Jim Richards drove the JPS BMW 635 CSi last weekend at the 2016 Australian Muscle Car Masters. SUPER100MPH was granted exclusive access inside the car with our Sony Action Cam.
From 'garage to garage', join Jim as his virtual passenger in this, Race 1 for Group C & A Cars held on Saturday, October 29.
We spend a few minutes on the dummy grid but your patience will be well rewarded. Pump up the volume on this one!
Eight laps of the Sydney Motorsport Park Circuit with the master himself is about as good as it gets.
Many thanks to Jim Richards, Pip Barker and the entire JPS BMW Team for their hospitality.

JPS Team BMW Reunion 2016

That looked like it was just a Sunday Drive for Jim. He was doing it easy. The car sounded beautiful, there's something about a straight 6, the 635 has a sweet sounding engine.
Damn straight. Love the sound of mine in a tunnel!
Jim is a bloody legend....one of the greatest touring car drivers of all time.
Jim is so smooth. Gentleman Jim is perfect!
The true glory days, Rotary Mazdas, Turbo 5 Audis,Big Turbo Volvos, Straight 6 BMWs and v8 falcons all on the same track
Had the privilege to meet Gentleman Jim for the second time at Downs last year after 30 years the first time at Nissan Mobil 1988.
When BMW’s sounded like BMW’s not the fart pop braaaaat fart we have today .......pure unadulterated aspirated @8000 rpm bmw flat 6er pure harmony .....except for a Ferrari v-12 @ redline not a better sound to bring back memories.
All good except it's an inline 6 not a flat 6, I agree.....sounds sweet !
15:53 for full noise. What an engine
This JPS BMW 635 CSI with Jim at the wheel and the Group A Alfa Romeo GTV6 driven by Colin Bond and Alan Jones were my favourite race cars of the era at Bathurst etc. Proper sounding cars. 😁👍
Gentleman Jim, lovely footage, what a machine
Typical JR, just looked so relaxed and like he was out for a Sunday drive, makes it look so easy
Two of my all time favourites. Jim Richards and that stunningly beautiful group C 635csi. Jim really opens it up about 21 min into this video. I met Jim once (he was my favourite Touring car driver ever) he is the nicest bloke, he would talk to anybody and the black beauty really had a high top end speed - oh that sound was glorious. Thanks for posting this- loved it 👍
When cigarette sponsorship was all motor sport needed jps was a nice smoke, and this car sounded amazing ,jim your a legend
Jim and I will resume our battler in these cars at the Phillip Island Classic 17-19 March next year if anyone is interested in coming to watch. There could well be up to 16 BMWs on the grid that weekend. I think more likely only 10-11 but if everyone comes 16!! Wow, what a sight that will be.
Awesome video..no annoying commentary..just the sound of the motor and Jim at work!
Straight 6 howl...Shivers up the spine!!
\
Fantastic to watch and listen to. They don't come any better than JR and this car is a musical masterpiece. Thanks for posting.
JR , just so smooth.......................
Super Car! Greetings from the Swiss 635 Friends.
Hello from Downunder!
I love this car so much I ended up buying a 628 CSI :) great video , thanks for sharing such a rare insight!!
A master at work!
The M3 engine (S14) has the same engine as the M6 (M88/3), but with 2 cylinders cut off, great footage, thanks!!
Great video! Thank you! As he is going out to line up (2:38) I thought how much Jim's profile reminds me of Hakkinen's facial profile as he ages.
A really interesting video. Thanks for posting it guys, I was really enjoying the first few laps until I ran out of talent. Jim's a legend.
No David, you proved your talent in the Sunday race, really good stuff, a well deserved third and you did finish in front of Jim. We all have off days, if it was me driving I would have a lot more offs than your good self.. lol Thanks for having us aboard that weekend you have a wonderful dedicated team around you, did the JPS team spirit proud, looking forward to seeing you all again soon.
warm regards
Tim
Super100MPH nnn
Great car ! Saw it live at the AvD Oldtimer GP at the Nürburgring this year, it just sound so amazing. Was cool talking to the driver and pitcrew ! :)
AWESOME, great quality video. Thanks heaps for posting it.
