I wish people were more aware about what deism is bc everytime i tell someone i am a deist they just give me this look as if they are lost....then i have to sit there and explain the difference. And then they dont care at the end after i have taken the time to explain it to them.
Fred Derf How is it bullshit? How is believing in a Supreme Being that created us, but is not intervening with our affairs, bullshit by any stretch of the imagination? Maybe you're just not even close to being intelligent enough to understand it.
Fred Derf Who said I cared about it? I just think it explains how we even exist. Just because you don't know it doesn't mean it's already bullshit. I think the Big Bang happened, but God or Supreme Being is the one that created it all, just saying.
= Agnostic Deist I always knew that, but this video would make it easier for people to understand the differences. I hate being labelled an Atheist, because I believe there might be a higher power, but I do not know for sure. Thus I am an Agnostic Deist, not an Atheist. I think Theist label everyone Atheist that do not believe in God the way they do. This is unfair and shows their lack of education or willingness to distinguish the differences. Has anyone else noticed this?
I think how you define god/God/gods is very important to how you label yourself. A simple practice to help you discover that label maybe to sit and write down the different religions...ask yourself if you believe in the definitions of their gods/God. That should provide a good jump off point.
A deist may or may not believe that God still participates in the progress of the universe. Not all deists believer that God is solely the Prime Mover. The point of deism is that revelation and scripture are not reliable, but God's nature can be at least partially comprehended by reason and observation of Nature.
Great definition. "The point of deism is that revelation and scripture are not reliable, but God's nature can be at least partially comprehended by reason and observation of Nature"
@@JamesGraydon the complexity of the universe and the chances of it sprouting from nothingness, that does tend to make people think that some sort of more intelligent forces behind the creation of the universe although there is no way to prove or disprove this
Not really, consider that like god, the universe could be infinite and there could be an infinite amount of universes. In that case an "accident would always happen, life would always emerge if it possibly could
Deep inside I am a deist too...But I do consider matter to be potentially eternal...my theory is that when the universe stops expanding the universe will contract again and everything will fall into a black hole which will create another big bang and the cycle continues to infinity
And why exactly does this "god" not care about us? If you're a deist you might as well be a theist. The theistic God is much more powerful, knowledgable and loving than the deistic "god".
A deist is someone that does believe in a god(s), not maybe. But does not believe in any of the known religions. Being a deist does not mean you believe the god(s) does not participate in the universe or is unknowable, all those things can go either way. Deism simple means you believe a supernatural intelligent god or gods exists but that you do not know who they are. That is it.
+Josh Boulton yep right. theism believes in a more personal god. and deism just believes that some supernatural god or entity created the universe and doesn't interfere in anyway with our reality. which I find to be more plausible than theism.
Deists are strict monotheists without believing in a Holy Book or a Religious Doctrine. In Turkiye, it is this way. Most reject islamic revelation but are strict monotheists a.k.a deists. I have studied mystical books and stuff as well. There is no magic but metaphorical references to how "Fear is a powerful weapon". Or Kabbalah has various highly accurate predictive analytical algorithms. Training methods to enhance ones speed and strength accurately. And that God gave human beings virtues such as -- Intelligence and Crafting. In today's world, it would be intellectualism and technology. It also states that only spirit can enter Heaven, for the biological body will be painfully destroyed by the beauty of heaven itself.
In short Deism is simply a belief in a creator without religion. It is a type of monotheistic theism without religious beliefs or practices. It’s about being spiritual not religious. However it seems to make more sense than all the other beliefs and religions we have in the world. Also if you think about it if Adam and Eve existed along with the first generation with humans they would of been first deists because they worshipped God without religion.
I am not an agnostic deist or a gnostic deist. Simply deist. Meaning it depends on my day and the events of my day and what I discover or not discover... on that day. The freedom to go back and forth is awesome!! Some days I am curious so I come up with questions about certain things and I go and find the answers. There are also days where I don't even want to think about anything and find ways to relax. What deism also has taught me is reason and morality. Which I like so I CHOOSE to soak in. So much more freedom in it for me.
I was an Agnostic Theist, in the Pentecostal, a branch of Christian Protestant. Now I am an Agnostic Deist after many readings and findings about the supposed holy book.
My 17 year old son went from being baptized last year to turning into an Agnostic Deist. His father is an Gnostic Theist. Whereas myself, I am an Agnostic Atheist. He came to me distraught and sad because his father forces him to go to church every Sunday he visits. I feel so bad for him. I shared this video & started to feel a little better.
