I feel for you guys, trying to get some kind of prog history out of Steve. He's not the easiest interview, bless him! I guess it's hard to understand how a thing is happening when you're in the middle of it yourself. Most people credit Sgt Peppers with opening doors (Robert Fripp has cited it) that everyone then went through. The seeds were all there when King Crimson's debut came out, although by then The Nice, Soft Machine and Pink Floyd were already expanding musical possibilities. Jon Anderson and Chris Squire were itching to do something new and different, and Yes were a great venue for all that creativity. Steve would have found a home in one of those prog bands, even if it hadn't been with Yes. He was never going to be just another blues rock dude, and would have kept searching for a group to feature his talents.
