CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Travis (Robert De Niro) looks into the mirror, drawing his gun, and practices his intimidation routine for a battle on the streets.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
"All the animals come out at night" -- and one of them is a cabby about to snap. In Martin Scorsese's classic 1970s drama, insomniac ex-Marine Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) works the nightshift, driving his cab throughout decaying mid-'70s New York City, wishing for a "real rain" to wash the "scum" off the neon-lit streets. Chronically alone, Travis cannot connect with anyone, not even with such other cabbies as blowhard Wizard (Peter Boyle). He becomes infatuated with vapid blonde presidential campaign worker Betsy (Cybill Shepherd), who agrees to a date and then spurns Travis when he cluelessly takes her to a porno movie. After an encounter with a malevolent fare (played by Scorsese), the increasingly paranoid Travis begins to condition (and arm) himself for his imagined destiny, a mission that mutates from assassinating Betsy's candidate, Charles Palatine (Leonard Harris), to violently "saving" teen hooker Iris (Jodie Foster) from her pimp, Sport (Harvey Keitel). Travis' bloodbath turns him into a media hero; but has it truly calmed his mind? Written by Paul Schrader, Taxi Driver is an homage to and reworking of cinematic influences, a study of individual psychosis, and an acute diagnosis of the latently violent, media-fixated Vietnam era. Scorsese and Schrader structure Travis' mission to save Iris as a film noir version of John Ford's late Western The Searchers (1956), aligning Travis with a mythology of American heroism while exposing that myth's obsessively violent underpinnings. Yet Travis' military record and assassination attempt, as well as Palatine's political platitudes, also ground Taxi Driver in its historical moment of American in the 1970s. Employing such techniques as Godardian jump cuts and ellipses, expressive camera moves and angles, and garish colors, all punctuated by Bernard Herrmann's eerie final score (finished the day he died), Scorsese presents a Manhattan skewed through Travis' point-of-view, where De Niro's now-famous "You talkin' to me" improv becomes one more sign of Travis' madness. Shot during a New York summer heat wave and garbage strike, Taxi Driver got into trouble with the MPAA for its violence. Scorsese desaturated the color in the final shoot-out and got an R, and Taxi Driver surprised its unenthusiastic studio by becoming a box-office hit. Released in the Bicentennial year, after Vietnam, Watergate, and attention-getting attempts on President Ford's life, Taxi Driver's intense portrait of a man and a society unhinged spoke resonantly to the mid-'70s audience -- too resonantly in the case of attempted Reagan assassin and Foster fan John W. Hinckley. Taxi Driver went on to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, but it lost the Best Picture Oscar to the more comforting Rocky. Anchored by De Niro's disturbing embodiment of "God's lonely man," Taxi Driver remains a striking milestone of both Scorsese's career and 1970s Hollywood.

I still can’t believe that this scene wasn’t even scripted. Martin told Robert to go in the room and see if he could say something to himself in the mirror, and he came up with all that on the spot basically. Truly amazing.
This line was actually stuck in De Niro's head for a few days after seeing a Bruce Springsteen concert where Bruce was interacting with the crowd and at one point asked them "Are you talkin' to me?" ;)

This movie is not prettied or glamourized but real gritty and mean. It is so real how it affects one man viewing garbage, exploitation, politics, and corruption. He lived poor, he was uneducated, and began to fight with violence to save a child from prostitution. This is a very interesting study of a man's sensitivity towards his environment.
Monique LaCosta This also be a perspective on PTSD.

@Lee Sun hun v chai exactly. I find also a sexual parallelism. Like he has something inside him trying to come out but he is unable during the film to take it off. Finally both things, the sexual frustration and the urge to kill culminate in the last scene when he does the mass murder.

The line "You talking to me?" is such an iconic and powerful line because its so real. It is so authentic for an unhinged mad man whose practicing a homicide, to say.
I think this scene is misinterpreted. It seems like people think he's going insane and talking to himself in the mirror. I think more that he's supposed to be rehearsing what he'll say to others and he's trying to develop his new tough guy persona.
exactly, i thought the same.
It seems to me that the point is to show how he is becoming more paranoid and unbalanced.
Yeah he’s developing his new persona because of his obsession with Betsy, and the obsession with Betsy eventually drives him crazy as he tries to kill Palantine.

