    I tried painting on buckram and I wasn't able to see through the eyes

      try to use a sponge and pat on the paint

      (you can also use spare foam if you have no spare sponges)

      You might have accidently purchased buckram stiff backing material. How do I know? I made this same mistake! I had to make a second purchase to get buckram that was more for cross stitching instead of the buckram used as a strong sewing backing which is pretty much opaque. Hope this helps :D
