seeing footage of like some demos of this game way back in the late 2000s, but ultimately that game was never released and got repurposed into becoming Kirby's return to Dreamland on the Wii in 2011. And then after that they're just kept being a whole bunch of other Kirby games like there used to have been so many released in the '90s

I don't disagree with you or you list...
    ...BUT...
I grew up on the NES. Most NES games are hit garbage compared to anything that came later, unless you ignore a lot of problems, like bad graphics, bad translations, bad plots, etc etc. So when I see someone talking about "overrated" I usually take it with a grain of salt. Is Dragon Warrior great because it simplified and streamlined RPGs? Absolutely. Does that sales total and ongoing series and spinoff make it the best game ever made? Absolutely not. But, if taken as a product of its time, and compared to similar things that were new simultaneously, that's kind of how I measure games compared to one another. People say Dragon Warrior is 10/10 and people say it is awful. I can see that both arguments have merit. I like it, but there's absolutely room for improvements, and in the last several decades, they cleaned up most of my issues with the original in subsequent games. But I can't compare the original 1988 game with the newest title, because there's no real comparison.
And for all the praise I heap on Dragon Warrior (now Dragon Quest, world-wide) I fully support calling it overrated, because everyone talks about it, and everyone always says the same thing.
And the 1 thing I would have changed on your list is swapping out DK64 with Smash Bros. DK64 had a *TON* of hype when the N64 was better than sliced bread, but I honestly didn't think it ever had an actual release. Smash is basically part of common knowledge and if that's not overrated well I don't even know what is.

I disagree with Mario 64… I had fun with it to the very end, as a teenager and again years later as an adult. Pretty much everything else I agree with though.
Goldeneye was ok at best. My friends would play it endlessly to the point that I would just want to smash the cart. I do respect it as a pioneering game in the genre, but i don’t actually like the FPS much anyway,. So to me it’s just an average game from an awesome movie franchise.
Oh yeah… Quest 64 is a complete abomination. The most disappointing thing for me about the N64 was the lack of RPGs. Quest 64 did nothing to fill the void. Idk who in their right mind would rate the game as anything more than garbage not even worth playing. This list had me scoffing A LOT. We must have different definitions of overrated. It seems like you're forgetting about how games exist within their own times. Mario 64, GoldenEye, Srar Fox 64... they all really pushed their genres forward at the time they existed and were a blast to play when compared to what was out at the time. Sure, they have been surpassed as others have stood on their shoulders. But going back NOW and not enjoying a game as much as you did back then only means the game doesn't hold up as well under more modern standards. Not that it was overrated. This video has a lot of entries that sound like saying the first fans were overrated in light of the existence of AC units. Would i prefer AC now? Hell yeah. But it makes little sense to dismiss what came before it.

Quest 64 has never been overrated by anybody. The rest of these are not overrated at all. The problem is probably that you're judging these games by modern standards which is totally unfair. You definitely did that when talking about GoldenEye. You have to judge a game for it's time. I would also point out that while GoldenEye was definitely the start of the FPS era for consoles, FPS games were a big deal on PC since the early 90's. There were FPS games on consoles before GoldenEye, and there were FPS games on PC before the early 90's, but they were few and the genre hadn't taken off in popularity yet.

@StarlightMirror I agree. I found OoT way more overrated than SM64. Sure. Mario 64 has it's problems. But at the very least it was short and you don't have to do everything to complete the game. OoT is an absolute chore. Hyrule is way too big & empty, there's barely anything happening around it, the progression is very slog and you don't have an item to speed up like the Pegasus Boots or Bunny Ears ( even Epona isn't all that fast ) the dungeons are some of the weakest in the series mainly because they weren't very unique; having complex & challenge and some like the Forest, Shadow & especially the Water Temple are very obnoxious & tedious, the inventory you get in dungeons are very situational and is worthless afterwards, I barely had any interest in the characters, the game can be an pushover and in terms of the structures & layouts, it's an complete ripoff of A Link to the Past and I think that game & Majora's Mask are better than this.

    • @StarlightMirror
      @StarlightMirror 3 месяца назад

@jaretco6423 Someone else who likes Majora's Mask more than Ocarina of Time? Heck yeah! And I agree with everything you said, OOT is basically just a 3D Link to the Past Imo, and the overworld is just so vast and empty. Link moves so slow in it, it's still a great game(better than Botw and Totk) but it's not the best game ever like a lot make it out to be either.

