Back in 1867, just weeks before the United States had began discussing the purchase of Alaska from Russia, the Russians, in the wake of their Crimean War loss, were looking to unload their burdensome American colony onto someone who wasn't an enemy, and their first pick just happened to be one of the world's smallest countries, the Principality of Liechtenstein. Standing at just 62 square miles in area, doubly landlocked by Austria and Switzerland, and with an army of only 80 men, what might have happened had this tiny country actually bought Alaska?

a cool alternate history would be a scenario in which Maine never split from Massachussetts. Sounds like not much but with the senate seat race leading up to the Civil War it could have really changed things in the 1820s through 60s
Imagine this in the cold war - Liechenstein would be a total battleground between Capitalism and Communism.
Liechtenstein is a heavily capitalist country; they'd be a strong US ally and probably join NATO in this scenario.

Interesting video! My only gripe is that in a theoretical conflict between Canada and Lichtenstein over Southern Alaska, Canada would absolutely not want to give in. In our timeline Canada pursued the Alaska Panhandle and Britain's decision to grant much of it to America caused a ripple of anti-British sentiment across Canada as Canadians felt betrayed by the Empire. In this alternate timeline, i can see Britain likewise interfering in any colonial dispute to side with Austria in the name of good relations much like our timeliness, but Canada would definitely still think it worth pursuing.

heard something about Denmark being offered the Area which they were close to buying considering Denmark and Russia was close at this time. and that a Danish Explorer employed by Russia mapped the Bering straight hence the name. and Denmark. could have maintained Alaska. remmenber we own Greenland which is similar to Alaska. i find it interesting that this could be a thing similar to how Belgium was offered the Congo region and considering most of the royal Russian family was Danish at the time. however Denmark would mainly do as what they did with Greenland before the 1900's (nothing rly) a few forts and outposts trading stations etc. but when ww2 comes around and Germany invaded Denmark, would the Germans had over Alaska to the Japanese. it might not have a big impact but it could open a new front that means alot considering how much the Japanese wanna devout themself to Alaska. i'm sure some troops will be sent there. how many 10-25k rly interesting stuff actully. what do you guys think? rly a alternate theroy here lol.
Well IRL when Denmark fell Greenland was occupied by the USA and Iceland was occupied by the UK. If Alaska was owned by Denmark then Britain's Canadian Dominion would jave just took it over as soon as Denmark fell.

I'm thinking ww2 would end the same way, but a hole new front could be opened and would probaly prolong WW2 by months maybe into 1946. The US Island hoping caimpaign could be larger. It's just interesting to think about since i could see the japanese jump into Alaska if given to them by Germany or not.

So Swiss economic might COMBINED with the enormous resource wealth of the Alaskan wilderness? (and potentially even the Arctic as they'd no doubt carve out a portion come the 21st century.) Dang. Also, if there's a German-owned colony in North America, many Germans might migrate there upon increasing tensions in America. Even if the 1st and 2nd world wars don't start, German Americans did face occasional bigotry from the Anglo majority who were distrustful. Alaska has limited habitable land, even if they trade most of their wealth for food, so either the population effect is noticeable, but limited, or the German alliance behind it exerts diplomatic and economic pressure to purchase the more undeveloped Western lands of Canada, maybe forming German Cascadia. Throw in some German engineering for mass-transit and eventually aquaponic and aeronponic farming methods to overcome the challenges of the local climate, and this place could've been a technocratic state that still had a beautiful environment.
