    • @MugiHours
      @MugiHours 2 года назад +51

      This. I've seen some amazing artists get their reputation trashed overnight on social media over this and often the "cancelling" is a misunderstanding, a lie or something small blown out of proportion. It might be hard, but as creators we will just need to do our best to ignore it. The "cancel-happy" types aren't our target audience anyway ((they are but a very loud and obnoxious minority)) and the people who genuinely enjoy our work will understand our side of the issue and stay. This is definitely a hostile time to be a creative sharing your work online, though...

    • @Noelciaaa

      Yep.... this is my biggest problem. These days it feels that even if I only draw flowers, plants, nature, i might still get cancelled D:. Really made me not want to post anything anymore. And not posting leads to less motivation on putting more energy into smth, nothing more than doodles, rough sketches, since I kind of do draw energy from feedback, I wish to bring joy or comfort, understanding, something with my art....

I also haven’t posted to RUclips in a long time - it’s hard to not feel the pressure to post but it’s given me the space to work on large scale projects that are important to me :) I’ll be back, but in the meantime, I’m taking care of my mental and creative health.

I had also started an art account, but after only 1 year of posting art, I felt even more bad about myself and my skills.. I've been comparing myself to other artists and friends, which killed my creativity even more and made me think "why bother"? Why continue?
      I've been taking a long break from social media, and I feel now I'm doing better and have started making art again, but for myself, just for enjoyment, and not thinking about the validation I sought all the time on Insta. Hey Cam!! Sorry a bit of a ramble coming up 😅 I am 5 years younger than you and have always been a massive Internet and RUclips freak. The Internet has always been my main source of inspiration to develop my own creativity, and even a huge part of my personality. However, for quite a handful of years now, I haven’t really found anyone’s content to absolutely “obsess over” as I used to when I was a bit younger, and I was kinda sad that I didn’t really have anyone’s content to really REALLY look forward to anymore, no one that I strongly related to and kinda looked up to.. which led me to think maybe I’d just outgrown this new era of the Internet
    … but then I got Covid (all good now!! 👍🏿🤠) and had the time to question my current life 1837 times a day, one of them with a hat-hairlined guy describing so SSSSSSsssssssO accurately the pressure of feeling behind in life… and now here I am, journalling for my deathbed self to feel accomplished, and wishing to grow into being as creative, self-aware and overall just kind and nice as you seem to be (in my own way of course)!!
    So yea. Just wanted to say thank u for being someone to look up to in this weird, weirddDdd times. For what you do, and for how you do it. You are really putting some warmth and hope back into people’s hearts man!! Much love from the Basque Country, Spain! ✌🏿💛

    "Hobbies don't always need to be jobies" I love that 😂 I was lucky enough to realise that when I was younger. Sometimes hobbies and interests/pashions are just too risky to invest into becoming a career and it's good to have a long, hard, logical think about the idea. The good thing about keeping it a hobby is you will always enjoy it, it won't inevitably become a chore like it would if you made it your career.

Its a very lame compliment, especially if youve heard it enough times. I think its a common association for people: hobby --> money. Maybe because they have a boring job themselves and project their idea of making money from their hobby on you.

    This topic has been on my mind for years and I'm very happy you've talked about this! I've wanted to turn my "hobbies into a jobby" but the pressure of the internet KILLS my creativity. Anxiety and depression always takes over and I don't have the mental energy to make anything. I'll be active online trying to grow a following but I most of the time I get burnt out and start over (deleting posts or RUclips videos). I took a break from making anything or posting anything until recently. I've been making a lot of art but I haven't shared anything yet I'm afraid of getting stuck in that loop again. I really want to turn my passion into a career, but is it possible with out being constantly active online? Or is my want for a career with my passions just something I've been conditioned to want because of the internet? Just random thoughts I wanted to share. I feel like a lot of people could be in the same boat as me.

I just scroll mindlessly for hours (syd lockdown doesn't help). I've always been creative, I'm a singer & song writer, I draw and create, I'm a makeup artist and I started to feel like if I'm not making content or showing my audience then what's the point? When the reality is I should be doing things for myself, and remember to put the phone down and pick up the guitar again. for me

    Consistency pressure is a huge one for me!! I used to feel like I need to post everything all the time. I run a small art shop online and my socials are about my art, so it’s disappointing when I see a dip in views because I took a few weeks off. But I need to because social media has become a huge distraction and time water in my life lately. You’re so right about people sacrificing their real life for an online one, that was happening to me and burning me out. It wasn’t right.
    I take breaks and it’s like I’ll post when I’m damn well ready to post. No matter what we do the algorithm doesn’t always have our best interests, so there’s no point of pleasing it.
    You’re also so right that the internet can also foster creativity. I find that when I’m on RUclips, it’s very inspiring and not a time killer. I often come here to learn or find focusing music, but things like IG I can end up in a time warp and lose my sense of time. Or it puts me in a cynical mindset…
    I often just uninstall those apps to take a break and come back when I’m ready. Things like my podcasts and RUclips though, well I keep because they’ve been keeping me focused on where I want to go. For me, other networks are just a way to share my life or what I’m working on but they can be way too addictive!!