Everytime the 9 year old me happened to see any of the 1985 TC championship i saw THIS bloody thing pissin it in !!!!!
I love this video, thanks so much for posting.
What a vid, and what a great channel!
Going to take me a while but cant wait to get stuck in and watch some of your awesome uploads!
Cheers,Rob.
Awesome stuff guys, thank you for uploading! Peter, Jim and Pip are legends for getting this amazing car out there!! :)
Ecurie Bowden Pip & co did a great job, we are putting together a tribute, got some great photos from the early days of JPS.. coming soon..
Here's that video we promised ruclips.net/video/EIGN2kUoZfk/видео.html enjoy..
Absolutely awesome
Big DJR fan but this was still a good watch, thanks.
As Jim would say... That's bloody awewome... Shhhhhh master at work....
Was that the GIO Nissan GTR way out in front?....no surprise if it was.
amazing!
The driver reminds me of a marathon runner I seen on a RUclips video yesterday.
I love my inline6 BMW.
635 sounds beutiful
Excellent video. What a time warp. Jim is a superior driver to the M3 driver in front & is probably only 8 tenths.
It seems like the gearbox is a normal syncromesh albeit different ratios. Any idea on the horsepower on these?
C. 420bhp in the m88 and 350bhp in the m30 (Group A) are numbers I've read.
@@Colintherabbit Correct. The gearbox is the Getrag M Sport gearbox with the dog leg first, that was in it when new. It just has sturdier internals. Same with the diff. This car was originally built by Alpina for the factory for the ETCC. Back in the day when Frank Gardiner was running the team, I worked for BMW and quite often I would drive out to the shop at Terry Hills with a mystery box from the factory. I was not allowed to open it. All over the world, if you race a BMW ex factory car you get plugged into the support network. In the 80s Jim was punting this against 500hp Commodores that were also lighter. More often than not Jim won. It says a lot abouit the car and Jim.
@@TechnikMeister2 Great insight. Thankyou!
That guy in the M3 seems to have no idea what a proper racing line is.
Just realised this is the Group C 635. I have one question. Did they ever work out if the metal shavings at Bathurst (which caused it to be pitted for a long time during the race) were just an engineering oversight or sabotage?
Hi Wade, I made some enquirers for you, as far as we know it was never resolved how those shavings got into the fuel. In those days the race fuel came from 44 gallon drums then transferred to smaller drums when purchased by a team. No other teams had the same issue that day so the shaving somehow got added after the fuel was purchased the day before. It was a sad day for me because the 635 was really in for a big chance that year 1983 as demonstrated in the opening lap, the 635 was flying..
Yes well thats why I asked, it was a HUGE chance and that thing sounded beautiful.
Music to my ears 😁
So is this an M30 powered car or is it s38/m88?
This is the Group C car - with the M88/s38 engine. The Group C cars had the wide wheel arch fairings. Later on the Group C cars were phased out and Group A became the racing standard. The Group A BMW 635csi did not have the huge flares and it had the M30 engine. The M30 engined cars won the touring car championship in 1985. The Group A 635csi was a better balanced car than the Group C car ( as per Jim Richards)
Aaaaand the GTR disappears hahahaha
Is this the m30b35 or the m90?
This engine is a M88 with 24v engine with mechanical injection 93.4mm bore 84mm stroke I believe, there are several versions of the M88, also called M90, M90LE, the engine is found in E24 coupe and E28 Sedan, M1, M1 Procar Gr4, M1 Gr5 turbo cars, and believe the motor in this car is similar to the M1 Procar which makes about 460-470hp depending on build. You can here Jim say something about 600hp at the end of the video, but I doubt that's possible in NA trim, it's quite amazing they are near 500 with it NA trim lol
Real race cars have 6 cylinders👍👍
I can't believe how abrupt and rude some of the people in this video are.... "I thought Australian motorsport fans had more going for them, than this.. You're all a pack bastards"
It needs a short shifter
Corrrr. The hell with all that Tesla shit and progressive deadbeat ideologies. So good.
This man is afraid!