Why be a deist? And why exactly does this "god" not care about us? If you're a deist you might as well be a theist. The theistic God is much more powerful, knowledgable and loving than the deistic "god".
I always have been I just did not know the term for it, and I grew up in Baptist Churches LOL so you can imagine how awkward and uncomfortable that was for me, those people think evil spirits are everywhere
Simplest way to explain agnostic deism (I’m an agnostic deist myself): I don’t know if a God does exist or not But if he does, he is an uncaring and indifferent God Any attempts made by man - either religious or philosophical - all fail to comprehend or understand this elusive and/or inactive God All of the definitions summarized: Theist - Believes with absolute certainty that a specific (religious) God exists Atheist - Believes with absolute certainty that no God exists (either religious or philosophical Gods) Deist - Believes with absolute certainty that a (religious or not religious) God does exist but is inactive and can’t be comprehended or described by us Gnostic - Absolute belief in a certain stance (we assume this is the automatically the case if it isn’t explicitly mentioned) Agnostic - Uncertain belief in a certain stance
You forgot Anti-theist: Person who opposes theism but calls himself an "atheist" because they don't want everyone knowing how needlessly intolerant they are :)
Fascinating topic! The concepts were thoroughly explained, and comprehensive. Throughout my life (still in my early 20's) I've gone from Christian, to "sorta Christian" to agnostic deist, to agnostic atheist. Should I expect to become a gnostic atheist next? Lol Who knows. But I think I've finally found my "groove", and I quite agree with Richard Dawkins. Thank you for enlightening me on the proper definitions!
Glad you enjoyed this video Lisa....even though I am not the creator of this video (The actual creator of the video can be found here: ruclips.net/video/Q0T1pIJKji4/видео.html ...I just -re-uploaded it ;). Actually, most Atheists are actually Agnostic and most Theists are Gnostic. So no worries about some final level being Gnostic. lol. I too come from a background as a Christian. Feel free to check out my story of you like: fromchristianitytofreethought.webs.com/my-story
Can relate to your path,I've been "woke" Christian (agnostic theist),then gnostic Christian-patriot extremist, then general agnostic and now im proud agnostic deist liberterian(political liberterian).
I am an agnostic/deist (of a certain sort). When defining deism it says that the "higher power" or god is indifferent to the universe. I don't know any deist that feels this way. There is a difference between non-intervention and indifference. Indifference implies a lack of interest or concern in the design of the universe. This is just stupid. Why would an intelligent agent(s) create a universe that he/she/it doesn't care about?
I believe in God but I don't fall into any organized religion. I follow a holy book but I don't follow the whole aspect of the particular faith. I also feel there is another way of communicating to God other than praying. I kind of go in the middle of theism and deism. What am I?
I believe in a higher power of some form or another, but I don't know if I am sure of my belief in such a higher power. So I am Agnostic Deist. I think Gnostic Atheism is what turned me off from Atheism altogether, but I have more respect for Agnostic Atheists then Atheists who claim to know for sure that gods don't exist, great video it was very enlightening, It helped clarify my position as a Deist, and Agnostic. So thanks. Amadeus!
(As stated under the video though, I am NOT the creator of this video. The original creator of this video can be found here: ruclips.net/video/Q0T1pIJKji4/видео.html ....but nonetheless, I am glad to hear you enjoyed the video. I, like you, share the dis-taste for Gnostic / Militant Atheism. As a result I tend to avoid the label Atheism around most people because of the stigma that tends to go along with. But in all honesty, I would consider myself an Agnostic Atheist...although I am open to the possibility of a Higher Power. :)
I guess as an agnostic deist, i sort of think of the universe itself as a force, willed by the void beyond it. Like an endless loop, it could bring a new universe from the death of the prior universe. Big Bounce theory is wild in concept, but boy does it fire off dopamine like crazy.
I've gone from being raised Christian to agnostic to atheist to agnostic atheist, to gnostic deist to gnostic theist. Its been a long journey, however, my knowledge is based on logic, reason and evidence. Im trying to find the truth of Jesus, and all I know is that finding historical evidence that reasonably supports the cross has given me so much inner peace and even seems to have changed a reaction that I have long believed is just human nature that I have no power over. Peace, love and harmony.
😂So I'm a deist and didnt even know it. People in my circle are too but we never put a label on it. Its just like yeah we believe theres a god and thats it. I think alot of people believe this but dont know theres a label for it. Learnt alot from this video, thanks
The words isn't very popular I think If you ask a random dude in the street he most likely to know athiest, agnostic then theist as these 3 are the mainstream beliefs
I have always wanted believe that God exists but something in me always drove me away from it I guess. I haven't heard of deism before and now that I know what it is I believe that is the path I want to take. And I actually feel comfortable saying that. Thank you for posting this.