    Watching this at 5am (I haven't been to sleep yet,) and yet it's so relevant. Being in lockdown should afford me loads of time to just write my dang book. But I just can't seem to get into the mindset and so I find myself sinking into this mindset that I'm spinning my wheels and I could be so much happier and more productive if I just buckled down and fought the monkeys (I finished a 120-something chapter manga over 5 hours because I sank my teeth into it and once I start I can't stop.)
    It's funny how Cam's videos always seem to show up when I'm about to sink back into that mindset. Just when I need them.
    Thanks man. I'll fight my monkeys. But for now, I think I'll sleep.

    i haven't posted a video in 3 months because of moving house, which is a major life adjustment of course, yet for some reason my brain is like "wow you're lazy why don't you have another video up by now". it feels like a constant race sometimes to "please the algorithm" instead of uploading content that i want when i want. so thanks so much for this as always. i love every single one of your videos & they really help encourage me to keep going on my path. i'm still a very small youtuber but the pressure has already begun and your videos help me take a second to breathe & remind myself i'm doing the best i can. much love!

    This is so well said! I love the part where you broke down how many years we spend scrolling or online. And it’s true that it doesn’t have to be all or nothing when we want to make changes like this. As usual you’ve given a hopeful outlook for something that can be viewed very negatively, such as spending a lot of time online and how that makes us feel. 😊

    Good video! Creativity is extinguished in elementary school as well. The main reason is because there is too much standardization in school. I am sure many of you have been in math class, and they teach you 1 way to do it. If you find another way to solve a problem, they will count your answer wrong (even if it is right). This is the dark side of too much efficiency.

    Oh I love that!! Also, the less people spend time on their phones to, let's say, make art and share it, the more content we're going to get but less and less people to see it because they're busy creating instead of scrolling... I feel like having massive audiences for everyone isn't compatible with a healthy happy society who doesn't spend days on their phones, you know what I mean? Sometimes everything just feel pointless 😊

    This was fantastic!!! I consider myself someone who thinks about stuff deep and often so it’s unusual to hear new ideas or concepts that I agree with that I haven’t though of yet, but you always bring a new perspective that I’m like “oh yeah, of course, why didn’t I think of that”. I love the one for me, one for the masses approach, I’ll have to think on that one.
    Keep it up!

    I do claytons style social media now. A bit of a scroll every few days on the lap top only, and rarely post. Big change from sharing my upcycled clothing and life in various forms online for 20+ years. Next minute, I am painting. I didn't know I was arty like that. It's been so refreshing to do life and now art, without the compulsion to constantly share with everyone. It's astounding what comes out when I tell myself it's only for me to see.

    When I was younger I was going through a huge artistic slump, where I was just feeling there wasn't much point to making art if no one would see it. Then a classmate introduced me to the first form of social media I'd ever used 'Deviantart', and just having the potential for my work to be seen, even if only by a small handful of people, gave me the drive to keep creating, and still does to a certain degree.

    I had an accident a few years ago and I was reduced to watching RUclips for a long time and then got one of these phones, which I had avoided like the plague. I got one for the camera and hot addicted to it. Gradually I began to find my inner life depleted and my imagination not what it used to be. Since I'm an artist, this is alarming.

    "Define enough, in terms of your metrics" this is a statement from an artist in the business camp of creating. Their is artist as creator and artist as businessman. It becomes easier when you stop fighting in the inbetween and embrace yourself as fully one

    YES! I avoid sharing most of my artwork. When I was younger my parents would often encourage me to upload them online, but by the time I was about 14 I found I was making artwork purely to post online. Not fun and very draining, as I find to do that I have to feed off the energy of the audience for both inspiration and encouragement; if said energy is negative then the resulting work will be dull and lifeless. These days, my work is deeply personal to me, and I only share it with the most trusted people in my life. This is a benefit to me in many ways, as it allows me absolute freedom of expression - without judgement, _and_ without the risk of anyone stealing my pieces or ideas.
    Instead, I keep my art as a hobby.
    I'm currently starting college, a writing and literature course (lit is my other passion). So when my writing runs dry, I can still fall back on my artwork to pull me through in providing a creative outlet. Another kind of 50/50 approach.

  • @TheMarmadukian
    @TheMarmadukian Год назад

    The part you said about how "if you are creative you are supposed to want to have an audience" was what held me back for so long. I wanted to make a blog, but felt so much pressure to make a "successful" blog, so I threw it all to the wind, I use no theme, a basic blogger blog with a random image of myself kissing a dolphin from 17 years ago as the header. I do nothing to promote it, I don't even give my friends a link. I just write on there to organize my thoughts, the ones I don't mind people reading if they come to it, and I am also hoping to find my voice on what I want to write about eventually. Until then, it's stress free writing practice that is technically online. I don't have please an algorithm by posting x amount of times a week, sometimes I post everyday in a week, other times I'll take a month off. But this has been the most consistently I have ever kept up with writing online, and since starting it, I've written a few reddit posts where people have complimented my writing style, which means that I have definitely improved in some ways. Now, I'm trying to make a game using the same "give no effs" attitude that I use for the blog, just making something that I enjoy both creating and playing.

    The consistency one gets me. I feel so guilty sometimes about the lack of regular and new work up in my Instagram. It makes me embarrassed when I have "artist" on my profile anywhere (e.g a dating site) and inevitably get asked "what kind of artist are you?" so I link my insta and sheepishly go "I don't post very regularly..."
