Game changer!!!! I have been foiling since the first week that the Glimmer machine came out & done so many experiments myself with both the Glimmer and the Gemini, but was still getting inconsistent results. The whole "the timer is just a timer" was such an eye opener! I always thought that it regulated the temp once the green light came on! This will help sooooo much! Thanks for the info!
@@Waffleflowercrafts the same situation here! This is been one of the BEST instructional videos that I’ve watched. She’s a great teacher. She’s really sweet and easy to understand / how info is conveyed. Hint.. hint!!! I think it would be great if Waffle Flower did a craft retreat. We used to have Junkie Fest (Stamp Junkies) and some other companies have done craft retreats but watching her made me think about how great it would be if maybe y’all could / would do something like that?? You have so many great products… you’d sell out in a heartbeat and I’d be first in line!!
Oh my....You really answered alot of my questions. I love these machines...but always got inconsistent results. You just gave a MASTERCLASS on usage. Thank you for all the effort. My Christmas cards this year are gonna shine brighter❤
This was the most comprehensive video I've seen yet! Thank you so much for doing this! I have RA and a the Gemini was the only way I could go when I decided to take up card making again a few years ago. I had given up as my hands have limits now. I got a Gemini Foil machine for Christmas and haven't opened it yet, a little afraid I'll use up all my foil on practice! :) But this video made me feel more comfortable and willing to just dig in and go for it! Can't wait to purchase some of your new products as well!
Hi Ashley, did you see that Nancy Stamps commented here and "warned" us about the Gemini platform can be warped if left on "high" for too long? I did 1min on high just to be safe but she suggested starting with 30-40 seconds. And these are the settings for Glimmer foils. If you use Gemini foils, shorter time is preferred because they "melt" at a lower temperature! Best of luck! -Nina
Don't be intimidated it is so easy to use. Use low setting 15 sec with Gemini Jr. papercraft foils (HSN sells a bundle of foils for the Gemini) I use Glimmer foils on Low @ 23-25 sec. Use 100# or higher weight smooth cardstock I use Neenah 110# 200 gsm Index white cardstock. I also have used Hobby Lobby heavy weight cardstock with great results. Pink Fresh Studio has a great video Foiling 101 and Nancy Stamps has many videos on the Gemini Jr. Foil Press and foiling. Keep in mind the foil rolls are 15 feet long @ $3-$5/roll and the only way to learn is "to practice". Place your foiling machine as close to the Jr as your craft area permits for ease in transferring the plate without burning your fingers. After you have foiled a few things, you will see how easy it is to become more comfortable using it. Also, get the Pink Fresh Studio solid foil plate to foil the negative (waste leftovers). Amazon sells it for $20. Once you get over the initial intimidation, you'll love foiling
There was a lot of good information here but some of the information could have used additional research. The Gemini foil platform will warp with too long usage on high. Gemini Paper foil transfers at a much lower heat, it will cause overfoiling on other machines an higher heat settings. Yes, the higher heat is better for Glimmer foil, but the timing is based on the size of the die. Start with 30 seconds and work your way up, again or you risk warping your platform. Each machine has pros and cons and there is not one correct perfect method each time.
Thanks for the info, Nancy! I have some Gemini foils on the way, I will test more. When you say the platform warps, do you mean the purple one that the plate sits on or the green plate that goes on top?
@@Waffleflowercrafts the purple heating platform will curl upwards from being on high heat too long. 35-40 seconds on high should be good for the Glimmer foils.
@@NancyStamps Thank you for the info! My order for the Gemini foils got canceled due to supply chain issues... Will be testing as soon as they come in!
This video is excellent! I would've never thought of measuring the temperature of my hot foil plate. I found out that the sweet spot for my Go Press and Foil is appx. 158° and so far my test results with the Waffle Flower solid plate and Spellbinders's Glimmer Foils and Couture Creations foils have been great! This information confirmed for me that foils I purchased from a seller on Amazon were inferior (I know, I know. You get what you pay for!).