Any guess as to where i am? I strongly believe there is higher power that has interacted in my life, but I have recently given up my belief in the Christian God.
+Billof Rights P.S. Although I am not the creator of this video, I am the one that uploaded it. "Bea Truth Seeker" is the alias name I created when I first de-converted 5 years ago. ;)
Sorry, I thought I had responded to your question earlier too. Looks like I must have accidentally deleted my other comment. lol... That being said, I have had some wonderful experiences too as a former born-again Christian. And although I tend to be more of an Agnostic Atheist now, I still remain open to the wonder and awe of there being something more out there. I just dont chop it up to necessarily being a "god."...but I completely understand those who choose to do so based on such experiences. Anyways, feel free to check out my Q&A page to the web site I created after my de-conversion on this topic: fromchristianitytofreethought.webs.com/q-a
Great job! This video is really thorough. I have always been an agnostic deist and was able to finally put a label on it about 12 years ago. I really enjoy Voltaire, Thomas Paine, and David Hume. Christopher Hitchens is also a favorite. Hitch had said from time to time that he couldn’t say with certainty that god in a deist sense doesn’t exist. I guess he knows now.
What am I? I believe that no one fully knows anything, but anything is possible. For all we know, Santa Claus, fairies, magic, superhuman abilities, alternate dimensions, souls, etc could be real, but at the same time, everything might only be what we see. Though I'm leaning towards the magical stuff, because I'd like for it to exist. I like to create theories such as: My school is not a school of the arts, but a school that trains kids with superhuman abilities, I have a speedster/genetically modified human in my class and a master of time and space, Every work of fiction has a dimension where the story actually happens, my mom and brother are secret agents and I'll become one soon, etc. Though I think no one knows these things, I partially believe in my theories and believe in supposedly non-existing magical things, even though they have no proof and most likely don't exist, and I know its weird and I wouldn't tell anyone else. For some reason I really feel that fairies, magic, superhuman abilities, alternate dimensions, souls, astral projection, and other things along those lines are more likely to exist than not exist, because the world may be WAY more than what we perceive with our senses on an everyday bases.
Nope. Not really, dude. Because theists aren't really a monolithic group that you wanna believe. The only religions that tend to be irrational are usually the abrahamic religions such as "christianity", and "islam". But there are plenty of "non-religious theists" who are just as capable of being rational. 🙂
There are many misconceptions about deism that I would like to clear up. Deists believe that revelation and scripture is unreliable and that God or a higher power gave us logic and reason. We are free to believe in anything that our logic and reason takes us to. For example, some of us believe that God never intervenes in our lives while others believe that he does intervene in our lives. Likewise, some believe in an afterlife while others do not. I am a Gnostic Deist who believes that God intervenes in our lives sometimes through miracles as well as in an afterlife.
🤔umm...dude. That's not really a unique trait for deists, because you already have plenty of theists who are not subscribed to any particular religion, either.
WHAT ABOUT ME ? - I believe in higher power ( many form of higher power and entities ) and there also might be god or gods ( not one god ) - BUT i hardly believe that higher power CONNECTED to our life - I believe our anchestor or other entities that also believe other higher entities after them (might be god or gods) that answer our prayer ( but not directly god of gods that answer our prayer , cause their to far away and have no direct connection to us) - I dont believe Heaven or hell directly after human death - but I believe There might be heaven or hell but after serveral time our soul regeneration in several dimension , for me its still a mystery and so far , even from our next dimension its still far away - i believe after human death , we restarted our life in new dimension and new life form , but with several abilities , you can access your past dimension :) - I still not sure who place us in our next dimension , its still mystery for me - I believe our ancestor or another dimension entities that answer our prayer - i dont believe religion my belief come from my own experience, experiment , astral journey and exploration with my own team :) so between deist and theist ?? Agnostic and Gnostic ?? :0
Justme Brilliant, I'm an agnostic atheist - same as my one true hero - St Richard ! Seriously though, this is an excellent dissection of belief and just what is believed. Mucho cudos to Bea TruthSeeker.
Apatheism: I believe that at some point something happened and somehow something and/or someone was created and somehow I, and a bunch of other people, and a lot of other species got here. I can live with that.
I'm an agnostic theist I guess. I'm pretty sure God exists but not 100% sure. I still keep looking for the truth although I think it's almost impossible to find it.
