  • I set out to activate a park for Parks on the Air (POTA), using only Morse code. I didn't quite reach the goal. I needed 10 contacts to activate the park. I made the 10, but 9 were CW and 1 was Single Side Band (SSB). Most of the contacts were me hunting other parks, because the 40 meter band was so crowded and shifty.
This video is simply to show what operating outdoors can look and sound like. Not all of the contacts were on video, since I had to use my phone for other things. But I think there is enough footage for entertainment purposes.
The location was Pisgah National Forrest in Western North Carolina. POTA park US-4510. I can't give the exact location, because it is TOO GOOD!!!
    My gear for this activation...
    Recent RS-978 transceiver
X-Tenna 40-10 end fed half wave antenna
    CW Morse US outdoor paddle
    Arborist line and throw weight
Tarp from DD Tarp (great tarp, by the way)

Thanks a bunch. Yeah, I should make it a habit of using the subtitles to be more engaging. Especially for those (like me) who are fairly new to CW.

You done well on your 1st CW activation. I've had the same problems with stations popping up on my frequency due to solar conditions and due to that have had to change frequencies and bands a lot this week.

Thanks Jim! It will get easier for sure. See you on the bands!

Pretty good. Looks like you had an enjoyable time. Warmer weather is around the corner here, temp above 60 degrees. Time for me to set up portable.

I really like operating outdoors. I try to avoid setting up around people. I know that some operators like talking to curious people about radio, but I like to relax and just focus on operating. Thanks for watching!