Very informative I have the Gemini junior and foil machine and a big shot so was thinking of buying a hot foil glimmer machine so I can switch die cutting machines thank you for sharing now I have confidence what I need to do with both foiling machine’s x
Nina, I have not had great results with foiling, so I appreciate your advice and tips! Besides, I would sit and listen to you read the dictionary! Thanks so much! xx
Sorry, another comment. I’m thinking the glimmer for the big shot would work better than using the foilpress for my Gemini. The Gemini “spits out” the plate which could be detrimental if it isn’t caught in time. The glimmer plate will stay on the big shot after running through and not fall off because it doesn’t need to be caught. I’m also thinking just using new plates with the glimmer on the big shot only, rather than using the same plates used for die cutting on the gemini might be better!
Wow. Thank you for such an informative RUclips on foiling. I purchased the Spellbinders foiling system a little bit ago and haven't used it yet. This gives me some insight and courage to use it soon. :)
Thank you for this detailed video! I’ve found the best results for me is at the highest setting on the Gemini + 1 minute or more. And I use Neenah 110 pound and I’ve never had any issues 💕☺️
Thanks for so much great information, I love the look of the hot foil and am so excited for so many new designs coming out. Now I just need to find some Hammermill paper
Thanks so much for your scientific experiments and sharing the information. I’m going to pull out my thermometer and test the heat settings to help with my foiling.
I am very happy you guy's did the quality check. Makes me totally okay with spending a little more money. Because i agree, some of the plates dont foil correctly every time. I'd say pinkfresh and spellbinders are the other two that are good. Ive tried a few others , they're different colors, and its inconsistent, i agree. Thanks for video!
Thank you, for such a great informational video. I have the Glimmer machine, and hammermill on it’s way. I’m going to write done your temperature and timing findings to help me get the best results.
I've had a glimmer machine for a couple of years and love it! I absolutely love foiling and that there are more products coming out! I really want that triple line diamond plate but it is already out of stock! Hopefully it will be back soon!
Thanks for the informative video. I have the Gemini foil press and I really like it. I hadn’t thought about the variations you mentioned with the different foils and colors but I have noticed different results. I used the Gemini foil that came with my machine and I thought it worked better than the glimmer foil. I am not noticing variations on the edges so it might be your machine or your plates could be warped. I’ve been using mine on medium heat. I’ll try high heat as you suggested.to see if it improves the results, especially with the foils that I’ve had trouble with. Thanks again, Nina.
What was it that you were talking about with the difference in how the platform is on the machine before adding the plate, paper, and foil? Something about whether the platform needs to be plugged in all the way or not? Didn’t quite understand that so please clarify, Ty!
Thank you Nina! Can't wait to try your plates. They're gorgeous!! I'm hoping to finally get rotator cuff & bicep surgery on my non disabled arm so there will be no cardmaking or foiling for me for quite a while. I love to foil. I have the Gemini system since it's inception & the purple base will warp. Ask me how I know. 😡
Great tutorial, this was very helpful. I’m considering getting a foil machine and own the Platinum & Gemini die cut machines. With that said, I’m not totally happy with the Gemini so I thought I would go with the glimmer foil machine, instead. After listening to your review, I’m thinking that it is practice and experimenting that will help with the learning curve, of either machine. Thank you so much for this review.

I’m really on the fence which machine to go with, I’m swayed to the glimmer as I have a big shot but the Gemini looks really good too. I’m really struggling to decide.🤔🤔🤔🤔
I have both the big shot and Gemini but I prefer my Gemini and have that one on my desk. The big shot is on the floor to the side as a backup. If I prefer the Gemini, would it just be best to get the foilpress or should I consider getting the glimmer and using the big shot just when I want to foil? It’s hard to decide between the two! Also, is the foilpress discontinuing? I saw that somewhere.
We assume that you are talking about the Solid Foil Plate? Both are used for foiling the reverse designs. Ours measures 5x6in, which is bigger than the Pink Fresh solid plate. If you already have the Pink Fresh plate, there is no need to purchase again unless you want to have a wider, and taller plate.
