It's a 1963, because there is no oil pump, which began in 1964. Love the channel! I restored one of these a year ago!
The bolt on the air filter housing held a plastic hook that holds the park plug cable free of the cylinder.

Thank you for the information! I love it when a viewer has first hand knowledge about a bike and shares it with us. I'll change the title of the video. U the man!

Yes. The right hand cover was replaced with a two-stroke oil tank, feeding the throttle-linked oil injector pump on the right side. Yamaha labeled it "Autolube".

We have a 1966 U5 50cc with the step-thru frame. We got it in 1968, my Dad traded our 1952 Pontiac for it. The engine looks very much like the one on your bike. It has a 3 speed automatic transmission. The plastic leg shields are long gone and impossible to find replacements.

While a carburettor teardown is necessary for a 1963 machine out of hibernation, if you had replaced the carburettor cover and the rubber cable cover, the engine would start easier, as the differential pressure would ensure that the engine vacuum would draw fuel from the bowl.
Most likely, this engine would be modified (mainly oil injector pump added) to be installed in the later G5 80cc street bike.

The YG1T Trailmaster came out as a 63-1/2 model without Autolube like this bike. The 1964-65 YG1TK got Autolube that made it more desirable in the market against the Hondas and Suzukis. The bolt on the air cleaner housing is for a fuel hose guide. The cylinder head on this bike is rotated 90 degrees out. The open fins around the spark plug should be bottom to top for better air flow.

Interesting. It's always fun to see those old bikes come to life 👍 You got a new subscriber. I used to have the 1970 Yamaha L5T Trailmaster 100. It's interesting to see how it evolved from your 1963 version.

BAck in the day, a buddy of mine had one of these, and it had a habit (like most 2 strokes of the time) of occasionally fouling the plug. We were on a trail ride and sure enough, it fouled a plug. We had no plug wrench (dumb kids), but we did have a 10 mm wrench - so we just pulled the head off, flicked the piece of crap from between the electrodes, bolted the head back on and continued our ride...

Fun fun I LOVE the old stuff .....and nice primer squeeze bottle where did you find that !!!??🔧

    • @flipfix

The bottle is called "Zoom Spout" I get them on Amazon. If you get them from a hardware store they usually have a light oil in them for stuff like sewing machines. Pour it out and load with fuel of choice. I learned about these bottles from Mustie1 years ago on RUclips.