It sounds to me like Gnostic theists are the ones who are extremely, perhaps uniformly religious and conservative in their views, whereas agnostic theists are “mostly” religious and more liberal. Atheists and Deists seem to be the most thoughtful of all though, regardless if they’re gnostic or agnostic.
🌄 *After I have prayed alot for temporal comforts and even the basic necessities of my life and happiness (as well as for others) to no avail. Gd is silent and does no miracle on my behalf🤷🏽♂️ ... I then painfully realized that Gd (who is omnipotent and all-present) MUST BE deliberately allowing these evil things, events, and sufferings to reign in my life FOR A REASON. I must ask, am I living in a hell, being punished, or am I being truly being tested ??? Another thing, am I thankful to Gd that I have a body, a life?*
1. Can we (ever) prove that God exists. Answer : No Therefore the question of the existence of God become useless. Atheits are just another form of fanatics as the believers. Agnosticicism is to be moderate.
Wow thank you very much for this video. Agnostic Deist I would say I believe in free will and everyday you have two choices. You are the magnetic field that decides what to attract and what not to attract. Good or Evil, whatever that means.
Hmm..... so wait. I believe there may/may not be a god, I no longer go to church, I believe in science and the real world, I don't read the Bible anymore, I don't worship a higher power everytime I wake up, I love fictional work, and etc. So...... I'm a Deist?
If you believe there IS a Higher power than you could just call yourself a Deist yes. If you tend to lean towards there being a higher power, but are not really convinced if there really is one, then you would be more of an Agnostic Deist. (As stated under the video though, I am NOT the creator of this video. The original creator of this video can be found here: ruclips.net/video/Q0T1pIJKji4/видео.html if you would like their advice.) Sounds to me though like you are an x-Christian...like I am. If so, feel free to check out my journey from faith to freethought here: fromchristianitytofreethought.webs.com/
wow, looks like we have some stuff in common. I just de-converted from being a Christian ("born-again" Christian in particular) in 2011. I only "came out" in Jan. 2014 after my mom passed on. I didnt have the heart to break it to her. :( It can be a difficult transition for sure! ...I actually created a web site to help with my "coming out" transition. Feel free to check out if you like. You might find some things helpful: fromchristianitytofreethought.webs.com/
My thoughts on prayer (as a former christian turned Theist) is that pray is a way of putting something out there to attact what you want. I believe in Positive and Negative as beings. For a christian Positive would be angels/God and Negative would be Demons/Satan. What you put out is what you will attact. So if you pray you are putting something out, you a sending out a calling and most people when they it is to ask for something positive, like a good job, prosperity, healing...so they are asking Positive to be attracked to them. You put out positive and you will attract Positive. Same way having a negative (christians may call it sinful) life will destroy you. I just disagree with what some christians consider negative/sinful.
I believe I’m an Agnostic Deist. I believe that there is a god or something with extreme power up there. I also believe that he does care about humans and does listen to our prayers. I just think that it’s against his powers to act on them. He can’t make people do bad things, that’s our actions not his nor does he stop them because it’s nature. I believe that he does speak to us through actually occurrences in our lives. He gives us little signs but he doesn’t present his actually self. (Hope that makes sense)
Thanks for the video. It is very interesting and (for me) quiet helpfull, since I heard of deism the first time. And I know now, that I'm an agnostic deist.
Looking at life itself and how complex it is and at the universe how it functions convinces me that there is or was a powerful designer or designers, however looking at the suffering in this world, murder, hate, rape, hunger, deseases, wars and how people pray for their loved ones and yet they still die, it makes me think that maybe god or that designer was just a designer hes gone and wont come back/ or he may be powerless to controll his/her creation, so i feel i like deism
From this I can say I am an Agnostic Deist: I believe there is a higher power that created the universe. But I also believe that he is limited, he can only communicate with us maybe through deaths or Commas or near death experience. Just like a human in the beach, this higher power is so big and powerful, that grains of sand are like planets and stars and we are just germs or microorganisms living in one grain of sand. He is powerful but limited or just doesn't give that much attention to the world
If you believe in a god, but don’t know for sure, and also believe in divine intervention, you are an agnostic theist. Furthermore, if this is correct but you do not believe in any of the organized religions, sounds to me like you should start your own religion. A deist does NOT believe in devine intervention.
@@CreatureFeature666 I have been looking into the history of it and there are many branches of deism. There were, for example Christian deists who were Christian but didn't believe the bible was inerrant. Some few did believe in intervention though. The main characteristics of Deism are a belief in God, a rejection of religion and an epistemological attachment to reason over empiricism. Don't really know what else to call it when you defiantly believe in God, definitely believe in reason, definitely believe in divine intervention but do not believe in the claims of any religion. Not gonna lie though, I might start my own religion. You want in?