Well I'm only 16, so it's fair enough.
Z-Rex, when I was your age I knew taxi driver, raging Bull, godfather, etc...am I better than you? No. Does everyone have to like that kind of cinema, instead of marvel movies? No. But if I knew, nowadays is very very easy to at least see every movie ever made, thanks to Internet. And everyone can have an opinion. The bad thing for me is most Kids (not taking of you) dont even want to see, mainly cause the film is decades old...that is nonsense. If a thing is good, it was good 50 years ago and it will be 50 years from now on. For example, most of the music I really enjoy was made before I was born...imagine if I didnt want to ear it cause it was 'old'...
Can't believe Taxi Driver lost the Academy Award to Rocky. Rocky was a great film. But Taxi Driver was better
Chef Love I think it’s just that Rocky appealed to a larger audience, just like action or superhero movies appeal to a large audience nowadays
Rocky embodies the American dream, which wasn't a dead meme at the time
I like both
At least Taxi Driver won the Golden Palm in Cannes
Rocky was the "safer" option. The academy rarely chooses films that go beyond
What I love about this scene is that Travis is literally looking at himself in the mirror, with all his weapons strapped on, and he doesn't see a villain or madman at all, but he sees instead a hero. The irony is that despite the fact that he is staring directly into the mirror, inviting him to do some inward reflection and gain some awareness of himself, he sees instead the silhouette of a hero in the making, an ideal taken outside of his own inner life (from a western or war movie, perhaps). Looking into the mirror ironically alienates him even more from access to his own subconscious inner world.
One of the most iconic scenes in cinema history.

Yes
+Ates Goksu during rehearsal, De Niro improvised parts of this scene which captured the character perfectly and was used during filming,
de niro tough guy!
I watched this on TCM last night and De Niro had said he took inspiration for the lines "You talkin to me?" By none other than Bruce Springsting. I guess at a concert, Springsting would rally up the crowd and then ask "You talkin to me?" back to the crowd. Amazing.
They were all standing around and de niro started talking to himself so they decided to film it and added it into the movie. A lot of older movies in some parts are improvised or added. Lool at full metal jacket the whole intro with r lee ermey is all improvised
Young Robert de Niro is unconventionally cute. I mean, he's not one of those typical dream-boys like young Travolta or modern day Zacc Effron. There's something peculiar about him, something different. He looks mature but still vulnerable.
People looked older back then because of unheathy lifestyle.

I think Travis Bickle is symbolically fighting his "other" self. The first part involved him trying in vain to establish some connection. When he was rejected, the "other" side of him showed up because Travis thought he was destined to be lonely forever and would never be able to be "normal". At the end of this clip, you see his reflection("other" side) say "You're dead". It means the old Travis is no longer here, and the new Travis has replaced him, which led to the murderous rampage.
So lonely, so alienated...
I didn't see it like that. I always thought this scene represents his hypocrisy. He wants to clean the scumbags off the streets even though he's slowly becoming one of them hence "Youre talking to me? I'm the only one here."

This single scene is better than many movies
One of the most memorable scenes in the history of cinema and your comment is that he is "hot?" You're kidding me, right? One of the greatest acting performances of our time and your comment is that he is "hot" or was "hot." You people bring superficiality to another level.
21st century shitheads for you. What else do you expect?
People are just noticing his attractiveness but ok, act like you're better than most
James W you’re right
are you gonna cry about it
you're so whiny . you're not any better than them lol

xxladybug94 She was 30 years old. Now she´s 70 years, but a mature Sr. with a some charming
samsonpker Sorry, wrong of language. Error, I wanted to say "He". I´m refer to Robert de Niro, he was hot at 30 - 40 years old, but now, like old mature man with 70, he continues with a some charming, old man charming!
xxladybug94 too bad he was only in 2 movies when he looked like in his 20s
RX7821979 He was 32 years old in Taxi Driver
Liberal 85 He said "looked" not "was"
this is literally how my dad behaves
😂
Am i talkin to me
schizophrenic De Niro
We all talk to ourselves
This clip alone contains possibly the greatest piece of acting ever .
0:55 - 01:09 Robert De Niro being iconic for about 5 seconds!
Your math is a bit off but agreed nevertheless! 😅
One of my favorite movies. One of the best movies ever made. One of the most iconic scenes ever. One of the most iconic lines ever.
Happy birthday to one of my all time favorite actors.
Who the fuck is your fav actor of all time then ?
Gregory Peck. De Niro is close though.
Strange.
aman gajraj However, De Niro's performance in Taxi Driver is my favorite acting performance of any actor, which is saying a lot. And Taxi Driver is what I usually say when somebody asks what my favorite movie is.
Same, My favorite movie of all time.
DeNiro is the best actor of all time. Not just because of his range and performances, but because he was part of the greatest movie eras from the 70's, the 80's, and the 90's. Maybe credit is due to Scorsese, but all-in-all no actor has demonstrated the versatility he has throughout multiple genres that gave us iconic films.
One of the most iconic scenes in cinema!
Masterpieces from Martin Scorsese