    • @jaretco6423
      @jaretco6423 3 месяца назад +1

@StarlightMirror Yeah. But I will say that without OoT being successful, we wouldn't have Majora's Mask. So I can appreciate it and I respect the game for how influential it was. Well, with the exception of Mario 64 and Goldeneye, I actually did find myself agreeing with the vast majority of the list.
Stadium? I honestly think more folks will agree with you on that one nowadays thanks to NSO adding it in and making it half the game that it is thanks to the lack of GB Pokémon titles and what seems to be an unwillingness on the part of Nintendo/GF/TPC to come up with a workaround that would allow for some sort of virtual Transfer Pak functionality with said games should they ever get released on NSO. I personally doubt they will put them on NSO as they'd actually make MORE money from something like a Gen 1/2/3 collection of games that have new compatibility/functionality with Home added in. Half the fun of the Stadium games came from using your own teams from the GB games thanks to the Transfer Pak, as well as the massive amount of extra storage space the game gave you. Sure, you could beat the game with rental Pokémon, but that was more of an exercise in frustration than anything else.
Quest? In some ways it felt too simplistic, and I frankly feel the ONLY reason that game is looked at fondly is due to the fact that it's on a system that is extremely RPG starved.
Conker? Yeah, it was a hilarious subversion of some of the things we came to expect from 3D platformers/collect-a-thons of the time, but it was a late release in a post-PS2 world. Also didn't help that DK64 more or less killed the genre for a bit outside of Mario titles.
DKR? Always felt like it was a pale imitation of Mario Kart.
Star Fox? Sure, the game was plenty of fun, but at the core it was still an arcade style rail shooter with the occasional open 3D area. These sorts of games always come with a shelf life, in this case being opening up Expert Mode via all medals, then doing it again on Expert.
Mario Kart, I don't 100% agree with, but I can see why it'd make the list. Doesn't matter if we're talking about a kart racer, a NASCAR game, an F1 game, etc. These games are ALWAYS notorious for rubber band AI, so it's more of an illusion of challenge with a large dose of the computer being a cheating bastard on top of it. The real fun from these games comes from having friends to play it with, and if you're lacking that then it tends to get old fast. Even if you have the friends however, the novelty wears off if there is a big skill gap, and it ALWAYS seems like I know at least one person in my friend groups that'll complain about items deciding one too many races.
Kirby? Can't comment, never played it, but I find it to be Nintendo's most overrated franchise. Played the first game and the NES game, never found them fun 🤷‍♂
DK64? Sure, it's a fun game, but as I alluded to earlier, I feel this is the game that killed collect-a-thons for many of us with the absolutely absurd amount of shit one has to do to 100% the game. I personally hate bringing up The Completionist following his charity/fraud scandal, but when Jirard had to redo DK64, I really got the sense that he was NOT looking forward to that episode.
Now, as for the other two games? Well, I feel like it's easy to hate on them with nearly 30 years of hindsight (and holy crap, that is a sentence and length of time that fills me with existential dread when it comes to the N64.....), but one needs to remember the impact both games had moving forward. Mario 64 is to this day the blueprint for just about any 3D platformer. Doesn't matter if the game is a massive collection fest or fairly straightforward, in both cases the game has taken SOMETHING design wise from Mario 64.
And while Goldeneye is erroneously remembered as the "first" FPS by many, it too laid the future groundwork for the genre. Sure, someone MIGHT have eventually come across the exact formula and gameplay loop with objective based gameplay, but I don't think the impact would have been felt nearly as much partly due to the lack of the James Bond license following the resurgence of the series in the mid-90s, especially as Pierce Brosnan for many of us 80s/90s kids is OUR 007. The FPS likely would have been dominated by more Doom clones for longer than we could have imagined as it seems like game developers tend to operate in cycles of "follow the leader" and "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Hell, I'd go so far to say that without Goldeneye, the genre as a whole would have been set back to a point where even games that aren't considered to be FPS titles but merely use the camera angle could have been affected. I honestly cannot see a game like Mirror's Edge existing in a world where Goldeneye didn't come along and experiment with the genre.

I agree with most of this list. However, the ones that had me shaking my head were Starfox and Mariokart. I genuinely think Starfox was the best n64 game. I still love it today. Yeah the story might be a little lacking but the actual gameplay is fantastic. The opening of other routes, the unlocking tanks and little guys for multiplayer was such a blast. Mariokart was just tons of fun. Great couch co-op times. A great game for just having fun without having to get all sweaty. I think the only reason 007 is "overrated" is because it doesn't hold up anymore. However, when it was out, I don't think there was a more impactful game in terms of those 90's pizza nights with friends. I still got my n64 and the reason I still have it is Starfox, Mariokart and Marioparty(and the game that I have a character of me in and I'm in the credits).