@@adenjones1802 yes I am aware of Christian Deists. Some of America’s founders for instance. I am an agnostic deist. I personally believe in more than one higher power. If I added a belief in god(s) aiding or interfering in our lives, I don’t believe I would consider myself a deist any longer. That’s just where I’m at right now. I’m still learning though. Sounds like you are on the path of enlightenment and I think that is really cool. One great thing about deism is the conversation and being able to walk outside the narrow path. The fear and guilt laid down by some religions are strictly about money and power. I turned 60 this year, but I’m always trying to learn more. You made a great comment when you said, “reason over empiricism.” Funny, it’s something I’ve been think a lot about lately as I see society moving backwards in some ways. Postmodernism started creeping in during the later part of the 20th century. I think the younger mainstream crowd is infected with it and that is the reason some things are headed south so to speak. I’m an old thrash metal guitarist and in no way I consider myself a prude or anything of the sort, but I just can’t think that way. Thank you so much for the reply! If ya hit me back, I will read every word with the utmost respect. Rock on, Aden!
@@CreatureFeature666 Yeah the definition of deism and agnosticism can get a bit mixed from time to time. The strict definitions of the terms can be different from how people identify from day to day. It all sort of depends on how the idea was first exposed to you. When I first heard about deism, they basically told me it was believing in God without religion. Or at the very least believing in God based on rationality and not the bible. A more accurate description of my beliefs are that I am a Pantheist. My reasons for believing in God are as follows. (its a bit long but if you have the time.) We first have to define God. God is Omnipresent, Omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent. Omnipresent= existing in all three dimensional space in the universe at the same time Omnipotent= Containing all the power within the universe at the same time. (this is different from saying, can do literally anything conceivable.) Omniscient= Possessing all knowledge within the universe. Omnibenevolent= existing in the highest state of morality possible. The first step is to see if there exists anything that fits any of these definitions that may suggest the existence of God. As it turns out there is something. Energy. Everything in the universe is made of energy, therefore energy exists in all places at once, therefore, energy is omnipresent. Energy has and IS all of the power in the universe, therefore energy is omnipotent. Omniscient is a tricky one at first. Energy would have to be conscious before it is omniscient. At a first glance, energy is not conscious. But at a second glance you realise that if everything is made of energy that means all conscious things are made of energy. Which means energy does often come together in a certain way so that it is conscious of itself. You for example, are made of energy and are conscious. Therefore, because you are a physical part of the universe, the universe is conscious to some degree. Everything I have said so far is rationally and scientifically verifiable fact. This next part gets a little speculative and relies on deductive inference. If a tiny bit of energy that exists in you can become as conscious as it is, what about the entirety of the universe. Is it rational to believe the entirety of the universe is conscious and that if it is, then it must be hyper conscious. I believe that is a rational assumption. Therefore if this is all correct then God can be asserted as omniscient. As for omnibenevolent, we face the problem of evil. That is to say any evil thing that cannot be attributed to free will for example. Why is it that evil exists? To explain this. try to think of the following thought experiment, Imagine a universe where there is the direction up but not down. You can't can you. It doesn't make sense. Up only has any meaning in relation to its opposite direction. What about light and dark. Its not really impossible for the universe to be made entirely of photons but that is not what light is. Light is the subjective experience of one of those photons bouncing around in our retinas. In order for that to occur, there needs to be a space in the universe that is occupied by the subject perceiving light and therefore a space where light is not present. therefore you cannot have an experience of light without dark. This same principle applied to good and evil suggests that the concept of good cannot exist without the possibility of evil existing. This is how evil can coexist in a universe that has God. This is basically my reasoning for believing in God. Its long I know. Thanks for taking the time to read it if you did. Also, Its awesome your into metal. Are you a Sabaton fan by any chance?
@@adenjones1802 not too long at all. I really enjoyed reading and you did a fantastic job breaking it down. Yes, energy and balance. Thanks for taking the time. It gave me some things to think about. Speaking of balance, have you ever read The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran? Yeah Sabaton is cool. Not a band I listen to a lot, but I do like them. I was trying to put a link to my newest song in case you wanted to check it out, but this channel keeps deleting my comment. I’ll switch over to my music channel and try to reply in a minute.
