Spotted: A Male Sparrowhawk!

A male sparrowhawk paid a visit today which is the second time I’ve seen one here (the other was female!) but the first time one has been caught on the cameras. The sparrows were spared this time! There are only 35,000 breeding pairs of sparrowhawks in this country and are on the amber list for conservation.

Gorgeous video of a very handsome bird. Yes, the downside of bird feeding is when the innocents are caught by the predators. There are many hawks, kestrals and owls where I live in north coastal San Diego county, California--and they've caught a few doves who are at my feeders. I feel bad and think about taking the feeders away when it happens...sigh...

It’s sad but it would happen in nature, hard not to sometimes feel responsible when you’re enticing them but you’re also doing a lot of good and that hopefully outweighs any bad ☺️