I'm never as big on overrated lists, even when I agree with some. Something about the negativity that it inherently brings just instantly puts me on the defensive, and I don't like to get overly argumentative in comments.
I think part of the trouble with calling older games overrated is the combination of their role in history, the happiness they brought at the time when newer games didn't exist yet, and the fact that every game has some niche fanbase that overrates it.
Quest 64, I bought and beat at its launch. I had some small amount of fun, but it was never great or really even good. I think some of the fanbase praises it ironically, just because it is so broken.
Mario 64, between its historical significance and its controls, is difficult to overrate. At the time, there was nothing else in its class, and for my tastes, the control still has yet to be improved upon. The camera is lousy for sure, and even the hardcore speedrunning crowd hates Rainbow Ride and the 2 swimming stages, but I'm hard pressed to name another 3D platformer I'd prefer to play.
Goldeneye... retroactively, yeah, the framerate is tough and the controls have long since been improved. However, in its time, it was a revelation for home console death matches, and for licensed games in general. Some of those multiplayer stages are still reall dynamite in their design. I don't know that it is overrated really, as most folks really revere it more for the memories than the current way it stacks up. However, I do believe there is still merit in some archaic game designs. Doom is still just fun, even if it has been iterated and improved upon. It still carries an atmosphere and feel all its own that still feels good. I see Goldeneye much the same way. There was a lot of room for improvement given modern hardware, but the stylistic and design choices made within the limitations of the time still lend it a pretty unique flavor that can still be enjoyable, though not as timeless as I'd argue Mario 64 to be.
I'm amazed at how much content you manage to get out and still maintain a consistent level of quality. I hope you get enough rest and family time!

It was also supposed to have music distribution, NES games, the ability to observe other player's sessions, and the ability to download beta test levels for upcoming games. While it was cancelled, some of the DD games, ended up being created as standard N64 releases, like Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Stadium, Mission: Impossible, Derby Stallion 64, and would have featured games like Street Fighter III, Diablo, Fire Emblem 64, Mother 3, Super Mario RPG 2. Even though Mario 64 is overrated I still like that game a lot. I remember looking at video game magazines reading about it and looking at pictures so hyped as a kid and had fun with it when it came out

i honestly agree with SM64, having played all the Super Mario games previously, i was a bit underwhelmed with SM64 overall. it was fun, but where were the powerups? 3 for the whole game?? and you had to unlock them? AND find the blocks they were contained in? i still like SM64, but over the years it shows it's age and it aged like milk...

@@MatttheMysterious in SMB3 you could take them with you and in SMW you could hold a powerup in between. it was not always that you had to find blocks to get the powerup. also, you did not have a time limit with said powerups, unlike in SM64 where you did. so i hope that clarified my issues with SM64, note that i dont HATE SM64, i merely address it's flaws that make the game overrated imo, it was still Mario's first successful 3D title. but the games following would come to do it much better.

@@Fortefyre I say less overrated and more a case of Nintendo's hubris and unwillingness to get away from the cartridge format being the major downfall of the system.
As is typical with Nintendo systems, the vast majority of the first party releases were great. The problem comes from the third party developers, or in this particular instance the lack of them.
The N64 only had 388 games released for it if we factor in all regions. One only needs to look at the NES (1387) and SNES (1738) to realize just how much of a drop off that is. In terms of volume of releases, Nintendo did not return to seeing over 1K titles on a single home console until the Wii.
In a different world where Nintendo adopted disc based tech much sooner? Who knows what happens.
In the world we live in however? The result was a system that was expensive at the time when compared to other disc based systems like the original Playstation. Nintendo lost a considerable amount of support, had to spend the entire generation after the N64 playing catch up and earning trust back, and eventually had to settle for being the "second system" people buy behind Sony or Microsoft rather than participate in the continued graphical arms race.
And honestly? Considering the current state of certain things, I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo might be gearing up to potentially be right back in the mix for the top slot with whatever comes after the Switch, especially as graphics are reaching a point where gains are really starting to become more and more minimal, systems are getting more expensive, and the gameplay is seeming to take a backseat to the graphics and, shall we say, other highly questionable aspects.