There is _but one_ claim that the position of atheism regards. And that is the 'theistic' claim that "God(s) exists." Like all claims to truth, this claim breaks down on three dichotomous axes: *_truth_* of the claim; *_acknowledgement_* of the claim; and *_sufficiency of knowledge_* as to the claim. The first dichotomous axis addresses the truth _position._ Like any claim to truth, the 'theistic' claim is either true or _not_ true (false). There is no middle ground. The second dichotomous axis addresses the acknowledgement _position._ The recipient evaluating the claim either acknowledges the claim as true (theism), or does _not_ acknowledge the claim as true (atheism). Again, there is no middle ground. The third dichotomous axis addresses the _sufficiency of knowledge_ as to the claim _position._ Either the recipient evaluating the claim has sufficient knowledge or information as to the truth of the claim (gnostism), or does _not_ have sufficient knowledge or information concerning the claim (agnosticism). The default 'acknowledgement' position on the claim that "god(s) exists" is _atheism_ for this is the position the recipient begins with _prior_ to hearing the claim for the first time. It would be impractical to acknowledge the truth of a claim _before_ hearing it for the first time. The default position addressing 'sufficiency of knowledge or information' is _agnosticism_ for this is the position the recipient begins with _prior_ to hearing the claim. One can not claim to have sufficient knowledge or information concerning a given claim _until_ he or she hears the claim for the first time. This presents four populations of recipients evaluating the claim that "god(s) exists." The 'gnostic theist' claims to have sufficient knowledge or information to justify changing their position from atheism (default) to theism by acknowledging the claim. Often this population claims to acquire "sufficient knowledge" from revelation from or personal relationship with the deity mentioned in the claim. The 'gnostic atheist' claims to have sufficient knowledge or information to justify remaining in the position of atheism (default) by _rejecting to acknowledge_ the claim. This population is sometimes referred to as 'strong atheists'. This population may or may not make the additional claim "god(s) don't exist." If so, like the theists in the original claim, those that make such a claim now encumber a burden of proof to substantiate such claim with evidence. The 'agnostic theist' claims to _not_ have sufficient knowledge or information to justify changing their position from atheism (default) by does so _anyways_ by acknowledging the truth of the claim _through_ 'faith'. And last, the 'agnostic atheist' claims to _not_ have sufficient knowledge or information to justify changing their initial position of atheism so they _continue to suspend acknowleging the truth of the claim until sufficent evidence is presented._ Of the four populations, only the 'gnostic theists' and the 'agnostic atheists' are *_justified_* in their final positions. The former is justified in changing their position to theism by 'revelation'. The latter is justified in suspending such acknowledgement until sufficient credible evidence is introduced, and therefore remain atheist. This is how I can demonstrate that I am indeed an atheist - an agnostic atheist.
Being unconvinced is as much disbelief as it is partial belief. Belief is not something you binary either has or don't have as you illustrate well. So since there is so many degrees of beliefs you can just as well say that point 2. is partial belief as you can say it is partial non-belief. So to apply the term atheism to point 2 makes no sense. Since the definition of atheism is "not to believe in God" or "rejecting belief in God". In other words being unconvinced is not actually atheism at all, it is a manipulated new speak way for atheism to try to get a majority which they have never had in a world where 80% of people believe in God. But it doesn't work. It is manipulative and false, and as you say "confusing" which defeats the purpose of language which is to clarify. So position 2 is NOT atheism. Maybe you can say it is not theism either, but then we need a third term to clarify confusion it makes no sense to have the same word for positions which are so clearly distinctly different from each other.
I'm an agnostic monotheist! Really awesome video by the way! Though you forgot to mention Ignosticism, Henotheism, Omnism, Apatheism, Monotheism, Panentheism, Pantheism, Polytheism, Pandeisme and Transtheism. Of course some of them are sub categories and it would maybe be confusing mentioning them all. But It would be even more awesome to have a general view of them all.
I am mainly in the belief of Agnostic Atheism. I sometimes think of what if's in an Agnostic Deist mindset, but abroad what if that leads me back to my Atheism.
I would say that I’m an agnostic theist. My beliefs are much closer to an atheist’s than someone who goes to church, yet prayer is an important part of my life. I cannot explain that to someone else or force that practice onto them. It’s mine and mine alone. God is too big for our mortal brains to conceptualize, so if we want to have a relationship with God, we have to make it into a story that we can understand. And if the story lifts us up closer to God, then great! But when that story starts to crush us, or when we use that story to crush someone else’s story, then the stories are no good and must be revealed for what they are: mere idols.
Nonsense. First, you can be a theist and not believe that God is knowable ie Sikhism. Second, you can be a deist and hold to a religion. There are deist Taoists and deist Buddhists.
secondly atheism is not the default position.. based on truth claims...if theists are making a positive claim.. atheism is then the opposite.. negative claim... both have the burden of proof.
