I was ten when I got this - and that Alex Ross cover blew my mind apart man
likewise, the villains one with the darker colours was even better.
My first Wizard mag! My 9 year old self loved this!
The usually calm and self-contained Jovial Jim Rugg on the verge of totally losing it over Primordials art...I guess everyone has their breaking point! I pictured you as one of those P. Bagge rendered characters with jagged fangs and a mushroom cloud over your head! It's alright I am often baffled by the world as well. We won't ever look at it again.😄
Only other time he went off like that was over the cover for the Weapon X trade lol
Giffen drew some CAP cameos in Iron Man (one of his earliest jobs) and, criminally, NEVER AGAIN
Mr. Show...The band 'Titanica' visit a fan in the hospital...(David Cross-just a head with beef jerky body, arms, legs!) One of the funniest things ever!
2 things: I still have those Tick figures. Love ‘em. That astronaut comic... I remember attending San Diego Comic-Con back at this time and the astronaut involved had a signing event scheduled alongside the massive lines you’d see for the hot artists of the day. His availability to sign books was announced on the loudspeaker across the main hall and basically no one was lining up to meet him. The guy had literally been to THE MOON and 100s of people were waiting to meet Liefield in the next line over while it was crickets in the astronaut line. Sad.
I used to get my Wizard magazines from Forbidden Planet, London whenever I went to the West End every Saturdays. This would've been around 1996-97 when I first picked up Wizard.
Man, this was Jim’s last issue? This was my first haha. I’ve been waiting patiently for you guys to get here.
You guys rule! Another great Wizard commentary, and thanks for the MADMAN contest shout out! From outlaw MADMAN fan art to outlaw IMAGE GRAND DESIGN fan art! 🤘🤘-Christian Meesey
HA!! A Kaare Andrews fan art piece!! Wild!! (Be cool to scour the Fan Art in Wizard Mags to see who 'Made It' in the Cartoonist Industry!!) I might even be in there!!! LOL!!! :)
I think newsstand sales are where you would see big numbers for the Star Trek books, as well as other licensed properties. They used to sell them in the theater as movie tie-ins also.
Picked up my copy of Red Room today (in deepest darkest Scotland of all places), great read, gonna be asking my LCS to put new issues aside.
Really enjoy your Wizard reviews, this one is from just before I started to get into comics.
That Alex Ross art is timeless!
Love you guys! Rugg coming in HOT!
My mom just dropped off a ton of my wizard magazine boxes. I'm gonna read along this time
Watching this and at 25:00 I see an ad for Dark Moon Productions with Thespian and The Inovators of which I was the artist 🤣🤣🤣
I read all the Star Wars Legends novels and all the Sith Empire stuf that takes place in ancient SW lore, from thousands of years BEFORE Old Republic! I LOVVVE that ish!
OMG!!! I noticed that foot thing immediately!!! LOVE the explanation of how it likely happened!! Light table mah-fuggah!!! LOL!!!!
When this came out a kid brought it to school and we spent all recess reading it. As soon as school got out I went and bought it. He had the villains cover, I got the heroes.
I still get a kick out of hearing you guys say 'Gareb Shameless'!
Hey now, some of my best friends are potheads chilling on the couch
I love ambush bug, got it in a grab box in the 90s and I wore that issue out. I always grab them when i see them.
I have that one! Alex Ross his cover: for me a MUST buy at the time!!
"im not a big star trek guy" -Jim Rugg while talking about a Star Wars article. lol. that gave me a laugh.
Lamour drew Zen! Wow!
I so WISH you guys would do a break down fo Cam Kennedy art on these star wars comics.... I legit fell in love with that art, IN LOVE! just wish you guys would break it down cause you guys do soooo good! there is also the art that Al WIlliamson did for those " classic star wars " books... fuck that stuff was me falling in love with the art and not caring what anyone was " saying" in the comics! ( note, not a STAR WARS head, or maybe I am? but that is not why I am saying this, it is just art that left a HUGE impression on me)
If Colorize is the software I think it is, I had a copy at one point and it was awesome. You didn't need to make any special setting to color over black line art. Just pick a brush size and what color you wanted and it would paint over the art while keeping all the line art visible. Loved it.
Jim coming in hott on this one!!
Merci, j'apprends beaucoup avec vous.
Alex Ross work always reminded me of Mad Magazine covers. Being able to produce at his pace is pretty amazing, but he seemed to have stunted sensibilities. Even Norman Rockwell used photo-reference, but he made them pose in Rockwell postures. When Ross decides it's a cool idea to paint Reed Richards as the professor from Gilligan's island, it diminishes the stature of the work, in my view, and maybe even throws you out of the story.
His cover painting of Doctor Strange here appears to me a direct copy of a well-known photo of Frank Zappa! Check out the album cover to Jazz from Hell, and it’s almost exactly the same as the Sorcerer Supreme right here; Ross just barely altered Zappa’s trademark mustache, but everything else-the eyebrows, crooked nose, etc. are identical. And that record won a Grammy in 1988 for best instrumental work, so it’s hardly an obscure reference on Ross’s part.
Giffen introduced Lobo in Omega Men
People give Liefeld shit for his art and sure he has some real fucked up stuff. But he also has some badass stuff and if feet are so important for you that you cant look at his comics, then I have a feeling his feet arent your biggest problem. I dig liefeld back then, and now.
Ed, what years were you a the Kurbert school? I'm wondering if you were there during the same time as Jerry Beck.
Back in early Photoshop days you could only have 1 layer, and 1 undo step.
Alex Ross went to American Academy of Art in Chicago, same school I dropped out of in 97, same school Kanye dropped out of the year before me
Mr Show lmoa 🤣
Yo Joel Orbeta! Put your hand up. Your work is 🔥, but how come I can’t find you on the internet or insta?

Valiant and Image, the rumors were, they were paying Wizard to heap praise on all their stuff. Caliber probally wasn't on the money train.
Hey, I love your channel and have been watching for a while. I would like to see a video (or three) about the Wizard masterpiece editions! I like these collections and was wondering what you guys think about them.
Chris Meesey is a kayfaber, he is in the Facebook group
52:38 I remember having that Glider Robin figure. Been digging into the whole Batman toyetic gimmicks and actually enjoying the creativity these people were putting into milking the franchise, though this is me filtering this through kid me where I spent a lot of times making up my own stories for the characters. I've been wanting to do some comedic story or tongue & cheek comic where it feels like a toy catalogue, but a comic. Kind of Freakazoid self aware like, granted that pulled a lot from Mike Allred.
"Alex Ross was the MCU before the MCU." (paraphrasing). Brilliant point, Jim. Never really thought of that before, but in hindsight it makes perfect sense.
Alex Ross' best work is his concept designs and sketches that fill the backmatter in collected editions for Kingdom Come, Marvels, Earth X, etc.
Red Ass Jim Rugg. Ha
There's a story in Alack Sinner in which Muñoz travels to USA to kill Keith Giffen (he's named Kitten in the story) for swiping his art. One of the swipes was a female character which was Muñoz' girlfriend at the time.
This is the first Wizard video I’ve caught from you guys and I don’t understand half of the references. Would I if I started from Wizard #1. Also, it seems like the guys are dumping on artists etc. That’s not professional and is in poor taste.