Very nice, but I'd have liked more on non-religious theism, where religious means being tied to a group's rules (like ligature) but I mot certainly an not!
"Einstein was a Deist" ? I always thought that he was an Agnostic Pantheist " Einstein used many labels to describe his religious views, including "agnostic", "religious nonbeliever" and a "pantheistic" believer in "Spinoza's God." " en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_views_of_Albert_Einstein
Fred Derf Wow you're so hellbent on being right aren't you? All right then, carry on.
Fred Derf What'd I say that was wrong? Are you the authority of what's right?

= Agnostic Deist
I always knew that, but this video would make it easier for people to understand the differences.
I agreed
You're an atheist that's curious and wonders if a God exists.
That's absolutely true I agree 100%, you just said everything I was about to say.
I think how you define god/God/gods is very important to how you label yourself. A simple practice to help you discover that label maybe to sit and write down the different religions...ask yourself if you believe in the definitions of their gods/God. That should provide a good jump off point.
True
Deists don't necessarily believe that God doesn't interact with the universe. Some deists believe that God subtlety interacts with our world.
A deist may or may not believe that God still participates in the progress of the universe. Not all deists believer that God is solely the Prime Mover. The point of deism is that revelation and scripture are not reliable, but God's nature can be at least partially comprehended by reason and observation of Nature.
@Matthew Tenorio_3200654 - No agnostic suspends judgement. Deism is rational belief.
@Matthew Tenorio_3200654 *Share with us. In what way is deism not rational?*
Great definition. "The point of deism is that revelation and scripture are not reliable, but God's nature can be at least partially comprehended by reason and observation of Nature"
@@JamesGraydon the complexity of the universe and the chances of it sprouting from nothingness, that does tend to make people think that some sort of more intelligent forces behind the creation of the universe although there is no way to prove or disprove this
I will put my money on what Jesus said:
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”
Matthew 24:35 NIV
deism is the most logical position to me because I find it impossible for nothing to come from something when God can be infinite.
its more logical than "we formed by accident"
Not really, consider that like god, the universe could be infinite and there could be an infinite amount of universes. In that case an "accident would always happen, life would always emerge if it possibly could
Deep inside I am a deist too...But I do consider matter to be potentially eternal...my theory is that when the universe stops expanding the universe will contract again and everything will fall into a black hole which will create another big bang and the cycle continues to infinity
Yolson cool theory brother
And why exactly does this "god" not care about us? If you're a deist you might as well be a theist. The theistic God is much more powerful, knowledgable and loving than the deistic "god".
I'm Agnostic Deist
Thank you for this video you have clarified the misconceptions
Atheists say God is an extraordinary claim, and its unobserved and unproven.... So are Multiverses and a universe from "Nothing"
Hate the haters Thought I was Agnostic Theist until this video explained what Deism is.
@@5tonyvvvv - Nothing says an Atheist has to believe in anything else.
I'm an agnostic deist too, before watching this video I thought I was an agnostic theist
Same!
Thanks for the definition of deism
Deist God is an absentee creator.
I'm an agnostic deist.
Any deists out there?
Switching from atheism to deism.
Agnostic deism is the most logical position to hold
I'm a deist in the sense that I think that each religion points to the same eternal consciousness (what most people call "god") in a different way.
Welcome to a far more rational position and thank you for tour intellectual honesty also said that i am atheist

Simplest way to explain agnostic deism (I’m an agnostic deist myself):
I don’t know if a God does exist or not
But if he does, he is an uncaring and indifferent God
Any attempts made by man - either religious or philosophical - all fail to comprehend or understand this elusive and/or inactive God
All of the definitions summarized:
Theist - Believes with absolute certainty that a specific (religious) God exists
Atheist - Believes with absolute certainty that no God exists (either religious or philosophical Gods)
Deist - Believes with absolute certainty that a (religious or not religious) God does exist but is inactive and can’t be comprehended or described by us
Gnostic - Absolute belief in a certain stance (we assume this is the automatically the case if it isn’t explicitly mentioned)
Agnostic - Uncertain belief in a certain stance
You forgot Anti-theist: Person who opposes theism but calls himself an "atheist" because they don't want everyone knowing how needlessly intolerant they are :)
What about anti-theists that believe in a god?
I become deist recently
Great. I am a deist for 2 years.
I became a deist ver recently after being a Christian. I know I'm a year late, but do both of you still identify as deists?
Fascinating topic! The concepts were thoroughly explained, and comprehensive.
Throughout my life (still in my early 20's) I've gone from Christian, to "sorta Christian" to agnostic deist, to agnostic atheist. Should I expect to become a gnostic atheist next? Lol Who knows. But I think I've finally found my "groove", and I quite agree with Richard Dawkins.
Thank you for enlightening me on the proper definitions!

I am confused between Agnostic Theism and agnostic Deism.
Please help, I want to know my identity.
i am a deist
The biggest problem with organized religion is that nobody is allowed to think for themselves, which in itself contradicts the Adam and Eve story.
That all comes to the idea that we don't know or even can't comprehend as humans what this "higher power's" motives are.
Agreed
I would argue, god created the universe for fun, but thats just my personal belief, that this higher power just wanted to see what happens.
Maybe because this deity lacks human characteristics? Ever hear of an “impersonal” God?
So thanks. Amadeus!

I became deism, without knowing about it from others at all.
I am Agnostic Theist.Such a great explanation of all of these definitions.

Deism makes sense. Deism is pure, rational, logical, scientific and lovely belief.
It really doesn't it's confusing because how can you believe that God exist or a higher power but doesn't interact with our universe or the world?
I’m an Agnostic atheist. Thank you for this video! Very succinct & educational.
Santa has a history we know saint nick was a real man so not sure why add him in your list
Being a deist seems more logical than a theist to me

The definition of agnostic thesis is completely different on the internet than here. For example, Wikipedia

Zeus is not a Roman god. It's a Greek god. Also, it should be A x B
From this I can say I am an Agnostic Deist:
I believe there is a higher power that created the universe. But I also believe that he is limited, he can only communicate with us maybe through deaths or Commas or near death experience. Just like a human in the beach, this higher power is so big and powerful, that grains of sand are like planets and stars and we are just germs or microorganisms living in one grain of sand.
He is powerful but limited or just doesn't give that much attention to the world
I think that if there is a god it only created the universe and perhaps manipulates things but has no interference beyond that.
Do you have a version of this without the background music? It seems pretty good other than that
I liked that clip of Hitch Bitch at the end! :D Plus, this vid was (although repetitive) quite clarifying. Thanks.
I am a deist but I believe that God participates in our existance.
(its a bit long but if you have the time.)
We first have to define God.
God is Omnipresent, Omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent.
Omnipresent= existing in all three dimensional space in the universe at the same time
Omnipotent= Containing all the power within the universe at the same time. (this is different from saying, can do literally anything conceivable.)
Omniscient= Possessing all knowledge within the universe.
And that is the 'theistic' claim that "God(s) exists."
Like all claims to truth, this claim breaks down on three dichotomous axes: *_truth_* of the claim; *_acknowledgement_* of the claim; and *_sufficiency of knowledge_* as to the claim.
This presents four populations of recipients evaluating the claim that "god(s) exists."
The 'gnostic theist' claims to have sufficient knowledge or information to justify changing their position from atheism (default) to theism by acknowledging the claim.
And last, the 'agnostic atheist' claims to _not_ have sufficient knowledge or information to justify changing their initial position of atheism so they _continue to suspend acknowleging the truth of the claim until sufficent evidence is presented._
Of the four populations, only the 'gnostic theists' and the 'agnostic atheists' are *_justified_* in their final positions.
Glad you enjoyed it. The original creator of the video can be found here: ruclips.net/video/Q0T1pIJKji4/видео.html )
I am mainly in the belief of Agnostic Atheism. I sometimes think of what if's in an Agnostic Deist mindset, but abroad what if that leads me back to my Atheism.
It's not God if it doesn't know or care about each and every one of the living beings of this universe and all possible universes.
Super helpful, thanks.
Nonsense.
First, you can be a theist and not believe that God is knowable ie Sikhism.
Second, you can be a deist and hold to a religion. There are deist Taoists and deist Buddhists.
No you can't! Those are theist religions not deism you are ignorant
secondly atheism is not the default position.. based on truth claims...if theists are making a positive claim.. atheism is then the opposite.. negative claim... both have the burden of proof.
Thanks for the vid and i agree with your terminology
Very nice, but I'd have liked more on non-religious theism, where religious means being tied to a group's rules (like ligature) but I mot certainly an not!
What about being an adeist?
"Einstein was a Deist" ?
I always thought that he was an Agnostic Pantheist
" Einstein used many labels to describe his religious views, including "agnostic", "religious nonbeliever" and a "pantheistic" believer in "Spinoza's God." "
